Kingstown Barstool

The Kingstown Barstools from Studio Dunn are just as sleek as they were when they first hit the market a few years ago. Similar to the popular Conventry Stool, the barstools combine traditional handmade joinery with contemporary manufacturing methods to create a seating option with incredibly graceful lines. And, as a tip of the hat to their eco-friendly credentials, it’s worth mentioning that Studio Dunn works with high-quality domestic timber from sustainable forests.

MG501 Cuba Chair

Say ‘folding chair’ and you immediately think of the cheap aluminum sort found at various community gatherings. Lucky you, just because your home is spatially challenged doesn’t mean you have to resort to those ugly things; take a look at the MG501 Cuba Chair by Morten Gottler. It’s light and flexible, and can easily fold up for storage- in a closet or hung on a wall. Natural cotton webbing straps provide support and comfort.

Woodieful Chair

Here’s a stool that doubles as a table/nightstand or a book/magazine stand. How so? Well, depending on which way you flip it, the function changes. One side has a flat, sturdy surface to park your backside, while another side has slots that allow for records, books, or magazines to stand up straight. There’s quite a few options, and there’s no doubt you’ll have some fun moving it from room to room to fit your needs.

Harris Sofa by Montauk

Sofas are the most important of furnishings, right up there with mattresses. After all, we spend lots of time on our sofas- reading, watching shows and movies, sleeping. So, you might as well invest in something you really, truly love, right? For a recent project I looked and looked for the right sofa: it needed to be at least 8′ long, low, streamlined and soft. As in, take-a-nap-on-it soft. As is my usual luck, Montauk Sofa, which is not in my state, and only has showrooms that required me to get on a plane to see the sofa in person, had the right match: the Harris Sofa.

Sacrificial Chair by Thing Industries

You might as well succumb to the bad habit of shedding clothing onto furniture. It just takes so much extra effort to put them away. Imagine that last sentence said in a whiney voice, and know that I admit to a little laziness now and then. So, go ahead and buy the Sacrificial Chair by Thing Industries why don’t you, and see the pile of barely-used and needs-to-be-cleaned clothes pile on up into a spectacular mess of colors and textures. You could even call it an objet d’art if you want to sound pretentious.

Afteroom Lounge Chair

From the front or back, the Afteroom Lounge Chair may not look like anything special, but turn it slightly to the side and you’ll see the exaggerated arms swoop forward for an imposing silhouette. Afteroom’s Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei took inspiration from Thonet’s Bentwood Chair and Børge Mogensen’s Spanish Lounge, merging curves in powder-coated steel with low proportions and leather to make an interesting seating option for any lounge. Oh, and until March 31, get 20% off using code MS2016.

Casey Dzierlenga Bar and Counter Stools

These may not be around forever at this price, and that’s more the reason to seriously consider them as an option for your bar or counter space. Casey Dzierlenga has quite a collection of heirloom pieces, and though these stools may not have the same pedigree as her locally sourced materials, they still possess the same thoughtful styling and classic design. Plus, we should all support stores that work with designers to create affordable options of their designs- soooo much better to see than the evil alternative of rip-offs. And, if you like these stools, do be sure to take a look at Dzierlenga’s Little Potat Thinking Stool– it’s a thing of beauty.

Cherner® Task Chair

Do you know the contentious history of the Cherner Chair? I didn’t, but I’m glad Cherner’s sons revived their father’s designs, and created the variation you see above. Task chairs often look terrible, especially with today’s advanced ergonomic technology, and the simplicity of such classic lines when applied to an office/desk area seating option is enormously appealing. Now that we’ve discussed its aesthetic appeal, someone just needs to test out how comfortable this chair may or may not be after a few hours’ work.

Revolver Stool

There’s no telling how much fun you’ll have with a spinning barstool, but enjoyment aside, there’s a practicality in having a stool rotate a complete 360 degrees: ease of use. The Revolver Stool designed by Leon Ransmeier for HAY has circular seat, upper leg portion and footrest that spins completely around, giving you a comfortable and sensible seating option that fits in nicely with many a modern interior.

Bookniture

Furniture in a book? Yes, please. This was a Kickstarter project, but now you can purchase directly from Bookniture or from MoMA Store to have your very own book that transforms into a stool/ottoman/table, quick as can be. Maybe it’s perfect for your very small space (and budget), or maybe you just appreciate the fact that it’d be easy to take out to your patio or to the park. Either way, it’s easy to store away when not in use, as you can slide it in amongst your books on a bookshelf.

‘Diamond’ Poufs

Q: What do you get when you combine Studio Bertjan Pot with a company that has the name of a evil sorcerer a long history in Persian carpets? That’s not a joke, by the way, it’s just a way to solicit an exclamation of admiration of said studio. A: You get a wonderfully mixed triangular kilim pattern, in all sorts of “spicy colours” on rugs and poufs. Note: gird your loins, for the prices aren’t cheap.

‘Svelto’ Round Stacking Stool

At first glance, you could be forgiven for letting your eyes slide right over this stool on to other more exciting things. However, on second sight, if you don’t notice the lovely detail of the slightly concave top, and then, of course, the leg shape and joinery underneath (you do have to turn furniture over occasionally, it’s the nature of appreciating design), then I’ll have to give you a verbal slap for not paying attention. The Svelto Stool stacks for storage, with each stool rotating slightly from the one below.

Sidera Chair

Do you see a little Eames influence in this side chair? Maybe it’s the wood dowel legs, or maybe it’s the molded plastic seat and back. In any case, the expanding crosshatch pattern places it firmly in today’s world rather than amongst the mid century modern classics. You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised at the price tag: $250. Not too bad for a stylish side or desk chair, right?

The Palmerston Stool

Here’s another excellent option for a counter stool, straight from Coolican & Company. Handcrafted from solid Black Walnut (harvested on the Niagara Escarpment), the counter height stool has a classic turned leg with an interesting faceted top for comfort. The pared down styling makes it a future classic, as it would work well with many other design periods. The price is pretty reasonable too- or, at least not crazy expensive considering some of our other favorites.
