No one wants to see your trash, trust me, so hide it away with these paper baskets that have a swinging lid. Perfect for a bathroom, right? And yes, you did read ‘paper’- these look like teak wood but they’re made from a plywood of sorts that is stained in 6 different tones and then laid out to resemble teak.

Hideaway Trash Bin

The humble field of trash bin design is unexciting to say the least; there’s just not much going on in the way of improvements. Muuto adds another un-fancy option to the mix- it’s just a simple bin with a lid- yet with a few extra noteworthy details. The exterior is streamlined, so it could just as easily live in your closet as a laundry basket; that gets points for versatility in the aesthetic department, don’t you think? When the lid is on, an interior trash bag is hidden by the lid’s lip. When the lid is off, it can hang on the side of the bin for easy access and safekeeping.

Dustbin by Brendan Ravenhill

Brendan Ravenhill has incorporated a dustpan into the lid of a trashcan, making most trashcan manufacturers look like idiots for not thinking of the idea before. The steel can and lid is powder coated for durability and the included beech wood brush attaches to the side of the bin with embedded rare earth magnets. It’s not often that one can express admiration over a waste container, but in this case, it’s entirely appropriate. Well done, Mr. Ravenhill, well done.

Well, this would certainly make separating your trash easy and straightforward. The small bin is perfect for compost, as it can be easily carried to your nearest compost heap and is dishwasher proof, while the larger bin will take your paper and plastic recycling. I’d say it’s a smart choice for your kitchen or your office.

Eno Trash Basket, Magazine holder

Yes, this is a pricey, but may I direct your attention towards the handles, one of which is angled for ease of moving/emptying, the other at the bottom for lifting leverage? I might recommend this as a paper recycling basket/holder rather than a trash receptacle, but either way this is an improvement upon the regular (non-ergonomic) bin that you find at any household supply retailer. It’s such a shame it’s not more affordable.

Basket – Lacquered resin (stone powder and compressed wood)

Urbano Trash Can

No matter if you’ve made the switch to reusable totes or not, extraneous plastic bags crop up. The perfect way to handle that situation is with this smart trash can that stores the bags for use as a liner.

Winner of the Pratt Product Design Competition, this clever trash can allows you to store and reuse the plastic bags that you collect from shopping in a neat, organized way. Simply loop trash bags around the cut-out sides and push them all the way down, creating a visual of stacked handles all along the side. When you are ready to use one, just move it up to the handles and hook so that it won’t fall in on itself. Made in the USA.
