How about a handmade carafe or two (or three)? Carafes are the sort of thing you think you don’t need, and then when you have one you realize just how useful they can be. The larger sizes would be appropriate for water, juice, or wine at the table, while the smaller size could work for milk or cream during coffee/tea time. This carafe set has been around a while, yet we all need reminding that there’s no need for trays when it comes to refreshments. Yeah, you remember these, don’t you? They’ve been featured here before (years ago) and therefore need a fresh post with a link that works. They’re glass bottles in the same shape as the familiar plastic bottle, thus drawing attention to consumerism and reinforcing the reuse/recycle ethos. But it’s made of glass, you say, and will break! Not necessarily, as the bottles are made from borosilicate glass (the same stuff your Pyrex measuring cup is made of).

Seeing as it’s hot outside and will stay that way for a while yet, it’s best to keep hydrated. And what better way to keep water on hand than with a carafe? This Motion carafe by by Ole Jensen for Normann Copenhagen brings a little dynamic motion into the equation, as it is always in a tilted position. While the movement might take a while to get used to, it will attract attention to its function, as Ole Jensen intended.

Carafes are often underrated, but possibly because there’s few that catch the eye and hold the attention (if only for more than a few moments). They’re extremely handy for keeping water or other refreshments at hand, and eliminate unnecessary trips to and from the kitchen or bar. This carafe set by Muuto is slightly oversized with a nice cork stopper that emphasizes the overall width and shape. Andreas Engesvik, the designer, was inspired by the archetypical bottle, and the familiar form is sure to work just as well at home as in the office.

This carafe by designer Céline Frébault for Sentou incorporates a rather odd beaker-like handle, which fills when the carafe is full. As far as carafes go, it’s definitely got a high end (semi-mad-scientist?) look… any guesses as to the price? Is it $50, $100, $200?

The stopper on this carafe looks like it could double as a spinning top, though I suppose you would want to be rather careful about suggesting that to (childish) guests, as you’d not want it lost or damaged. That said, it’d be a lovely serving vessel for lemonade or juice for these last few days of summer.

Similar in usage to the French Stacking Carafe, this Stainless Steel Carafe set has cups that stack and nest within the mouth, allowing for easy transport to and from the table. However, unlike the glass of the French Carafe, this 1 litre double-walled carafe will keep your drinks at the temperature you want- hot or cold.

All you do is freeze a little water in this carafe (on its side), then once it sets, you fill the rest of the carafe up with water and watch the ice slowly release. It’s a smart idea for streamlining the cold drink process.
