Copenhague Desk

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are at it again with the Copenhague Desk, created for the new buildings at the University of Copenhagen. While originally designed for dorm rooms, classrooms, and common spaces, I think most of us will agree that the desk and chair look a heck of a lot nicer than anything we sat on at any stage of our schooling, and deserve to be somewhere better, maybe in our home office or spare room perhaps? The Copenhague Desk has trestle style legs with a backrest for leaning books, notepads, or tablets and is made from lacquered Oak.

Two Tops Series by Marcel Wanders

While not new, the Two Tops Table by Marcel Wanders recently found pride of place on my list of dining table options for a young family. The ‘Two Tops’ has an option to use laptops or coloring books at each end, thanks to a hinged end section that flips up to access the space. To hide the workspace, flip down the lid and you have a clean tabletop for dinnertime, no clearing necessary. It’s a clever solution to make the dining area tidy each evening and allows a kitchen or dining room to serve several functions.

Bertoia Side Chair

Bertoia chairs in a colorful mix certainly tempts one to go bold with outdoor furnishings this spring/summer, and, in case you need further convincing, here’s a reminder that today’s the last day of the Knoll® Outdoor Sale (15% off). Usually the Bertoia Side Chair with cushion is just around the $700 (plus shipping) price point, but with the sale, it’s just under the $600 mark. Still not cheap, but a chair plus $100 in your pocket wouldn’t hurt, would it?

Buoy Multifunctional Chair

Need a chair that keeps you moving? There’s the ErgoErgo, which we’ve posted before, and now there’s also the Buoy. The Buoy Multifuncitonal Chair has a rounded bottom that encourages you to move often- swivel, tilt, and turn- and also allows for proper posture wherever you’re working. A gas lift mechanism within the built-in handle enables height adjustment (excellent for workspaces that accommodate several people) and brighter base colors are available as well.

Idle vs. Skiff

Here’s an interesting match up in the world of modern/minimal sun loungers: one of these is $899 and the other is $299. If you’re a stickler for details, you’ll probably notice a few subtle design clues to help you assess which one has the higher/lower price tag, and, as usual, the call on which lounger you like best is completely up to your discerning/nondiscerning eye (and wallet).

TON Chair 77

$99! No, that’s not an April Fool’s joke, that is the actual price of this chair originally designed by the legendary Czech furniture maker Michael Thonet. Recognize the name? Thonet is known for his iconic bentwood chairs in 1861, and TON updates the original design with a slim, rectangular backrest and a few gentle curves that show off the subtle flair possible with steam-bending techniques.

My Writing Desk

Is this a smart idea or what? My Writing Desk by Inesa Malafej has an outer edge or ‘wings’ to catch papers and books, not to mention all the other small desk debris that wants to jump off the surface of your worktop. The higher edges also help make the desk feel like a mini-room or microclimate, enveloping you amongst your precious things so you can concentrate and be brilliant at whatever task you attempt. Tractor vs. Metro Barstool

Hmm, these two stools are very similar, aren’t they? Is one flattering the other by imitating certain aspects of design or is it just a case of blatant copying? One was designed in 2000/2001 and the other showed up this recently this year. One costs four times what the other does, for good reason if the descriptions are anything to go by. I’ll leave it to you to decide if it’s an ‘inspired by’ situation or a flat out copy-cat.

Criss Knit Orange Pod

Spring is… springing, and if we shall take hints from all the spring newsletters hitting our inbox, it’s time to think about sprucing up our outdoor area. Don’t worry, there’ll be more planters and tools and furniture featured soon, but for now, let’s talk about this Criss Knit Pod/Pouf. It’s outdoor-friendly as it’s made from poly-foam knit (it wipes clean) and a dense poly fill makes it suitable for an extra seat, ottoman, or table- just add a big tray on top. It is very orange, but maybe this year we’ll be a little bit more brave when it comes to color… agreed?

Risom Desk

Just a reminder that some of the spring sales are ending tomorrow. And, if you have some money to spend, you can save some money by spending a little time perusing the items on sale… such as the petite Risom Desk, originally designed in 1968 by Jens Risom for his home in New Canaan, Connecticut. Meant more for use as a writing surface than a computer station, it suits a simpler lifestyle with just one drawer with a removable walnut tray for desk supplies. Perhaps the pared down storage will encourage you to tailor your office supplies down to only the most necessary?
