Sawbuck Chair

This Sawbuck chair displays typical Wegner style. A surefire classic.

“A sculpture you’ll enjoy every day, the Sawbuck chair emboides the best of Danish Modern design- in fact, an early version of this chair sits in The Danish Arts and Industry Museum. Designed by Hans Wegner in 1951, this special edition in created exclusively for [Room & Board] by Carl Hansen & Son, the original manufacturer of the Sawbuck. Handcrafted from walnut and oak, each chair is made according to Wegner’s designs and specifications.”

Steelwood Chair, Magis

This chair sounds like it’s been through the wringer a few times, but the end result does not disappoint. It’s easy to appreciate how the curving steel plate and solid beech provide a rich contrast- they give detail to an otherwise simple form.

“The Steelwood chair is a radical assemblage of two traditional materials: steel and wood. Unlike its plastic siblings, it is aimed to become more delicate through time, acquiring a patina over uses and years. The steel forming process required deep technological research due to the unique and intricate form. It led to the final process which requires almost ten successive stamping stages in order to get the right curvature.”

Stumped Stool/Side Table

The surface of these are smooth enough to look slightly like a cartoon version of a stump, which I find entirely amusing. A few of these next to a serious sofa could tone it down a bit and keep things humorous.

“These stools have a soft curve for comfort and the table’s flat surface holds a drink. At 17″ high and 21″ diameter, they’re happiest in multiples (like a forest)…”

Bernard Sofa, Chair

I don’t know why it seems that the simpler modern sofas are more expensive, but I think something like this would be worth the price.

“BERNARD has a soft, generous seat depth and the gently reclining back provides a luxurious sit. Manufactured using a solid beech frame and upholstered with dacron wrapped foam cushions, the range comes in 2 and 3 seaters, a corner unit and chair. Available with either a stainless frame or a straight leg version. The chair is also available as a more compact version with a powder coated swivel base.”

Icon Stool by Matthias Demacker

“There is no mistaking the minimalist look of Matthias Demacker’s Icon stool! The piece is made from two sheets of aluminum, bent and welded into two dramatic, triangular shapes. The segments meet at their most precarious points, but the stool remains perfectly balanced! A fantastic example of formal reductionism!

Stackable and compact, the Icon is available in red, black, white or aluminum with a removable, black cushion.”

It’s refreshing to know there is decent audio shelving solutions out there (even if it’s more than some of us want to pay).

Origami Side Table

This is my favorite find of the week, if not a contender for this month. It has an affordable price tag as well as being designed in a smart way (for the reasons listed below), and- probably most importantly- it looks really sharp.

“Composed of two laser-cut and slotted sheets of steel, the Origami tables ship flat and require no tools or hardware to assemble. One sheet is the negative of the other, which eliminates waste during production and gives the tables a balanced, yet dynamic, form. The petal-like surfaces are sturdy and spacious, making a practical and sculptural side table, night stand or plant stand.”

Moebius Table

I have seen this before, but it wasn’t until I saw it in a room setting did I fully appreciate the detail of the base. It’s really a beautiful table, and even though it has a higher price tag it might be a good time to take the plunge and add something to your collection that you’ll most likely appreciate for years and years.

“The beautifully grained base flares and narrows in six arcs, creating a look of poised animation. Each upright is accented by brass hardware and is the balance point for the 3/4″ glass top. Reminiscent of the iconic Noguchi Table, the Moebius is a classic in its own right, blending rhythmic form with straightforward function.”

Taburet M Stacking Stool

‘The Taburet M Stacking Stool is almost pure abstraction, making minimum impact on space and redefining “seat” in the simplest sense. Yet, the stool is quite substantial, offering a low, comfortable seat suited to a retail setting, showroom, gallery or reception area.’

Molded beech or cherry wood; lacquered finish.

Kara Lounge Chair

This lounge chair doesn’t have a pedigree, but the legs are certainly reminiscent of Paul Kjaerholm’s Springing Chair. If you don’t mind owning a referential piece, then this chair may not be a bad choice.

Couture Chair by Philippe Starck

The tweed pattern print seems to emphasize some mid century inspiration, don’t you think?

“Finally: another chair by Philippe….. but wait there is a twist: a pattern on the shell with a new printing on plastic technique. He chose a tweed pattern with pastel colored threads.”

In the Round ‘Stitch’ Chair

Remarkable in its upholstery technique, this chair would be sure to garner some attention from your guests.

‘This chair was named after the technique of knitting sleeves or socks “In the Round.” In order to upholster a chair completely with only one knit sleeve, the tubular steel frame had to be formed in one continuous line that closes in a loop. Careful attention was paid to the seat so that enough surface area would ensure comfort. Thirty feet, or nine meters, of sleeve is required to upholster one chair.’

Frank Gehry Sofa

On my commute to work everyday I get to see the gorgeous LA Philharmonic building designed by Frank Gehry. If I had a back yard fabulous enough to justify it, I would get the Frank Gehry Sofa. It’s currently on sale and almost sold out at DWR.

Cork Ottoman

If the
Cork Table and Stool by Jasper Morrison seem a little too expensive, here’s an alternative. Personally, I’d save up another $100 and get the Morrison ones, but maybe the proportions or the price tag of this one are friendlier for some of you…
