Loveseat Shift by Margaux Keller

I know you’re in the thick of things, picking out holiday gifts in these last days of the non-rush shipping window, but let’s take a break and look at this Loveseat Shift by Margaux Keller. It’s not a traditional upholstered two-person seat, instead, the smaller stool has been modified to create a potential perch for two. The size is entirely suitable as a side table or extra seat, and the clever spliced shape will add a little bit of humor to an interior.

Anita Johansen Day Bed

I know, I know, you’re in full gift-getting mode and have little interest in improving your home’s seating options, but just take a moment to look at this daybed. Its simple ash frame nods to Nordic construction while the thin ribbing of the seat cushion adds a big dose of modernism. The size would easily fit in a hallway, conversation area, or bedroom and its quiet sophistication is friendly rather than intimidating. Designed by Anita Johansen, the day bed is available in a Dark Black with black leather or a lighter, natural ash with grey wool.

Sleeper Sofas

Holidays almost always means visitors, family or friends, and if you like those visitors enough to invite them to stay at your home, you certainly don’t want them to sleep on the floor. Unless you’re fortunate enough to have a whole dedicated room just for guests (lucky you), you’ll need a sleeper sofa. Here’s a few sleepers that look comfortable to sit on and comfortable enough to get a decent night’s rest, not to mention they’re utterly acceptable to shoe-horn into your modern-ish abode.

Yogibo Bean Bag

If you can get past the fact that this is, in fact, a bean bag, let’s ask this question: Does this or does this not look incredibly comfortable? I know, I know, it’s really hard to get past the video-gaming-soda-drinking sort of perception we have of bean bags, and, let’s be clear, no one is saying you should put this in your living room next to a Wegner Chair (the horror!).

Revolver Stool

There’s no telling how much fun you’ll have with a spinning barstool, but enjoyment aside, there’s a practicality in having a stool rotate a complete 360 degrees: ease of use. The Revolver Stool designed by Leon Ransmeier for HAY has circular seat, upper leg portion and footrest that spins completely around, giving you a comfortable and sensible seating option that fits in nicely with many a modern interior. And the price? Not too bad, considering the other barstools on our want list.

Sawkille Co. Stools

Finding beautifully made barstools with a pared-down aesthetic is not an easy task, and that’s exactly why the stools from Sawkille Co. stand out. A little Shaker influence is apparent, as these hand-crafted wood pieces draw from a “farmhouse modern aesthetic” that designer Johan Meyer strips down for a more modern result with pure, clean lines. Sawkille Co. has its headquarters and showroom in Rhinebeck, NY, so if you’re ever passing through, you’d be crazy not to stop and take a look.

Stanley Stool

Can you have too many stools and side tables? Nah. Sterling Side Table Stool

For $100, you could do so much worse than this Sterling Side Table/Stool. Believe me, I just did a quick search and it’s not a pretty sight. Save yourself by considering this sand cast aluminum seating option. It has a slight rippled surface thanks to its hand-poured nature, with a high mirrored finish to obtain a sleek-yet-subtle vibe.

ZZZ Stool

Another piece from Ethnicraft’s Universo Positivo collection? You got it, and it certainly won’t put you to sleep. When a room has to function in multiple ways, it’s best to choose pieces that are robust and versatile. This ZZZ Stool is made from powder coated steel and may also function as a side table, which checks off both boxes. One would assume it would be safe outdoors as well.

Fronzoni Chair

This chair might not look like the most comfortable, but it is delightfully minimal. Graphic designer A.G. Forzoni designed this metal square tube frame and lacquered wood seat back in 1964, and its simplicity lies in Forzoni’s goal to “avoid waste and excess.” White or anthracite will set you back just over a grand, and for another Benjamin (plus some) you can get one lacquered in India blue, sun-yellow or cherry-red.

Eames® Molded Plastic Chairs

I know, I know, you don’t need any temptation to buy new furniture, especially as you’re in back-to-school mode. Even if you don’t go to school, or don’t have kids in school, it’s still the end of summer, and that means your nose should be back to the grindstone. That said, there are some new colors for the Eames® Molded Plastic Chairs, and after clicking on a few combinations, it seems awfully tempting to inject some color into a dining area by buying just a couple of new chairs. Two new armchairs, perhaps? Or four new DSWs? Aqua Sky, Blue Ice, Kelly Green, Pale Yellow, Stone.. my goodness, nine new colors with eight (eight!) leg options is enough to make your head spin.

Sprig Bar Stool

I’ve been a big fan of Council ever since they first hit the design scene, so it’s no surprise this Sprig Bar Stool has shot to the top of my favorite barstool list. A powder-coated steel frame will ensure durability, while a subtle angle at the seat back and front makes for comfortable seating. The overall minimal shape has a stainless steel footrest to make it a little more special, and you’ll be happy to note the barstool can be used indoors or outside.
