Vases

Can Vase

I’m a little in love with this simple vase. It has a series of interchangeable caps that complement the simple receptacle, giving you various options to display your floral arrangements. Or maybe you’d prefer just a vase caps to add to any glass you currently have for a quick modern update? Several designs are available.

Pillow Stack Vase Series, Eva Zeisel

If you know someone that’s a fan of Eva Zeisel, and they don’t have this stacking Pillow Vase set, then you have a potential slam dunk gift on your hands. Conceived as a series, the three vases stand on their own as functioning vases, yet also stack to form a larger piece. Each piece is slip cast porcelain with KleinReid’s signature satin matte glaze and are available separately as well.

Cantine Vases

What!? You still need a gift idea for your mother? Hop to it, as the online ordering and shipping window is slowly closing in on you (a few more days, though, so don’t panic just yet). Perhaps a nice, small bouquet of flowers tucked into a perfectly small vase would be suitable, and, if you agree, may I suggest the cork and glass vases by Véronique Maire? Each glass base is topped with various cork hats that create their rounded silhouettes, and while one on its own would be special and sweet, they do look wonderful as a group of three or five.

Bauhaus Airvases

At first glance, these Airvases by Torafu Architects seem too light and, well, airy, to pay much attention to, but then the ‘Bauhaus’ title piques one’s interest. Rather bold designs appear on these flexible and lightweight paper vases when seen from different angles, giving an interesting play of postitive/negative space. The set of three airvases arrive flat and ready for sculpting.

Japanese Shouting Vase

This vase is definitely not the prettiest of things, but it sure does pack a useful punch of a function: it absorbs your screams, shouts and frustrations. When you release your expletives/anger, only a whisper soft version comes out through the tiny hole at the base (do be sure to use it in a wise location). The gift scenarios are endless, of course, so it wouldn’t hurt to bookmark it for the future.

Clear Glass Beakers

Beakers: receptacle for flowers or just a decorative item to make you look interesting? Actually, the whole I’m-influenced-by-science-and-taxidermy trend has sort of come and gone (though it could be argued that abc home carries them is proof to the contrary), so you’re most likely in safe territory to add a few to your collection without getting the icky ‘trendy’ label. Not that we care about such things, of course.

FlexVase

This vase allows you to switch out the top for specific arrangements. Have a bigger bouquet? Use the wider mouth. Have a single stem? Use the tiny one. Three options with one base, and that means less to store in the cupboards. The tops clip on with a tight seal similar to canning jars.

Lace Vase

Reuse your plastic and glass containers with this rubber top. It fits over all sorts of containers, and makes an instant vase out of most things currently sitting in your recycling bin. Looks like black is currently the only color in stock, but if you’re set on white let them know and hopefully you’ll get an idea of when it will be available.

Spectra Vases

Just how lovely are these glass nesting vases? So lovely that they’re being reshuffled to an updated post for today, as the link and price changed slightly.

Pastels can sometimes look a bit boring, but these shades are quite beautiful. And, did you know that these colors are the same formulas as the original glass first made at Holmegaard back in 1839? Antique colors for a modern design… nice.

Stacking Vessels

These stacking vessels by Pia Wüstenberg are something else. It’s tempting to file them under ‘art’ instead of ‘vases’. Be prepared for a little sticker shock though, as piece is handmade and consists of three individual containers. See piadesign for more images showing how light filters through them; it’s simply lovely. One of these would make a very special gift.

The Humble Stoneware Crock

The stoneware crock became a houseware staple around 1720 in the North East United States, typically bearing a salt glaze and cobalt oxide blue stamps of the potters who made them. They’re incredibly sturdy, relatively inexpensive and simple in execution.

The wide mouth and base make the 1 gallon crock perfect for kitchen utensil storage and it’s heavy enough that I don’t have to worry about it tipping over.

Sponge Vase

From our archives (originally published Oct 2, 2007), for your gift list consideration…to see more, visit our Gift Guide.

I’ve long admired this vase… designed by Marcel Wanders, of course.

“this piece is created by dipping a sponge form into fluid porcelain clay. After drying, the piece is fired in an oven where the sponge burns away leaving only the porcelain in its place. In this way porcelain products can be made without a mold.”

Librate Vase

This vase changes position based on the amount of water and the length of your flowers. Makes for an interesting arrangement when there’s several grouped together. Nice.
