Pedestals

Oh, what to do with a ho-hum vase, plant, or weird thingamajig? Put it on a pedestal! That phrase might sound like a pop song’s title (and maybe it is) but placing an item on one of these wood pedestals elevates it into special viewing territory, which makes it slightly less tchotchke-esque and a little more ‘oo-what’s that?’ They’re sold as a set of two, so starting thinking which two of your favorite things deserve a little more visual attention.

Stanley Magnetic Photo Stand by Plywerk

You’ve got to show off your favorite photographs somehow, because zooming in on a device just doesn’t do them justice. Instead of settling for sub-par frames at a local shop (ick), consider the Stanley Magnetic Photo Stand by Plywerk. Two pieces of walnut (locally harvested, hazard or salvaged) have super strong neodymium magnets that snap together to hold your favorite snaps. No glass to break, and you can change the wood around to rest flat, curved, or flipped. Or separate the two pieces and use them as magnets on the fridge. Snappity snap snap.

Bushel Brush by Fredericks & Mae

Let’s feast our eyes on the Bushel Brushes by Fredericks & Mae. Are they weird and wonderful? Yes. May you use them for practical things like cleaning? Indeed, you may. How about fun things like painting? Yes, though do be sure to clean the brushes very thoroughly afterwards. You could also just keep one or two on your desk for sweeping away dust and crumbs, and that way you’d be justified to keep them out on display all the time just so you could turn them over and admire the dotted colors hidden within the nylon fibers.

Neon Mfg. Signs

What if neon signs were more affordable? Maybe you would snap one up faster than you could say ‘do i really need one’ or maybe you couldn’t care less. Either way, some of us like that neon glow, and will spend the next few minutes contemplating just what word or short saying we’d most like to see each and every day, and then we’ll be happy that we could order a sign with up to ten letters for $350. Neon Mfg. also has plenty of pre-made options that might work for your wall as well: ‘Hustle‘ and ‘What If‘ ($125 each) are my favorites.

Gather, Observe, Ponder Banner

Not a bad slogan to live by, is it? Handmade by Winter Cabin Collection, this banner is belongs to a collection of goods brought about by the partnership of the American Museum of Natural History and Etsy. There’s several things to catch the eye and tempt the wallet, but this banner is probably the most altruistic purchase, as it will most likely inspire others (we can hope).

The Ravens

If only we had done a little research beforehand, a few of these iBride Ravens would be decorating our homes for this All Hallows’ Eve. Maybe you can get ahead of the game by buying one or two for next year, or maybe you’ll like to keep them out year round- they’ll be very quiet companions, I assure you. They arrive at your door needing a little assembly yet already named- the one with outspread wings goes by the name of Karl.

mc squares dry-erase system

Dry erase boards are great for jotting down ideas and collaborating, but they’ve also got limitations. It’s not easy to take a big dry erase board from conference room to office, and often only a few people can use one board at the same time. The mc squares dry-erase system solves those issues. They’re small, personal dry erase boards that can be combined on the wall or moved around as ideas and projects change. Magnets on the back mount to a wall bracket for display, and you may combine as many as you’d like for a large scale presentation. See the Kickstarter video below for more info.

Two-Propeller Mobile

Do you need an expensive, tabletop mobile? No, you don’t, unless you’ve got stacks of money lying around. However, you might want a “poetic work of wood, piano wire, and concrete” by François Azambourg, as it’s a quiet piece of kinetic sculpture that’s sure to calm your mind. If you’re even a tiny bit interested, I can recommend watching the L’ATELIER d’exercices’ video, as it shows how each mobile is made.

Neon Alphabet

Just in case you’re in the market for not-inexpensive wall art, take a look at the Neon Alphabet letters from Bernadette Deddens and Tetsuo Mukai of London-based Study O Portable. Each 10″ letter is made from borosilicate glass tubes and patinated fine silver; these materials reflect “ambient light as a frozen spectrum of deep, rich color.” The price is per letter, so don’t go getting your heart set on buying enough letters for your favorite quote.

Vasa Mihich Blades Sculpture

Not every home can stomach super modern sculptures, mostly because they’re not exactly kid-friendly, but also because modern art can be prohibitively expensive for a more modest budget. However, these sleek, colorful acrylic sculptures by Vasa Mihich aren’t going to make you choke when you hear the price- or maybe they will if you have a very, very modest budget- but for those of us that wouldn’t mind investing in such splendor for under the $1G mark, it looks like a safe bet. There are also smaller, less expensive pieces on Vasa Mihich’s site. Hmm, what was that? Why, yes, my birthday is coming up, how kind of you to remember.

Spektral Mobile

As we anxiously await spring, let’s preemptively add color to the dreariest room in the house with a colorful Spektral Mobile. Yes, it is very colorful and would be quite the brave decision for those of us prone to choosing grays, blacks, and browns when it comes to furnishings and accessories, but it would be nice to see a little rainbow color moving around in the breeze, wouldn’t it?
