Austin Maynard Architects: Mills House

Yes, the Mills House by Austin Maynard Architects does have a cool metal mesh on its rear facade to shade it from the sun. It also has the same mesh running throughout the home, most notably on the stairs and on the floor of the upper level. That’s a neat material to use, as it lets light filter through and the air circulate.

Table Tiles Optic

Add a few stripes and you’ve got a 3D illusion. That’s sure to cause endless rearranging to get different patterns when these coasters are placed together for a table trivet. Two functions in one, plus a pattern play = fun! If you’d rather less stripes and more color blocks, then there’s the plain(er) Table Tiles for your consideration.

Push Coffee Maker by Muuto

Mette Duedahl’s Push Coffee Maker is made of a warm grey stoneware in a rounded shape, which seems a little friendlier to touch and hold than the normal glass carafes used in most households. You’ll find the plunger is made of steel, so no worries as to the durability of daily use, and the lid is clear plastic, allowing you to check the progress of the brew. Duedahl’s Coffee Mugs look to be excellent companions to the Push Coffee Maker; I’ll keep my eyes out for a North American retailer.

Mikol Marble Notebook

The title doesn’t lie; it is, in fact, a marble notebook. Real marble covers the front and back covers, and, thanks to laminated webbing and recycled corrugate, the marble will flex to avoid breakage*. It opens perfectly flat so that you can scrawl your brilliant thoughts and/or drawings comfortably.

Sweeper and Funnel

It’s just a regular ol’ sweeper and dustpan, so what’s the big deal? Well, the dustpan has a hollow handle, which allows you to store the sweeper perfectly inside, and, perhaps more importantly, also enables you to cleanly deposit dust & debris into the trash with ease. Smart!

H Blocks

You need a break. Pick up some of these H Blocks and play around with architectural towers and landscapes, or just mess around with different colors making patterns. And, yes, these would be good for kids to play with, but they’ll be just as good for your brain (most likely) and some of your coworkers too (if you want to share). Available in black, white, and natural.

Giant Edison Kit

You might be yawning right now, seeing another Edison Bulb on your screen, but this one is super-sized. It’s 12.5″ in diameter. Go ahead, pick up a ruler or measuring tape to remind yourself just how large a bulb would be in that dimension. Perhaps hang one above a smaller dining table, or go for a group of three or five to make a huge statement.

Frame Trays, Set of 3

A set of three trays with soft, muted colors might just be what you need to get those odds and ends organized. Kitchen, entryway, bedroom, or office, the trays will be a landing pad for all sorts of miscellany, hopefully leaving other surfaces free of clutter. Keep them nested as a collection, or spread them out when needed.

Bookniture

Furniture in a book? Yes, please. This was a Kickstarter project, but now you can purchase directly from Bookniture or from MoMA Store to have your very own book that transforms into a stool/ottoman/table, quick as can be. Maybe it’s perfect for your very small space (and budget), or maybe you just appreciate the fact that it’d be easy to take out to your patio or to the park. Either way, it’s easy to store away when not in use, as you can slide it in amongst your books on a bookshelf.

Concrete Home of Pedro Reyes and Carla Fernández

Quite a lot of concrete, isn’t it? The home of Pedro Reyes and Carla Fernández is close to feeling like a castle, with large open spaces and contrasting close corridors. The library is particularly impressive, with its two levels taking up one entire wall of the generously sized living area. See more of the space over at Freunde von Freunden.

Corknet Ping Pong Set

A ping pong game after dinner? Sure, why not, just grab that trivet and we’re good to go. Huh? The Corknet Set is such a smart idea: two cork pieces line up side by side to create a net (regulation height, by the way) on any table. They are freestanding- just set them up in the middle of a table and play. And, when you’re not showing your opponent who’s boss, the two cork pieces stack together to form a trivet for your large dishes. The ball nests inside. Fun!

Metalwork Nightstand

This Metalwork Nightstand has been on the radar lately, and what a pleasant surprise to find the price in a very affordable range. The hot rolled steel option is $249, the white lacquer $199, and, if you don’t mind a little celadon, you can get it at $139. Celadon? Our new favorite color, I think.
