Bed Side Tables

Nightstands, bed side tables, whatever you call them, they’re somewhat necessary for a good night’s sleep. So says anyone that has knocked over a glass of water, groped blindly for an alarm clock or phone, or lost their device/watch/jewelry/what-have-you under the bed or in the covers. Here’s a few that are easy on the eyes, have at least a little storage space, and are relatively easy on the wallet… except for a couple, which qualify as expensive as they have a comma in the price tag.

Cubist Shelf Small and Large

Don’t get too attached to the way these shelves are displayed; turn them around any ol’ way to get just the right look. Both the vessel and shelf tray are removable, so you’ve got quite a few options when it comes to which way is up. Use the cup for a planter (it has a plastic insert) or as a pencil holder. Place one on a desk or hang several on the wall with the provided brackets.

Casey Dzierlenga Bar and Counter Stools

These may not be around forever at this price, and that’s more the reason to seriously consider them as an option for your bar or counter space. Casey Dzierlenga has quite a collection of heirloom pieces, and though these stools may not have the same pedigree as her locally sourced materials, they still possess the same thoughtful styling and classic design. Plus, we should all support stores that work with designers to create affordable options of their designs- soooo much better to see than the evil alternative of rip-offs. And, if you like these stools, do be sure to take a look at Dzierlenga’s Little Potat Thinking Stool– it’s a thing of beauty.

Mesh Coffee Table

Sometimes you want a piece of furniture that strikes just the right note of quiet edginess. Restrained, yet still a little odd in some way. I’d say this Mesh Coffee Table by Bowles & Bowles hits just that note with its airy, steel wire mesh base. Paired with a smoked glass top that reflects light, it’s a great choice for smaller sitting areas, as it will help a room feel larger than it is.

Arco Desk by Design House Stockholm

You’d best steer clear of the Arco Desk if you’re allergic to clutter. However, if you like to arrange things just so and have everything within view, then take a long look at this oak trestle desk with tempered glass top. The drawer is completely visible, so there’s no hiding any secretive snacks or less than desirable belongings. The drawer also opens from either side, so feel free to float it away from the walls.

Cherner® Task Chair

Do you know the contentious history of the Cherner Chair? I didn’t, but I’m glad Cherner’s sons revived their father’s designs, and created the variation you see above. Task chairs often look terrible, especially with today’s advanced ergonomic technology, and the simplicity of such classic lines when applied to an office/desk area seating option is enormously appealing. Now that we’ve discussed its aesthetic appeal, someone just needs to test out how comfortable this chair may or may not be after a few hours’ work.

Revolver Stool

There’s no telling how much fun you’ll have with a spinning barstool, but enjoyment aside, there’s a practicality in having a stool rotate a complete 360 degrees: ease of use. The Revolver Stool designed by Leon Ransmeier for HAY has circular seat, upper leg portion and footrest that spins completely around, giving you a comfortable and sensible seating option that fits in nicely with many a modern interior.

Brooklyn Desk

The Brooklyn Desk has clever little storage boxes that slip over its edge, which means the boxes can be arranged to suit the user’s preferences exactly. Now, do keep in mind it is a smaller worktop, so it’s ideal for smaller people (and smaller spaces), and would be especially suitable for a growing child, as the desk height is adjustable (up to adult height). Perhaps with enough interest, Oeuf will make a larger version? One can hope.

Bookniture

Furniture in a book? Yes, please. This was a Kickstarter project, but now you can purchase directly from Bookniture or from MoMA Store to have your very own book that transforms into a stool/ottoman/table, quick as can be. Maybe it’s perfect for your very small space (and budget), or maybe you just appreciate the fact that it’d be easy to take out to your patio or to the park. Either way, it’s easy to store away when not in use, as you can slide it in amongst your books on a bookshelf.

Metalwork Nightstand

This Metalwork Nightstand has been on the radar lately, and what a pleasant surprise to find the price in a very affordable range. The hot rolled steel option is $249, the white lacquer $199, and, if you don’t mind a little celadon, you can get it at $139. Celadon? Our new favorite color, I think.

‘Diamond’ Poufs

Q: What do you get when you combine Studio Bertjan Pot with a company that has the name of a evil sorcerer a long history in Persian carpets? That’s not a joke, by the way, it’s just a way to solicit an exclamation of admiration of said studio. A: You get a wonderfully mixed triangular kilim pattern, in all sorts of “spicy colours” on rugs and poufs. Note: gird your loins, for the prices aren’t cheap.

‘Svelto’ Round Stacking Stool

At first glance, you could be forgiven for letting your eyes slide right over this stool on to other more exciting things. However, on second sight, if you don’t notice the lovely detail of the slightly concave top, and then, of course, the leg shape and joinery underneath (you do have to turn furniture over occasionally, it’s the nature of appreciating design), then I’ll have to give you a verbal slap for not paying attention. The Svelto Stool stacks for storage, with each stool rotating slightly from the one below.

Marmeria Modular Bookcase

See this small, sculptural piece of marble? It sits at just under 16″ high, and could function as a shorter side table alongside your favorite chair. However, Italian architecture firm Studio Archea intended this piece, along with its three other siblings, to compose a larger, modular bookcase.

Sidera Chair

Do you see a little Eames influence in this side chair? Maybe it’s the wood dowel legs, or maybe it’s the molded plastic seat and back. In any case, the expanding crosshatch pattern places it firmly in today’s world rather than amongst the mid century modern classics. You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised at the price tag: $250. Not too bad for a stylish side or desk chair, right?

Alle Coffee Tables

Whaaaat the what. There’s a tempting sale over at Hem; the Alle Coffee Tables are so very affordable at the moment you’d be silly not to grab a couple. Don’t be too afraid of the red color, by the way, as it would provide a nice color contrast to an otherwise neutral interior. If that still makes you nervous, there’s black, ivory, pale oak, light blue, gray, eggplant, and walnut- all excellent choices.
