Seating

Ro Lounge Chair

Slow down, take a seat. Breathe in, breathe out. ‘Ro’ is Danish for “tranquility” after all, so you are assigned to nothing but relaxation when you rest your weary legs on this comfortable armchair. A flared outer shell and a tufted back give a nod back to the more traditional aspects of lounge seating, while Jaime Hayon’s organic lines and fabric pairings root it firmly in the present. This may just be the perfect reading chair for a living room, study, or bedroom. Don’t we all need (another) one of those?

Tangerine Barstool

I meant what I said about looking out for decent barstools. This Tangerine Barstool by Simon James for Resident Studio has a subtle curve to its seat to make things comfortable. Solid oak contrasts nicely with the dark steel crossbars to provide a perch that quietly performs its function without commanding too much attention. Call me crazy, but that’s refreshing amongst all the other crazy, colorful stools that are just a bit too loud for most minimal interiors.

Mega 2 Seater and Daybed

Close your eyes and imagine the smell of freshly baked bread. Now open them and feast your hungry eyes on the Mega 2 Seater and Daybed. See any similarities? Designer Chris Martin was inspired by risen loaves against a metal frame in a bakery, and now we can all get an idea of what sitting on bread would feel like, with the added bonus of continual comfort, of course.

Scout Tall Stool

I know finding the right barstools are tough, and that’s exactly why I keep my eyes out for anything remotely interesting or decent. Surname’s Scout Stools are more than decent, they’re downright perfect. No frills except for a brass or copper finish on the footrest, each stool is made from antique heart pine salvaged from dismantled New York area buildings. A gentle slope to the seat keeps your backside comfortable, and your wallet will be happy to see the price tag is just under the $300 mark.

In Between Chair

You might sense a resemblance to Hans Wegner’s Wishbone Chair in the curved back rail of this chair, and you’d be spot on, as designer Sami Kallio has a high regard for the world renowned Danish designer. Kallio’s chair occupies a certain ‘in between’ place in method of manufacturing as each one is hand and machine made. Ash and oak, the two options, both respond quite well to woodturning, more of classic hand-held lathe technique, and compression molding, a technique that allows for strength despite an overall lightness. The back and side panels provide support as well as a nicely contrasting visual gap.

Swedese Spin Stool

The good news is the Spin Stool from Swedese in now on sale over at the Finnish Design Shop. The bad news is that shipping to the United States is sort of expensive- you’d still save a little cash, just not as much as if you were in the EU/UK. Made from laminated ash veneer, the Spin Stool is available in black, white, ash, grey, yellow, orange, and blue.

Cinto Lounge Chair

I know, I know, it’s tough to find the right lounge chair. Sometimes they’re waaay too expensive, and sometimes they look like they’re fit more for a college dorm than a mostly responsible adult’s living space. So, let’s look at the Cinto: it has a safari-plus-Danish vibe that suits our sort of style and the white leather is a little daring (not recommended if you have kids that run around with sticky food or paint on their hands, of course) and just the right amount of luxe. Is it a good fit for your space?

Afteroom Bench by Menu

You could say that this price is kind of high for a skinny leather bench, but then I’d need to remind you that it has a marble side table incorporated into its powder-coated metal frame and it would be a cool piece to have in an entryway or odd corner space, especially as it would add seating without taking up too much visual or physical space. Then you’d say I’m right, and we would both be glad we’re friends that can discuss design without punching each other in the face.

Commune Leather Sling Chair

Ready for another Commune + West Elm piece? This wood-framed sling chair knocks the socks off other lounge chairs from the retailer, as it has raw, undyed leather for an authentic feel. That plus the angular frame and stitching gives an eclectic personality that would fit easily into most rooms, giving you lots of options on placement. Living room, bedroom, study… put this Sling Chair anywhere and enjoy it as the leather develops a vintage patina (it’ll look even better).

Chairs by Donald Judd

So, how big a fan are you of Donald Judd, on a scale of 1 to 10? If you answered 7 or above, you might just like a reminder that Artware Editions is selling Judd’s chairs, $1,800+. I’m thrilled, though I might have to save up, as collecting some of the “most recognizable and significant artist-designed furniture in existence” isn’t cheap*. Cork Family Stools

Lest we forget, Jasper Morrison’s Cork Family is a smart choice for any living area. Each piece could be a side table or stool and is light enough to move around easily. Cork is also pretty tough, so you wouldn’t need to be too precious with keeping it away from kids. Oh, and you could also use them outside if you so desire. Available in 3 different styles (and yes, they’re priced individually).
