This chair isn’t new, in fact, it’s been around for a couple of years, but for some reason we’ve missed featuring it. Designed by Shane Schneck for Hay, this chair has a cantilever design that allows for easy stacking. Perhaps more impressively, the lack of two front legs means the seat of the chair can be suspended on a table for easy floor cleaning (see image at designboom). A cross lamination layering pattern gives the Ru Chair “exceptional” strength.

These two ladies have quite the modern/minimal look. Designed by architect David Salmela, the Taavi and Gladys are two great seating options for outdoor areas, especially as both are made from recycled materials (Taavi contains 256 milk jugs and Gladys contains 328). Worried about the comfort level? Remember, sometimes seating is more about the angle and slope of recline than the amount of cushion.

If you happen to be casually searching for a minimal console table, you might find a few that look almost identical. Case in point: these two consoles. Both have stainless steel bases with a walnut veneer top and both have similar dimensions; the only big difference is one has a price tag of $650 and the other $450. Can you spot which one’s which?

Do you need some sculptural storage? Of course you do, who doesn’t? Debra Folz brings us these Askew shelves, which are, you guessed it, set askew to the wall. The drawer fronts are nicely crafted as to be almost invisible, and while it would cost quite a few pretty pennies to install several on a wall, it would look fantastic. Maybe settling for just one in an entry way (or as a beside table?) is a nice compromise.

This Poet Stool by Misewell might be a tad expensive, but goodness, once you take a look at the construction, you begin to understand why. The three legs are connected to the seat by mortise and tenon joints, which, if you’re not aware, is both a simple and strong joint that needs to be cut exactly to specification. Steel connects each leg, further strengthening the structure and providing a perfect ledge to rest your feet. Handmade and assembled in Milwaukee.

This desk brings to mind the Primary Desk by Nathan Yong, doesn’t it? There’s a vast difference in pricing/materials/craftsmanship, of course, but they share the same idea of a small upper storage shelf. This desk by designer Jannis Ellenberger has hook-on storage: one white powdercoated shelf and lidded drawer that hang at any point along the ledge. (And, at $399 you definitely will save some serious cash compared to the Primary Desk at $1,800.)

The Paulistano chair, now available in cotton canvas. Are you excited? Even a little bit? Because you should be. It’s rare that outdoor furniture is described as exciting, mostly because it’s meant for outdoors and not many of us have the time and money to spend on amazing furnishings that will only get rained on, but such is the state of things. Now, the Paulistano’s new canvas cover means it can go outside and be its comfortable pleasing-to-the-eye self, thus saving us from the unfortunate cry of ‘there’s no decent outdoor furniture!’ The Paulistano is a 1957 classic originally designed for the Paulistano Athletic Club in São Paulo, Brazil.

Random fabric remnants might not fit in perfectly with your color scheme, but nevertheless, this little pouf should get a ribbon for recycling fabric. Flat packable shelving usually brings to mind heavy boxes and a fair amount of cursing during assembly. In contrast, this low shelving system by Calen Knauf has no heavy wood composite pieces and looks pretty simple to put together. Well, how nice is it to see some marble topped tables not costing an absolute fortune? There’s solid walnut legs too, with brass details and a black steel frame. Both coffee and side are a pretty good alternative to some of the pricier marble tables you see in some showrooms, and the design has a very slight mid century vibe (a definite plus). These petite consoles by Pelle sure pack in the storage options despite their small size- each piece has a shelf plus drawer options to keep items like keys, gloves, and wallets close at hand. Yes, they are a little pricey, and lean towards the more bespoke budget range, but it sure is nice to see something different in the console category, even if it is a little more whimsical than the usual straight edged modern that some of us prefer.
