Slow Factory Scarves

What do you get the person who loves cosmology and/or fashionable things? One of these scarves from Slow Factory, of course. The 30% Silk/70% Cotton scarves start at a reasonable $80, while the 100% silk scarves go up to the $200 price point. Might be a nice Mother’s Day gift, perhaps? Or a reward for doing your taxes? Hmm, bookmark it in either case.

Broom Holder

Your broom needs a little love. Trust me, it told me so. It’s sick of being thrown in a closet and left on the floor, like it means nothing to you, and it wants to be held aloft by this Broom Holder, so it’s kept neatly on the wall, at the ready for your next mess. Dare I say this holder is nice enough to not live in a closet? Your decision, but I think it just might be (especially if you have one of Minam’s Barn Brooms).

Tab Shelf

Sure, it’s a shelf, what of it? Well, this powder-coated steel shelf has a ridge down the middle to keep photos and art propped up as well as a lip on the front. That allows you to display all sorts of things without worrying about little (or big) things falling off, which makes it suitable for anywhere you need an extra display or storage space.

Limited Edition Key Targets

You get a double whammy of Bower Studios today. Throw your keys at the target and a magnet will catch them- a simple idea with a fun graphic image, in quite a few color options, I should add. Take note that these color options are limited edition, and Areaware will carry other variations later in May.

Bob and Sara Lamps by Dan Yeffet

Molded blown glass forms the base and shade of the Bob and Sara Lamps by designer Dan Yeffet. If you’ve not heard of Yeffet yet, just wait a little while, his name will pop up. The two intersecting columns on these two lamps have slight variants in shade- the darker shade at the base- which helps highlight the craftsmanship of blown glass formed into a traditional lamp shape.

Shape Boards

Gah! I didn’t think it possible to admire a cutting board so much. This collection of Shape Boards from Bower Studio (also available from Cooper-Hewitt Shop) has my head in a spin. The blank side is for cutting, the (non-toxic) painted side for a decorative twist of a 3D geometric shape. And, get ready for it, Bower Studio also has Shape Mirrors, but that’s for another post (tomorrow).

    Copenhague Desk

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are at it again with the Copenhague Desk, created for the new buildings at the University of Copenhagen. While originally designed for dorm rooms, classrooms, and common spaces, I think most of us will agree that the desk and chair look a heck of a lot nicer than anything we sat on at any stage of our schooling, and deserve to be somewhere better, maybe in our home office or spare room perhaps? The Copenhague Desk has trestle style legs with a backrest for leaning books, notepads, or tablets and is made from lacquered Oak.

Starry and Cloud Swirl Tea Towels

It’s been a little while since a tea towel has been featured, and for all we know you’re standing there with your hands wet from the sink and nowhere to turn. Not to fret, dry your hands on your shirt and then buy a tea towel or two for all sorts of kitchen mop-ups. Piano Nobile’s Starry and Cloud Swirl Tea Towels are just as good as some of the art on your walls (probably), and the designs are printed with non-toxic ink on a GOTS-certified linen tea towel with neon pink edging.

    Grab & Go Coasters

These look a little similar to Food Huggers, don’t they? (Note to self: try out Food Huggers as coasters.) They do to me, and I wonder if condensation gets caught by the coaster or if the coasters are such a tight fit that condensation simply runs off the side. In any case, a coaster that stays with your drink (and possibly catches condensation) is a good fix for all those cold, drippy beverages that you’ll have this summer.

    Kid O Beach Tools

If I say ‘beach’ and you say ‘sandcastles!’ then you probably need to investigate these tools by Kid O. Yes, they’re for kids, but you can use them too. You and your little ones can shovel, sift, and rake using the Triplet Toy Shovel and Rake (pictured above/below), or dig and sift using the Scoppi Toy Shovel. There’s also the Ballo Toy Water Bucket with a spherical shape for easier transport from sea to sandcastle.

    Nunabee Color Chip Boxes

Just how fun are these handmade boxes by Danish company nunabee? They would hold all manner of knickknacks, office supplies, accessories, etc., and cheer you up while doing so. If you’ve plenty of bills in that wallet of yours, you could also use it to present a special gift, in a gift-within-a-gift sort of way.

    Evernote Triangle Commuter Bag

Messenger bags are okay, but what about one that won’t tip over when you set it down? That problem is solved by Japanese brand Abrasus: a triangular shape keeps the bag upright and allows you a bird’s-eye view of your contents when you unzip, allowing you to find your things efficiently. There are inside movable dividers for organization and an outside vented pocket allows you to see (and hear) smaller items.

    Swivel Spork And Knife Set

Well, if the MoMA Store is carrying a Spork, then you know it’s an acceptable utensil to have in your everyday bag, camping backpack, or travel carry-on. Should you see anyone turn up their nose at your use of an orange, swiveling Spork and/or Knife, simply inform them that Wei Young designed the set in 2012 out of BPA-Free plastic and metal. Or just smirk in self-satisfaction at your preparedness: you have an eating utensil, after all, and it’s clean. Or flip them the bird, it’s up to you.

    Obtineo Collection

If ordinary storage jars just won’t do, you’ll want to take a look at the Obtineo Collection by Yorkshire-based designer Tom Hutchinson. Handcrafted entirely in the UK, each storage jar is made from turned solid ash and oak, hand-blown glass, 100% wool felt, and a silicone seal to ensure a tight fit. Use them in the kitchen for storing foodstuffs or in the bathroom or office for organizing smaller items. Pledge £30 or more to back the project and receive one (or many) jar(s) of your very own.
