Vintage Printed Trays

Forgive me, but I’m a little in love with the Vintage Printed Trays from Robyn Glaser. How could I not be, when we’re talking about updating older wooden trays with a geometric pattern that’s sure to catch the eye as well as all manner of miscellany around the house? Suddenly I’m inspired to round up every wooden tray I find on ebay and try my own hand at adding triangle patterns, though I’m guessing my attempt won’t look near as nice as these.

Typeblocks

However will you teach your children (or nieces and nephews) your favorite typography? With these blocks, of course. A different typeface whose name begins with the letter is carved upon each block (“A” for Avant Garde), with a large upper and lowercase example along with the designer(s), date, and classification. These could also be a thoughtful gift, so keep them in mind the next time a graphic designer friend has a new offspring.

Model Six Stool

Several years ago when we posted this stool, 2007 to be exact, it was simply known as the ‘Covey Stool’ from the designer Jeff Covey. Now its name is the Model Six, and it’s on sale from MoMA Store for $349.95. Chrome-plated steel legs snap together and the walnut seat can be adjusted from 24″-28″ height, making this strong stool an excellent flat-packed option for your bar or counter area.

V.Stand

This small V.Stand is not for your backside, but for any little thing weighing up to 20 pounds. That shouldn’t be a surprise once you find out that it’s made from lightweight corrugated plastic and weighs less than a pound. Maybe set a drink upon its surface, or a small stack of books… or a cat? You name it, as long as it’s not too terribly heavy, this stand will keep it off the floor and within reaching distance of your favorite chair/bed/beanbag/chaise lounge. You could even stack a few for an art-ish sculptural column in that lonely corner of your home. Handmade in designer Jae Won Choor’s (“J1”) L.A. furniture studio.

Tokyo 2 and New York 1 Bitmap Blanket

Gah! I know that Cristian Zuzunaga’s Digital Sunrise Blanket might have been a little too much color and pattern, but don’t let that dissuade you from considering some of the other knitted blankets in the collection. Tokyo 2 Bitmap Blanket is the one above, and New York 1 Bitmap Blanket the one below. Both are a little less crazy with their limited color palette, yet they’ll still prove that you can be brave when it comes to textiles. Perhaps one might fit the bill for a lightweight summer blanket for your bed? You may also purchase these blankets (amongst other items) directly from Zuzunaga’s Design Studio (€240 ex.VAT), but be advised you’ll need to pay for shipping/customs.

Oon Power Outlet

Power outlets are ugly. We do all manner of things to hide or hang them out of sight, because a mess of cords isn’t pretty, no matter what you do to them. However, maybe, just maybe, this Oon Power Outlet might change our minds, as it divides each electrical socket into individual blocks, allowing the unit to flex and rotate. A soft color scheme and cloth cord add a familiar warmth, making this outlet less of what you might find in a cubicle and more of what you’d find in a small, elegant toy box.

    Amuze Salad Set, Stripe

Yep, they’re salad servers. Not for the more traditional tabletop, of course, but for those of us that prefer the very modern take on just about everything, they tick the right box. There’s something a little science fiction about them, don’t you think? As if they’d look right at home in 2060, if robots haven’t taken over salad serving by then. There’s also a serving set ($33.90) to match, fyi.

    Modern Mailboxes

Someone has mentioned to me that we need a new mailbox, and given that my job is to find modern, well-designed things, I feel that I cannot ignore such a plea. So, what you see below are all the items I see as acceptable options. However, I don’t necessarily feel that there’s a clear front runner. Perhaps we should have a vote on some sort of social media outlet? Hmm, stay tuned. If you are also in the market for a mailbox, and know of another (or better) option, please let me know.

    Graded Shelving Kit

Now, here’s an interesting take on a shelving kit. Notice how the legs thicken towards the bottom? That enables “precisely machined plastic collars” on each of the five shelves to fit at certain spots, thus creating shelving space. Those legs are produced in collaborations with RJH Custom Pool Cues, as those of you who play pool might have noticed. No other hardware is needed, just slide the shelves over the four legs.

    Walnut Keyboard Tray

What’s so great about a keyboard tray? Well, nothing if you’re a strict minimalist and don’t have a bunch of little things rattling around on your desk. However, if you’re like the rest of us, you could use a small spot to stash a few pens, paperclips, extra batteries and other little miscellany that has no home. A slim profile keeps the ergonomics of Apple’s keyboard and the natural black walnut will look good with almost anything.

    Magnote

Perhaps you have a favorite notebook, but I bet you a dollar bill that it doesn’t have magnets as a main component. Huh? Yep, magnets. The Magnote, currently a Kickstarter project, has neodymium magnets embedded in its spine, allowing you to easily carry several at once while keeping your ideas or projects separate. It lays completely flat when opened, so you can take advantage of the full page surface. Carry just as many as you need in an orderly stack and separate them whenever needed. At the size of an iPad, each notebook stacks easily alongside the others on a shelf, and you can choose between a blank, gridded, ruled, or a daily or monthly minimal planner.

    Metamorphic Rock Bookend

You may not see the allure in stone shards cast in cement only to then be shoved upon a shelf to hold books in place, but these Metamorphic Rock Bookends now occupy the number one spot on my wish list, and will likely stay there until the holiday season. Three flat, perpendicular sides enable the bookend function while one decorative, textured side provides sculptural interest. Each unique set is signed and dated by Chen Chen and Kai Williams.

    Ball LED Indoor Outdoor Lamp

How about adding a cordless, rechargeable, waterproof, and energy efficient light that can live indoors or out to your abode? The Ball LED Lamp is pretty perfect for making your outdoor evening soirees a little more romantic. It’s entirely portable, and will withstand all sorts of bad weather. You can even throw it in the pool for a floating lighting display (I’m sure party planners already know this) should you want a more impressive atmosphere. Get the Pebble Remote to control color options and/or several lamps up to a distance of over 66 feet.
