Cherner® Task Chair

Did you know about the contentious history of the Cherner Chair? I didn’t, but I’m glad Cherner’s sons revived their father’s designs, and created the variation you see above. Task chairs often look terrible, no matter today’s advanced ergonomic technology, and the simplicity of such classic lines when applied to an office/desk area seating option is enormously appealing. Now that we’ve agreed its aesthetic appeal, someone just needs to test out how comfortable this chair is after a few hours’ work.

TON Chair 77

$99! No, that’s not an April Fool’s joke, that is the actual price of this chair originally designed by the legendary Czech furniture maker Michael Thonet. Recognize the name? Thonet is known for his iconic bentwood chairs in 1861, and TON updates the original design with a slim, rectangular backrest and a few gentle curves that show off the subtle flair possible with steam-bending techniques.

Tractor vs. Metro Barstool

Hmm, these two stools are very similar, aren’t they? Is one flattering the other by imitating certain aspects of design or is it just a case of blatant copying? One was designed in 2000/2001 and the other showed up this recently this year. One costs four times what the other does, for good reason if the descriptions are anything to go by. I’ll leave it to you to decide if it’s an ‘inspired by’ situation or a flat out copy-cat.

Metamorphic Chair-Stool-Side table

Do you remember this chair by John Reeves? It’s remarkable: a stool becomes a chair and vice versa, simply by lifting or lowering the seat back. Several chairs can be stacked as stools, leaving a very small footprint for a whole lot of seating. Perhaps this same idea has been employed before, but I’d reckon it would be hard to find a sample with the same degree of thoughtful design and simplicity. (Update: now on sale for $416.50 from $595)

There’s also a Pouf Ottoman to rest your tired feet, the Basset 2-Seater to share with your loved one, or a 2.5-Seater or a 3-Seater if you need a little more breathing room.
