Platinum Scratch World Map

The Scratch Map has been around for a while (2011 was our first glimpse), but did you know there’s a Platinum version that might be a little easier to fit into your home’s color scheme? You know how it works- you simply scratch off the top layer to reveal the colorful map below. It’s a fun way to keep track of the different places you’ve been to around the world, or to plan out the places you’d like to go.

Design Letters Message Board

Who doesn’t love a message board? Sure, it’s for important updates, but it’s also prime territory for a funny joke or a heartfelt message. I’ve always been attracted to the utility of the black letter boards found in churches and civic centers, but this perforated board from Design Letters does the same job in a prettier outfit. Pin lists and reminders to its surface and use the letters and numbers to spell out favorite phrases.

Clouds

There’s nothing wrong with having your head in the clouds every now and then, or so says Most Modest and Aces of Space. Their collaboration to create a “port hole to the sky” resulted in ‘Clouds’- a captured fragment from Jacob van Ruisdael’s “A Panoramic View of Amsterdam looking towards the IJ”, which was originally painted around 1665-70. Having a portion of a 17th century Dutch landscape hung in your home is pretty fun when it’s done in this particular way, isn’t it? And, of course, it costs a lot less than buying the original.

Clouds Poster by Debbie Carlos

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s hard to find an interesting piece of art under $50. This Clouds Poster by Debbie Carlos is pretty much just what it looks like: an image of clouds printed on a plotter, which is a large format printer primarily used to produce architectural and engineering prints. The rougher image is made of a series of dots, just like images from newspapers or magazines. The photograph is visible when viewed from at least a few feet away.

Picture Ledge

One might argue that ‘clever’ may not be the best description of Raumgestalt’s Picture Ledge, as it is, in fact, two pieces of wood held together by an elastic band. The more craftier among us may be able to replicate the design with just a little elbow grease (to cut the wood) and determination (to search for the right sort of rubber band). However, if you refuse to pick up a hand saw and really, really need a place to display some extra pictures, notes or photos, maybe you’ll decide to buy a few of the ledges and call it a day*.

Vinyl Record Frames

If you’ve got a vinyl collection, you must show off some of your favorites- it’s a law, I think. If you’re still searching for the right thing, consider these Vinyl Record Frames. They make it easy to slip a record in and out so you can play or display your LPs whenever you want. They’re easy to install too- drywall screws are included but you can use indoor mounting tape or nails if you’re feeling extra lazy.

Raised Fist Poster

The clenched fist is a “a universal sign of solidarity and support.” Should you feel beaten down by the news of the past few days, remember, you are not alone. This particular print may just be enough to keep you going… organizing, uniting, and working to make sure your voice is heard.

OMY Giant Coloring Page

C’mon, it looks fun, right? A giant coloring page to fill, with markers or crayons or both. You could certainly wile a few minutes (or hours) away, and we’ve not even talked about how much kids would like it. Pin it in the hallway at home or at the office with a box of art supplies nearby so people will occasionally stop to help out (and smell the scented markers). Plus, everything seems to move a little slower from February to March, so no one will notice if you end up filling in a section or two all by yourself.

Mozartkugel Music Box

What do you get the person who has everything? A Mozartkugel Music Box, of course. Turn the key and Mozart’s ‘Voi Che Sapete’ from ‘Marriage of Figaro’ begins playing from inside the large, solid wooden ball. Magic? We wish. This wind-up music box is cleverly designed by Adam + Harborth of Siebensachen and is available in Light Beech, Dark Smoked Oak, special edition #01 Snowball, or special edition #03 Golden Oak.

Portfolio

So, this isn’t a scrapbook, it’s a Portfolio. That’s said with a teensy bit of snobbery, by the way. A thick paper accordion is held between two pieces of solid oak with a large rubber band to hold it all together. Think of it as a cool way to showcase photos and/or drawings- perhaps from a vacation or special event (gift alert!). When opened, the Portfolio stands on its own for display.

Hay Cacti

Ceramic cacti: they’re perfect for you, even if you tend to kill every plant you’ve ever touched. Sculptor Lina Cofán has crafted these life-size cacti to give you very low maintenance plants. Sure, they’re a bit shiny, but they won’t need a drop of water. And, as long as you don’t drop them, they’ll last forever. Kinda fun, right?

Map of the Constellations

Are you going to stay up late to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower tonight? You should try, as there’s going to be quite the show- between 160 and 200 meteors every hour until Friday morning. That’s a “meteor hurricane.” For other times, you could gaze upon Best Made’s Map of the Constellations to contemplate the stars above, as it charts the stars of both northern and southern hemispheres and includes helpful diagrams of earth’s axis, phases of the moon, solstices, equinoxes, and eclipses.

Brass Mobiles

Intricate brass pieces on these mobiles turn and shift with slight changes in the air, catching light and casting shadows. The delicate nature is fine and precious, and the thin, slow moving, branch-like arms will add a dynamic element to your space. Think of it as a special finishing touch to a room, much like a refined piece of jewelry you add to complete an outfit.

Coloring Washi Tape

Um, say goodbye to your productivity, because there’s patterned Washi Tape that you can color. Now you have an excellent excuse to give people gifts, and those gifts don’t even have to be particularly special or amazing, because you colored the tape with your own two freaking hands. You’ll have to make a point of this or else your hard work will be ignored and forgotten, and that is just not acceptable.

The Mesh Canvas: Frank Stella

It’s unlikely that you know a lot of people that love Frank Stella’s art and needlepoint, but in case you know just one, this set would be an excellent (and extravagant) gift. The set is a limited-edition needlepoint cushion, brought about by The Mesh Canvas, a collaboration between Frank Stella, Art in America and Artspace, and “allows the viewer to become involved in the creative process.”
