I’ve long been a fan of the artist Alyson Fox, so this post is actually past due considering her collaboration with West Elm was in the press clippings months ago. The three rugs (still) available all have silvery, muted color palettes, which seem to fit the mood of this burgeoning year quite well. The patterns provide a subtle sort of interest, more of a quiet-yet-strong suggestion instead of a loud, bright shout. More images and info below.

This pencil holder may tempt those copper thieves lurking around your desk, so best keep implements sharpened and eyes alert. Just how patriotic are you anyways? Enough to have your very own Star Spangled Spatula? I’m slightly surprised that no one has done this before, especially considering just how much patriotic stuff circulates around the July 4th holiday, but I’m also entirely pleased that the idea has been executed so well. Crafted of solid walnut and stainless steel, this spatula is, of course, hand fabricated by the oldest manufacturer of cutlery in the United States: Lamson and Goodnow. Designed by Jacob Riley-Wasserman, a RISD educated designer from Greenwich, New Jersey.

How could you use a basket? How about for storing firewood, laundry, towels, magazines, toys, or your discarded dreams? It’s way too early in the year for that, though, so let’s just stick to tangibles. You can even turn these baskets upside down and use them as a side table or stool. Or crazy hat. Such versatility. If you think you’ve seen this light before, you might be thinking of the Bracket Lamp by Dino Sanchez. There’s similarities in the design, of course, but there’s a few distinct details that perhaps explain the price difference. The Bracket Lamp has a permanent intersecting joint and a more streamlined ceramic fixture, while you can see this wall lamp has a removable stub tenon joint and a traditional solid brass socket. Which one is preferable? That’s completely up to you.

Here’s a different sort of organizer that looks better being used than sitting empty. This ‘island’ will hold all manner of miscellany- phone, keys, wallet, devices- on its compressed cork landscape. There are three staggered dividers, any of which would also hold an iPad in easy reading position. It could live in the kitchen as a recipe reading stand or perhaps on your desk or entryway table as a charging station and catch-all for those important pocket contents.

Sure, there’s the Hola and The Neighbors Have Better Stuff doormat, but if you believe (and are running after) the ‘merican dream, then this is the one for you. You might remember the original Fairisle Rugs by Donna Wilson from a couple of years ago. Don’t worry, they’re still around, they just have a few slight variations in color. These hand-loomed Fairisle rugs feature a chunky knit texture and bright zigzag patterns that will give a room a good punch of pizazz. Made from 100% New Zealand wool.

Picking out decent (i.e. modern) bathroom accessories can be a pain, mostly because there’s just not a lot to choose from in an affordable price range. That’s why these silicone bands and hooks by Josh Owen are nice to see- they’re very affordable and fun in an unstuffy, modern way. Use the bands and hooks for towels, newspapers, scrub brushes, etc. There’s also a toilet paper holder (with a magnetic catch) and two silicone gloved mirrors to complete the collection.

So, without looking at the title, what do you think this is? A weapon? A tool? Perhaps both? It’s a small bottle opener, and one with a hexagonal opening and faceted polygonal silhouette at that. Designed by Bec Brittain (she has worked with Lindsey Adelman, who you’ve heard of by now, and has her own excellent lighting designs). For an extra $5, Ms. Brittain will add a monogram with up to 7 characters, including any combination of letters, numbers, a period, and a heart. Talk about an excellent gift for anyone with an appreciation of geometry- it’s a no brainer.

Yep, they’re salad servers. Not for the more traditional tabletop, of course, but for those of us that prefer the very modern take on just about everything, they tick the right box. There’s something a little science fiction about them, don’t you think? As if they’d look right at home in 2050, if robots haven’t taken over salad serving by then. There’s also a serving set to match, fyi.

If you fall in love with all things angular, here’s a trapezoid tray that will tickle your fancy. While it was made to live on the accompanying Bias Large Ottoman, you might do better by mixing things up a bit and putting it on top of a credenza or dresser to corral smaller items. However, do keep in mind this is one large tray (32.25″ W X 22.5″ D), so it might only fit on a large ottoman if your other case goods tend towards the small size.

Mainly this lamp has resided in the in-case-I-inherit-money inspiration folder, but if you possess great skills in money management, maybe one day you’ll have one for your very own. Designed by Jean Prouvé in collaboration with Charlotte Perriand in 1950, the Potence lamp provides overhead lighting on a pivoting swivel. The single metal rod extends almost 7 feet from the wall, which allows illumination in a 180-degree range without the fuss of taking up floor space.

Also from Ladies & Gentlemen Studio are these simple Cylinder Shakers. No messing around with extraneous design elements here- just the bare-bones cylinder will do, thank you very much, with a cork stopper plug. Right now it looks like they have the Brass and Copper in stock, both with an untreated radial brushed finish that will patina over time.
