An inkless pen? Just how is that possible? Well, it involves a mixture of lead and metal alloy (lead = be careful, don’t let kids use it, etc.) that creates a grey line like a pencil, except it doesn’t smudge and can’t be erased. Oh, and it never needs refills. Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?

Why would you pay $28 for three pencils? Good question. Maybe because each pencil “explores our primal desire for soothing haptic response and fulfills our need for tactile gratification.” Does that sound about right? Do you use pencils? Do you have a plastic pencil sharpener? Pfft. Toss it in the recycling bin, because this one is much better. Made of solid brass, the Dux sharpener is built to last. The weight of it alone would keep it from getting lost/shuffled around with your other desk tools, but there’s no guarantee that it wouldn’t walk away with a coworker, so watch out.

This was a favorite find of mine during a recent visit to Hand Eye Supply. I swear by my trusty Staedler lead holder for fine lines and controlled precision, but I can’t help but want to buy this Wörther Shorty for just the opposite reason; fast sketching and writing with big, fat strokes, compliments of its hefty 3mm soft lead. Available in plastic, natural aluminum, and maple. Prices range from $15 – $35 depending on material. Comes with two spare leads.

Travelteq just added this Pencil Holder to their shop and it sure looks like a nice way to store your pencils, color or otherwise. Handmade from Florentine Vacchetta leather, it certainly has a Patrician flair, especially compared to what you’d find at a student art shop, and I’d be willing to bet it’ll stay intact after years of use. It fits 19 pencils; color pencils from Bruynzeel included.
