Tegu 42-piece Block Set

Now, I’m no expert on kids, but I do know blocks are a mighty fine toy to have on hand when little ones are around. Wooden blocks are the best, of course, and if you add in magnets, well, then you’re set for time-consuming activities until they’re teenagers. Right?

Tegu Blocks have magnets embedded within their surfaces to make building easy and enjoyable. Each piece is built around a 30mm unit (that’s around 1″), so all blocks are compatible with the next. Start out with small kit or go big with the large 42-piece Set shown above, and have fun building cars and all sorts of architectural wonders with your kids, nieces, and/or nephews.

Petal Cup and Tray

While you’re sweeping up whatever debris that hides around your desk, you might as well assess whether you need some serious organizers like this Petal Cup and Tray from Dino Sanchez. They’re made of powder coated steel, so they’ll last a very long time, and are available in three colors: avocado green, powder blue, and cream. So, now, go on and get to it: organize, corral, and conquer that disorganized stack of stuff!

Dustpan and Brush, Ole Jensen

It’s not often that we actually admire the shape of a dustpan. Ole Jensen was inspired to create this particular set when cleaning his studio with a folded newspaper in one hand and a broom in the other. This version has a dustpan made of a thin, flat sheet of polypropylene with a natural bristle brush and beechwood handle. Simply slip the brush handle through the grommet to hang the set after you sweep up.

Swoop Storage Bag

Sadly, the retailer (spoonsisters.com) we originally linked to when we posted this Swoop Storage Bag back in 2011 has closed its virtual doors. Not to worry, we found another place that carries it, with other colors and sizes, no less.

With the thirtysomethings now having kids en masse, the complaint of toys taking over an entire home is more often heard than not. How in the world to curb this crazy emesis of plastic mess? Perhaps this storage bag/play mat could help. You simply ‘swoop’ up everything into the bag by pulling the nylon cords and store it away. Also, if you’re thinking you need a larger version, it should be noted that the Knapsack by Fatboy could work. Just be careful to remove the kids before tying it up.

Kiel Mead Brass Coasters

Kiel Mead has the right idea of making the “mundane more precious.” If you’re not afraid to go bold with brass coasters, then these four hand-sanded graphic coasters might be a subtle upgrade to whatever you’re currently resting your cold drink upon (if you don’t have coasters, then you either better not have nice furniture and/or be under the age of 30.)

Alfredo Carafe

The stopper on this carafe looks like it could double as a spinning top, though I suppose you would want to be rather careful about suggesting that to (childish) guests, as you’d not want it lost or damaged. That said, it’d be a lovely serving vessel for lemonade or juice for these last few days of summer.

Moak Clock

Who wants a cute yet sturdy concrete clock? Designed by the Netherlands-based Studio PS, the Moak Clock has its base and hands made of concrete. The minute hand has just a touch of bright orange on its tip to set it apart from the hour. An oak dial finishes off the material mix.

Picnic Corkscrew by Menu

Seletti Atomizers

Certain scents for the home and table are gaining popularity, and, as you might be aware, there’s all sorts of options to add and mix fragrances to enhance a dining (or shopping) experience. Now, you might not like the idea of adding scents to your already excellent culinary experience at home, but these Atomizers by Seletti are done beautifully in mouth blown glass, and could just as easily be admired as art forms as they are containers. As Seletti says, “the forms, unexpected on the table, outline a new gestural expressiveness towards food.” They could just as easily hold a favorite personal fragrance as well, which might be a more likely use for most of us.

Set Edition’s Chipboard Postcards

A handwritten note is hard to beat, no matter how gifted you are at typing out a heartfelt message. I could go on and on to try and convince you to pick up a pen, but Set Edition’s Chipboard Postcards will most likely do the job for me, as their simple graphics won’t get in the way of your impressive (good or bad) handwriting.

CMYK Up Lamp

What the what is going on with this CMYK Up Lamp? Dennis Parren has combined red, yellow, and blue LED bulbs to create an interesting mix of light. When the three primary colors are combined, you’ll see a white light. However, when one of these color bulbs is blocked by the structural form of the lamp itself, then the other two combine to produce tertiary shadows (cyan, magenta, and yellowish colors). Pretty spectacular, isn’t it?

Slide Mirror

Sad news: it looks like there’s not a retailer stateside that carries these mirrors anymore. Happy news: you can buy them directly from the designer, Sylvain Willenz.

If you buy either of these mirrors, you might just have to get the Cuboid Doormat to continue the 3D illusion. Maybe add the Half a Table by Niels Van Eijk & Miriam Van der Lubbe and some seating from Acne for a distinct fun-house vibe.

Wörther Wood Mechanical Pencil

I’ve held my share of mechanical pencils, and there’s something entirely comfortable about the hexagonal, thick barrel of the Wörther Wood Mechanical Pencil. That ergonomic shape starts to become very important when you’re sketching or writing for longer periods of time, as you might know if you’re in any creative field. Plus, the fact the 3 mm thick graphite lead doesn’t need sharpening means that it’s an excellent tool for anyone who relies on a pencil for getting their ideas down on paper (or wood, metal, paper, or plastic, as the lead will work on almost every material).

Mirobolite Lamp

Let’s start the day off with a semi-expensive floor lamp. The Mirobolite has obvious influences from an ordinary task lamp, yet with its multiple joints and color options it becomes slightly extraordinary. ‘Slightly’ because the black and raw version don’t entirely blow your socks off, however, if you’re a little more daring in your color scheme, you might prefer the multicolor, which doesn’t hold back with its palette one bit.
