Soft Edge 70 Stool

Iskos-Berlinโ€™s Soft Edge Stool for HAY may look like a simple seating option, and it is, but you’d do well to notice the ultra-thin, soft-formed seat, and how its edges bend away from the body to optimize comfort. The skinny steel legs are functional, yet they add to the stool’s sense of lightness. Might it be a good place to perch, tucked beneath a small writing desk, or arranged around a meeting table? It’s also stackable, which is a definite plus when floor space is tight.

Painted Oak Stools

Maybe you can go chop down a tree, take off all the bark, then paint it and add a sturdy woven cotton handle, but some of us have other things to do. Plus, when these stools are less than $100 and made from sustainably harvested oak, it’s awfully hard to resist such affordable seats.

Lisboa Cork Stool

Short on seating? This guy is a smart buy that won’t break the bank. In comparison, just take a look at the Vitra Cork Stools, which I’ve always liked, priced at $490 each. And can we talk about how cork is such great material? It’s sustainable and it has a great texture that adds warmth and interest to any space.

The Abbott Stool

This three-legged stool is comfortable in its nudity. Solid construction with tenon joints, shapely legs, and a slightly beveled top combine to make it easy on the eyes; it’d be a shame for it to hide any of its parts behind paint.

Totem by Estudio Persona

So, don’t fret, this isn’t some silly art object with no use other than aesthetics. Yes, it is a totem, but you get actually get a suite of functional objects that can be stacked to form a “singular minimal structure.” Two stools and a tray rest upon a concrete base, creating a tall stack that takes up very little floor space. Disassemble and arrange the components to fit your needs.

Cottage Stools

How in the world has it taken so long for the Cottage Stools to hit our radar? The flat, rectangular tops plus the lovely joinery on the legs (see the tiny brass screws?) hit the right spot for everyday dining, or maybe even use the low stool as a side table in the living area or bedroom.

SO/HO Stool

This particular step stool doesn’t look like it belongs in warehouse, thank goodness. Rather, it looks like it belongs in a home- it’s the solid oak that makes it friendly. Keep it in your kitchen to reach those upper cabinets, or place it beside your bed or favorite chair to hold books. It folds away neatly when not in use.

Roger Stool by Sika-Design

This handmade stool is made from suar wood, which, if you’re not familiar, is a fast growing (and non-endangered) tropical hardwood. It has an interlocking grain that reduces the likelihood of cracking with temperature changes, and that’s very good news for those of us that hope our furniture lasts longer than our pithy life spans. And did you see the price? Very, very affordable which is oh-so-nice to see. Use it as a low table in the living room or take it outside, as it can go back and forth to suit your place-to-put-my-drink needs.

Switch Stool and Table

What’s better, a side table or a stool? That’s a tough one, so how about both? Bend Goods offers up the Switch Stool and Table. Add a glass top to the base and it’s a table. Add a stool pad (in vegan leather) and it’s a seat. The stool pad flips over for a more compact side table option too. Pretty handy to have around, don’t you think?

Common Leather Stool

There’s about a hundred places you could put this stool in your home. Maybe one (or two) in the living room as an extra perch or footstool, maybe one in the closet or bedroom for putting on/taking off shoes, or in a hallway or entryway as a focal point or resting spot… you get the idea. If you have any trouble getting it to fit, just let me know and I’ll take it off your hands, no trouble at all. And have you seen the all black colorway? Hot damn, it looks good.

Douguya Stool

Just in case you’re in the market for a small stool, you should train your eyes towards the Douguya Stool. It’s a replica of a vintage design (of unknown origin) and shows honest construction paired with sturdy materials. The brass metal frame is finished with an urushi (Japanese lacquer) coat and topped with a seat of Nara wood. It sure looks like it could take a few punches and still look good as new, and who doesn’t want that?

Swedese Spin Stool

The good news is the Spin Stool from Swedese in now on sale over at the Finnish Design Shop. The bad news is that shipping to the United States is sort of expensive- you’d still save a little cash, just not as much as if you were in the EU/UK. Made from laminated ash veneer, the Spin Stool is available in black, white, ash, grey, yellow, orange, and blue.
