Kartio Glassware

Glassware may not be the most exciting thing to you, but, hey, you use it every single day for your juice/water/spirits. Why not upgrade to something more visually appealing than the mix-matched set you’ve had since college? You can’t go wrong with Iittala’s Kartio Collection, as the series dates back to 1958, when Kaj Franck first created their simple, balanced design. There’s quite a few subtle colors (you’ll find something to suit your preferences) and they’re durable enough for everyday use.

Winkel 127 Table Lamp

The Winkel 127 Table Lamp boasts quite a few features for a smaller task lamp. First off, it’s made of solid fiberglass reinforced biopolyamide, which is made from “over 60 per cent renewable material derived from castor oil.” That makes it recyclable at the end of its lifespan. However, with a very energy-efficient multi-chip LED light system, that won’t be anytime soon.

Optimal light distribution, micro gas springs (that means “good movement patterns”), glare protection, a dimmer… what more would you want in a desk lamp? Oh, it also has a built-in timer that automatically turns off the lamp after five hours, so it has a not-so-subtle way of telling you it’s time for bed. Yes, please.

King/Queen Linen Duvet Set

Hmm, a good quality linen duvet set for $129 sounds extremely unlikely, but maybe that’s because we’re used to other brands (like Matteo) having price tags twice as much*. Is price a true indicator of quality? Or should we take a chance on one heck of a deal? This is exactly the kind of product that needs customer reviews, so that those of us biting our fingernails wondering about the quality will know what to expect**.

Cold Picnic Rugs

You’ve seen Cold Picnic’s Private Parts, and now here’s a glimpse at their other larger area rugs. These three have a pale backdrop, with abstract shapes and bits of color to jazz things up. There’s the Cenotes Rug, with a softer lime green and peach setting the tone. Painted Caves plays with purple, beige and red, and Talking Rocks has three floating jagged rock shapes in yellow, purple/blue and black. All are available in three sizes.

Unfolding Apartment by Normal Projects

This very large and very blue cabinetry unit hides all sorts of functions in the Unfolding House by Normal Projects (Michael Chen and Kari Anderson). The 450 square foot space needed to cram in a lot of different areas- cooking, storage, sleeping, and working- while keeping the small space open and airy. What to do? Build a big cabinet, of course, that holds plenty of storage, a murphy bed and office. See more of the project over at Dwell or at Michael Chen Architecture; there’s a video as well. I particularly like the cabinets without the aluminum pieces (which you see on the older video and on the architect’s site).

Binary Titanium Key Carabiner

If you carry your keys around on a carabiner, you might want to trade it in for this upgrade. It features a ‘safety gate’ that keeps your keys locked in place. No matter how many times you clip it on and off, this second latch keeps key rings safely attached, yet still easily retrievable should you need to remove them. And, as an extra little feature, the titanium body also functions as a bottle opener.

Knot Pillows by Electric Feathers

This isn’t your normal pillow, and that is exactly its charm. Instead of one semi-fluffy square (so boring!), the Knot Pillow is one long tube of cotton fluffiness sewn in silk pongee fabric, hand painted and tied up in a large knot. Fun, right? And especially handy in a pillow fight, I’d think.

Vino Cork Stopper

Why does your wine bottle need a hat? To be clear, it’s a stopper, not a hat, but you can call it what you wish. In the event you are unable to finish a whole bottle of wine in one sitting, this Vino Cork Stopper will save it for later enjoyment. And, it has a trick up its sleeve- turn it over and it may be used as a bottle holder. Two in one!

Indigo Splatter Ceramics by Chris Earl

An indigo splattered coffee cup is just what your tea or coffee would like to live in, however briefly, before you sip/gulp/slurp it down. Los Angeles-based designer Chris Earl is the man with the blue paint brush, and he splatters indigo glaze across his hand-thrown tumblers, coffee cups and bowls with equal enthusiasm.

‘Diamond’ Poufs

Q: What do you get when you combine Studio Bertjan Pot with a company that has the name of a evil sorcerer a long history in Persian carpets? That’s not a joke, by the way, it’s just a way to solicit an exclamation of admiration of said studio. A: You get a wonderfully mixed triangular kilim pattern, in all sorts of “spicy colours” on rugs and poufs. Note: gird your loins, for the prices aren’t cheap.

Cobra Wall Sconce

The Cobra Wall Sconce might just be the coolest under-the-radar sconce ever. Why? Well, look at the subtle curve of the shade, for starters, and its classic oval shape. Did you know the Swedish architect and designer Greta Grossman designed it way back in 1950? It still looks thoroughly modern, in the quiet way of most mid-century Swedish modernism. The shade may be tilted 90 degrees and rotated a full 360 degrees, allowing you to concentrate light right where you wish.
