Baskets aren’t usually the first thing you’ll find in a modern interior, but this Fair Trade Basket Collection possesses a sharp, sculptural quality that would do well whether used as objets d’art or as functional storage pieces. Made from palm wood, these baskets would normally warp over time, but Piet Hein Eek chose to string thin slats together to allow for shrinking and expansion.
“Widely used in Southeast Asia, these type of containers could work as fruit bowls, as dinner table centerpieces, or just to hold whatever is needed. Each piece was handcrafted in a Vietnamese family-owned workshop according to the Fair Trade principles. The wooden slabs are tightened with wire and knotted using a technique developed by the village’s fisherman.”
