Lounge Chairs

Ro Lounge Chair

Slow down, take a seat. Breathe in, breathe out. ‘Ro’ is Danish for “tranquility” after all, so you are assigned to nothing but relaxation when you rest your weary legs on this comfortable armchair. A flared outer shell and a tufted back give a nod back to the more traditional aspects of lounge seating, while Jaime Hayon’s organic lines and fabric pairings root it firmly in the present. This may just be the perfect reading chair for a living room, study, or bedroom. Don’t we all need (another) one of those?

Neat Lounge Chair

Look at this cute little lounge chair from Blu Dot. It’s completely upholstered, so it has a snug and comfortable appearance. Sure, it looks friendly, and your backside will most likely confirm that its sloping seat and back is indeed amiable. Choose Citron or Blue for a color kick, or Grey for a more subdued statement.

Cinto Lounge Chair

I know, I know, it’s tough to find the right lounge chair. Sometimes they’re waaay too expensive, and sometimes they look like they’re fit more for a college dorm than a mostly responsible adult’s living space. So, let’s look at the Cinto: it has a safari-plus-Danish vibe that suits our sort of style and the white leather is a little daring (not recommended if you have kids that run around with sticky food or paint on their hands, of course) and just the right amount of luxe. Is it a good fit for your space?

Commune Leather Sling Chair

Ready for another Commune + West Elm piece? This wood-framed sling chair knocks the socks off other lounge chairs from the retailer, as it has raw, undyed leather for an authentic feel. That plus the angular frame and stitching gives an eclectic personality that would fit easily into most rooms, giving you lots of options on placement. Living room, bedroom, study… put this Sling Chair anywhere and enjoy it as the leather develops a vintage patina (it’ll look even better).

MG501 Cuba Chair

Say ‘folding chair’ and you immediately think of the cheap aluminum sort found at various community gatherings. Lucky you, just because your home is spatially challenged doesn’t mean you have to resort to those ugly things; take a look at the MG501 Cuba Chair by Morten Gottler. It’s light and flexible, and can easily fold up for storage- in a closet or hung on a wall. Natural cotton webbing straps provide support and comfort.

Nokori Folding Chair

Is this the nicest folding chair you’ve seen in a while, or what? Hand-rubbed mahogany wood combined with heavy English Bridle leather make this chair sturdy and stylish. Easy to move from room to room and easy to store, it’s a sure bet that you’ll not regret adding one (or two) of these to your home for extra seating options should the need arise. Available in Black or Natural.

Afteroom Lounge Chair

From the front or back, the Afteroom Lounge Chair may not look like anything special, but turn it slightly to the side and you’ll see the exaggerated arms swoop forward for an imposing silhouette. Afteroom’s Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei took inspiration from Thonet’s Bentwood Chair and Børge Mogensen’s Spanish Lounge, merging curves in powder-coated steel with low proportions and leather to make an interesting seating option for any lounge. Oh, and until March 31, get 20% off using code MS2016.

WM Lounge Chair

Fond of wire grids when it comes to seating (Bertoia, anyone?)? Well, take a look at Menu’s WM Lounge Chair. The light wire frame has an airy appearance, and the generous back means there’s plenty of room for a cushy throw pillow or blanket. Also available in a smaller dining chair, WM String Dining Chair ($249.00).

Muji’s Body Fit Cushion

If you think you know how to be lazy and while (or, wile, if you prefer) away the hours, you are in for a big surprise, because Muji’s Body Fit Cushion is now available in the US, and it’s going to test your limits. Just how long can you sit and read a book? How long can you nap? What about meditating staring out the window? I bet you can double that time, easy, when you’re sitting upon this bulbous mound. Muji doesn’t exactly declare what’s inside of the cushion, but that’s okay as I’d rather not know and pretend it has something to do with high tech science or magic (or both).

Anderson Sling Chair

Chances are that you don’t recognize this chair right away, and that’s probably because it’s not made by a famous designer or manufacturer*. Instead, it’s from Slowood Studios and Hawkins New York. Slowood Studios is owned and operated by Jules Anderson and she designs and fabricates most of her pieces, from welding to staining. In the case of the Anderson Sling Chair**, the welded iron frame makes a sculptural statement while the untanned natural leather will be easy on your backside after a long day’s work. Minimal, comfortable, and different. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

CH28 vs. Lars Lounge Chair

When Room&Board released their new Lars Lounge Chair, I thought that maybe I had seen it somewhere before. Of course, it borrows heavily from a handful of classic Mid-20th century designs, and, in this particular case, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There’s lots of mid century lounge chairs that hit a pretty perfect note of top-notch design and comfort, and often you can find a pair for a decent price (i.e. less than $1k) if you scour eBay and/or resale shops. There’s also a plethora of dodgy manufacturers that copy classic designs outright, and that’s not cool (or so most people think, myself included) because it’s pretty much stealing someone’s work.

Yogibo Bean Bag

If you can get past the fact that this is, in fact, a bean bag, let’s ask this question: Does this or does this not look incredibly comfortable? I know, I know, it’s really hard to get past the video-gaming-soda-drinking sort of perception we have of bean bags, and, let’s be clear, no one is saying you should put this in your living room next to a Wegner Chair (the horror!).

Slow Chair & Ottoman

Whenever I see the Slow Chair by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra, I am reminded of the Maison Flottante where the chair is shown prominently as the main living area seating. Would you believe that the inspiration behind the Slow Chair was ladies’ tights? I’m sure you can, as the strong, precisely shaped knit is stretched over the metal frame, quite similar to a fitted stocking. This sling cover provides soft, ergonomic support and gives a lightweight appearance despite its generous proportions.

Chieftains Chair

When we originally posted the Chieftains Chair designed by Finn Juhl, it was 2011 and it cost $11,500. Today’s price finds it at $17,175, which, unfortunately, is much higher than the rate of inflation. And so goes the world of design classics and their price fluctuations.

Inspired by primitive weaponry, Juhl originally created the chair for the 1949 Cabinetmakers’ Guild in Copenhagen. I’ve long admired this chair, and while the price is firmly outside of any budget I might have in the foreseeable future, I can still appreciate the slight curves and teak and walnut frame that have made it one of the more iconic pieces of mid century design.

Basset Chair

Measuring in at 47″ wide and 39″ deep, this Basset Chair is what one would call a sit-down-and-curl-up-in-lounge chair. With a horizontal “pillow” for a seat and a wrap around back, it has a comfortable, huggable feel about it, making it perfect for catching up on your reading list or watching your favorite films. There’s also a Pouf Ottoman to rest your tired feet, the Basset 2-Seater to share with your loved one, or a 2.5-Seater or a 3-Seater if you need a little more breathing room.
