  • History of America i...

Here's an idea, pick up a book and learn something. Do I sound like one of your grandparents? Good, because that generation will be the only people that know anything about history if you keep playing whatever game on your phone that adds NO MEANING TO YOUR LIFE WHATSOEVER. If you're truly lazy, think of it as a history picture book for your brain. Available from Smithsonian Store for $50.00, or Amazon at $31.93.

If you're bummed that the prices of the incredible tree cross-section prints from Bryan Nash Gill are a bit out of reach (I know I am), there's some consolation in knowing you can at least own a book of his collected works without breaking the bank. Along with the pleasure of thumbing through hundreds of printed works, you'll also be able to read up on his process (if you think it's as easy as cutting a stump and putting ink on it, think again). • Plydesign

PlyDesign: 73 Distinctive DIY Projects in Plywood is a new book by carpenter and author Philip Schmidt. It presents 73 sleek and smart home furnishing projects from common sheet-good materials.  All woodworking skill levels are taken into consideration, and only basic hand and power tools are necessary for every project.  I've had a chance to thumb though the book, and there's a lot to love. Besides the sheer variety (wine holders, credenzas, desks, chairs, organizers, headboards, doghouses, art panels) of projects, I especially love the introduction to the materials and tools. Wood types, carpentry tricks, and best practices are covered, giving the ...

The emphasis is on disseminating unbiased, accurate content to your audience and to do whatever it takes to do so. Beautiful Evidence is one of four books that is handed out at the course, each book is beautiful, with charts and diagrams that had all the design nerds salivating. I recommend all of ...

  • Penguin THREADS Clas...

If you've not seen the new Penguin THREADS Classics, you're in for a treat. Jillian Tamaki hand embroidered the images for these three classics and the results are pretty impressive. I remember seeing these on her blog while they were in progress and now they're finally available to buy just in time for the holidays. Of course, the books are sculptural-embossed with full wraparound images so you can fully appreciate the design, but do take a look at the actual embroidered pieces over at Jillian Tamaki. Books also available at Penguin for $16.00 each.
