ICFF Designer Spotlight: Richard Shed

The British designer Richard Shed has an inspiring collection of work that includes conceptual ideas made real, that result in some designs that would be functional, beautiful pieces in your home. The breath-taking beauty of the “Discovery” pieces coupled with the quirky yet equally well-constructed pieces inspired by the antics of Keith Moon make Richard Shed a forerunner in upcoming design today. Several of his pieces are available from Thorsten Van Elton in the UK, but hopefully more of his pieces will be available stateside. If you are interested in some of his pieces, perhaps you could email your favorite local retailer and ask them to carry them. Or you could email him directly via his website.

Charles Brill Wilsonart Nest Chair

Cork Tray

This sustainably made tray is made of Poplar (fast growing), cork, and a low VOC water based polyurethane. Great for your laptop or eating in front of the TV like a lazy American. Just kidding.

Cupple Coffee Mug & Holder

I have mixed feelings about the way the handle of this cup is shaped, but I do feel that the storage solution is quite smart. The mug’s handle interlocks with the rubber wall mounted holder, making it easy to grab or deposit.

ICFF: Matthew Kroeker

I do have to say that these two chairs are quite intriguing…

“Two chairs mate neatly along a broken line of shifted wood slats. Hinting at a metaphor for a broken or mended relationship, the chairs join to form a bench. Two can sit close or separate. The chairs are made from plantation grown teak hardwood, cast aluminum and aluminum tubing. They are suitable for outdoor and indoor use.”

The Oldstock candleholders are pretty eye-catching as well, and the fact that they are made from recycled glass bottles doesn’t hurt one bit.

GATOR, digital desk clock

Topo Table

So, all this week you’ll be seeing bits and pieces of things we saw at the ICFF that we thought were worth mentioning, and I think it fitting that this table is among the first of the posts. I do believe it might be my favorite thing, or at least among the top five. Small plastic inserts drop into the table to form little landscapes that are interchangable. Plants are shown, but think of all the other possibilities…

Paulistano Armchair

Bound to become iconic (in my humble opinion), this chair is an investment that will be worth every penny as years pass.

“Details that make a difference are the signature of this architect. The frame, a continuous 17-foot piece of solid stainless steel, is shaped under 200 lbs of hydraulic pressure over 24 hours. The result is a sinuous structure welded in a single spot and wrapped in almost an entire hide of leather that will gain depth and luster as it ages. Exceptionally comfortable, the Paulistano flexes slightly and can be adjusted for upright or relaxed sitting positions by shifting the leather sling up or down the frame.”

Cloud Shelving System

It seems to me that we would’ve posted this before, though I can’t seem to find any record of it. And if we have, I think it’s well worth another entry. It’s such a great design and so terribly great-looking as to inspire need (as in, I need that piece of furniture). And, of course, it’s by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for Cappellini (2004).

“the cloud shelving system…has garnered much attention due to its original form and its use of innovative materials. cloud allows for the repetition of elements which can be stacked and aligned to create large bookshelves or room dividers. in theory, there is no limit to the size of a structure other than the size of the space containing it. cloud is made of a high-density polystyrene and is available in 4 colors: white, light green, dark green or red.”

Persona Business Card Holder

Here’s another great dual-compartment business card holder.

“Just run your thumb along the front to present your business card. Place received cards at the back to safely file and easily recall your new acquaintances. If you’re doing business in Japan, don’t forget to accept a card with both hands, to study it carefully and to leave it lying on the table until the end of the meeting. Persona is made of a single folded stainless steel plate and holds approximately 8 business cards on each side.”

Material: 18/8 Matte Stainless Steel
Size: 3.75″ x 2.25″ / 9,5 cm x 5,5 cm

Thanks Patrick!

E8 WATCH

“The E8 is a watch that revolutionizes the way we read time. It has a unique display mode. Time. It is fleeting, yet it can take on an entire new dimension that can be read in virtually any light. According to designer, Brieuc du Roscoät, the E8 ‘symbolizes a different approach to time, built around a new identity, new landmarks. E8 takes us with its simplicity to the reality of a universal graphical era.’ Alarm – EL Display.”

Love Chair

I know most people are crazy for Mr. Jonathan Adler, but somehow I didn’t get hit with the adoration bat when it comes to most of Mr. Adler’s designs. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s all good stuff, it’s just that nothing has struck me as an ‘i have to have it’ type thing. And then I see this, and somehow I finally got hit in the ‘noggin, if that’s the saying. This chair is so “sweet” it’s cute, and while I appreciate it for the irony (maybe?), I’m sure loads of people love it just ’cause it’s Adler.

ARBORESCENCE VINYL WALL GRAPHICS

These tree wall graphics can add a lightness and visual interest where previously there was nothing.

“The objective of Domestic is to create collections of articles devised by designers, graphic artists or artists whose common denominator is to offer a means for the end user to freely participate. With Vynil, an alternative to wallpaper, the principle of the collection is simple: literally hand over to users who are invited to transform their interior into an area for expression and design their own decor. Thanks to Vynil, the wall space becomes the playing field for composition and into which one can put a lot of effort and invention. Beyond the practical interest it represents (no longer any need for glue or a pasting table); the Vynil collection enables new thought to be given to the place and role of the ornamental pattern in our interiors. ARBORESCENCE DESIGNED BY FRANCOISE AZAMBOURG: Franรงois Azambourg is interested in means of production and new practices. His work is qualified by a rational and meaning research about materials. His approach is voluntarily experimental. “
