Lounge Chairs

Slow Chair & Ottoman

Whenever I see the Slow Chair by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra, I am reminded of the Maison Flottante where the chair is shown prominently as the main living area seating. Would you believe that the inspiration behind the Slow Chair was ladies’ tights? I’m sure you can, as the strong, precisely shaped knit is stretched over the metal frame, quite similar to a fitted stocking. This sling cover provides soft, ergonomic support and gives a lightweight appearance despite its generous proportions.

Chieftains Chair

When we originally posted the Chieftains Chair designed by Finn Juhl, it was 2011 and it cost $11,500. Today’s price finds it at $17,175, which, unfortunately, is much higher than the rate of inflation. And so goes the world of design classics and their price fluctuations.

Inspired by primitive weaponry, Juhl originally created the chair for the 1949 Cabinetmakers’ Guild in Copenhagen. I’ve long admired this chair, and while the price is firmly outside of any budget I might have in the foreseeable future, I can still appreciate the slight curves and teak and walnut frame that have made it one of the more iconic pieces of mid century design.

Basset Chair

Measuring in at 47″ wide and 39″ deep, this Basset Chair is what one would call a sit-down-and-curl-up-in-lounge chair. With a horizontal “pillow” for a seat and a wrap around back, it has a comfortable, huggable feel about it, making it perfect for catching up on your reading list or watching your favorite films. There’s also a Pouf Ottoman to rest your tired feet, the Basset 2-Seater to share with your loved one, or a 2.5-Seater or a 3-Seater if you need a little more breathing room.

Shell Chair, Maharam Fabric

Whoa, Wegner’s Shell Chair with Maharam fabric? Let’s just adjust to this slowly and give our brains time to absorb something as sacrosanct as the Shell with something as bright and colorful as the Maharam options. I think we approve- and by ‘we’ I mean you and I and not the royal ‘we’- don’t we?

MG501 Cuba Chair

Say ‘folding chair’ and you immediately think of the cheap aluminum sort found at various community gatherings. Lucky you, just because your home is spatially challenged doesn’t mean you have to resort to those ugly things; take a look at the MG501 Cuba Chair by Morten Gottler. It’s light and flexible, and can easily fold up for storage- in a closet or hung on a wall. Natural cotton webbing straps provide support and comfort. Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son.

Sedia 1 Chair

What?! You did’t build the chair you sit upon? Well, we all know that you’ve got extra elbow grease to spare, and hey, when’s the last time you picked up a hammer anyways? This Sedia Chair, designed by Enzo Mari in 1974, arrives ready for assembly; all you need is your brain, half an hour, and a hammer. And, when you’re done, you can sit back in the chair and shout to anyone within earshot, “I [insert expletive] BUILT this with MY OWN TWO HANDS!” Instructional video below.

Reclaimed Teak

It is what it is- a reclaimed teak rocker. Yet, without an image next to that title you might think of a more antiquated version that would not work in most modern settings. That’s exactly why this particular rocker from SOBU is impressive- so sleek and simple, with straight lines and a slight curve to give comfort and movement.

Elder Chair, Design by Conran

So, if you peruse the decor magazines, you might have seen the ads for the Design by Conran collection at JC Penny. Have you had a chance to take a look? Yea/nay? Of what I think are the winners, first up is the Elder Chair, and despite its shape reminding me a little of Chairy or some other kid’s show chair, I like the classic proportions and generous size. It looks like the quintessential curl-up-and-read-a-book chair. And, hey, you’ve got to respect the lovely cobalt blue hue, even if it’s a bit too bold for your living area.

Bdoja Chair

Hmm, what’s this? A big ball of yarn? Not quite, though on first glance the assumption is understandable. It’s a chair hand-knitted with cotton cord by a group of women of Mexican-descent in Los Angeles, California. Amaya Gutierrez, the designer, works with this team to produce textiles inspired from her home town in Oaxaca, Mexico. Gutierrez aims for style and durability in all of her products with hopes it will limit further consumption in future years. A worthwhile goal, for sure.

Peg Lounge Chair, Set of 2

The Peg Lounge Chair, you say, haven’t we featured that before? Nope, we’ve featured the Peg Chair, but not the lounge version. Dixon wanted a mix of of traditional pub furniture with a modern edge, and this durable chair was the end result. And, good news, the price listed is for two chairs, so no googly eyes needed. The dark brown finish is intended to deepen with age and was particularly chosen as an antithesis to the recent Scandinavian blond wood furniture craze (which is still acceptable in many interiors, of course).

Park Lounge Chair & Ottoman

Is it perhaps time to focus on an investment piece for your lounge area, specifically, a lounge chair? While originally intended to protect the sitter from cold drafts and trap the heat from a fire, wing chairs are now excellent choices for when you need a little seclusion in a large open space. The Park Lounge Chair is a new take on the classic wing/wing-back chair and features a molded foam body with elastic webbing to ensure comfort. And, of course, the silhouette and proportions are nothing short of elegant.

Curtis Rocker

$299 for a rocking chair? Pretty good price, I’d say. Felted wool cushion (in clover or storm) keeps you comfortable while the frame is made from solid elm. It’s an extremely simple silhouette and has a Scandinavian vibe without looking too IKEA-ish. Anyone know how comfortable it is?

Krusin Lounge Armchair

Sandberg Chair

Hmm, this chair from Room & Board has a quiet sort of beauty, doesn’t it? It has just enough mid century modern flavor to keep it from being boring, yet it’s not something that screams ‘look at me, look at me’ when you first enter the room. It would be an excellent seating choice for a low key area. You have a choice between solid maple, solid cherry, solid walnut or solid maple with ebony stain (do you get that it’s made from solid wood?).
