Seating

Confluences by Philippe Nigro

I love the look of this so so much (such fun!).

How can one design a settee which satisfies the requirements of the majority of users? Different people have different physiognomies. And then there is the subjectivity of taste. CONFLUENCES is a ‘reconciliatory’ settee, since it draws its inspiration from such differences. CONFLUENCES attempts to supply an answer to an ergonomic problem, and in this way becomes a playground for plastic forms and colours in many shade variations. -Ligne Roset

Shadow Chair

This chair at first appears to balance only on its front legs. Clever.

A chair that integrates shadow into its structure…At first glance it is a simple chair that seems to defy gravity by standing upright while only having two front legs, but on closer inspection the shadow is part of the chair and made from steel, which is attached to a metal frame built inside the chair. Bate-Papo and Mocho Stool

These two entirely intriguing stools are part of MoMA Design Store’s new Destination Brazil collection.

Bate-Papo Stool, $495.00 ($445.50 Members),
Buy it here.

Inspired by stools used in the Brazilian countryside, designer Flavia Pagotti Silva created this contemporary seat. In Portuguese, “bate-papo” refers to an informal conversation between friends. This low, comfortable stool, made of four plywood disks attached to the chair’s frame through ball joints is meant to be used casually and as additional seating in informal settings. Made of plywood, ball joints, recycled rubber, and metal tubing. Size: 14h x 14l x 14″w

Mocho Stool, $550.00 ($495.00 Members), Buy it here.

Designer Sergio Rodrigues favors working with traditional materials like leather, wood, and cane splints in his product designs. The Mocho Stool, an update on the traditional milkmaid’s stool used throughout Brazil, is made of a solid hardwood frame, a single-lathed hollowed seat, and three lathed legs. A handle is incorporated into the design of the stool’s seat, making it easy to transport from place to place. Made of eucalyptus wood.
Size: 15.75h x 17.75″diam.

GJ Chair

Whoa, check this chair out. If you’re considering a lounge chair in a major-purchase sort of way, you might consider this one for it’s relative rarity.

Originally designed in 1963, just 300 pieces were made due to the complexity of the chair’s design. Just a few of the originals exist today. One is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In keeping with Jalk’s intentions, the chair and tables are reproduced in their original materials, teak and Oregon pine as well as black-stained ash. Two pieces of wood are moulded and conjoined in this daring design, which won Britain’s Daily Mail Design Competition in 1963.

This armless lounger has such nice fluid lines. Take note that this is more of a custom piece, so you would have to pick out your fabric and be patient with delivery.

Sheffield Sofa

Hmm, charismatically caramel or not, the price is not too outrageous on this sofa.

Charismatic in contemporary caramel, fluid in silhouette, these modern furniture supermodels are naturally poised for comfortable seating. Tantalizingly textural, too, in 55% polyester/ 45% linen. We also selected them for our unique collection because of their environmentally-sensitive construction including a durable, hardwood maple laminate frame and legs and seat cushions that have been filled with a recyclable virgin polyester fiber.

Bardolino Lounge Chair

With credentials to show weather-worthiness, this lounge chair would be an excellent candidate for being an indoor/outdoor chair (as in, would look just fine as an indoor chair until the weather’s nice, then pull it outside).

The indoor/outdoor Bardolino Collection has lines that echo the forms of classic mid-century European furniture, but its materials are squarely in the new millennium…They’re made from a powder-coated aluminum frame that’s wrapped in WaProLace® – a polyethylene fiber that has been specially tested to maintain its color and resist corrosion from chlorine, salt water or other outdoor elements. Nontoxic and 100% recyclable, WaProLace is easy to maintain and can withstand temperatures from -94°f to 176°f. The Lounge Chair is distinguished by a deliberately low seat and slightly inclined back.

bottegaMontana Stools

The left walnut stool has a humble name yet is reminiscent of the Eames Time Life Stools (it follows that the price makes a little more sense when noting the cost of the Eames Stools). Also notable is their other colorful stools, some of which are outdoor friendly (thanks Jake!).

Relief Chair

Hmm, while I can think of a few heavy-hitters that I’d rather spend 4 G’s on, I can pretty much guarantee that none of them are eco-friendly. Plus, the pattern on this chair made from stacking felt pieces is superb and gives a very luxe look.

The Relief Chair remasters the art of sculpting, using digital fabrication and solid, renewable materials. Materials commonly associated with seating – upholstery, foam products and toxic finishes – are all supplanted with thick sheets of natural wool felt, adhered with non-toxic, water-based adhesives. The precision-cut contours of each piece of felt are aggregated into sinuous yet comfortable forms. The cascading edges create an integral pattern with both a visual and tactile effect.

Zanotta Club Sofa and Armchair

So, once you get over the slight sticker shock, take a look at just how cool these outdoor/indoor pieces are…I love how simple the frame is, and how light the pieces appear.

Designed for indoor and outdoor use, the Club Sofa and Armchair are very versatile pieces of furniture. The steel internal structure has been painted so this set is suitable for outdoor use. Weave in PVC thread with nylon internal reinforcement, in the shade of brown, the Club Sofa and Armchair feature a unique design. Available with or without a seat cushion, these two items are perfect for lounging. -allmodern.com

Piazza Sofa (Sand/White)

I’ve posted the Piazza Sofa in the kelp color before, but this sandy color with the white pillow definitely has more of a sea breeze feel about it, and that’s always nice to have during hot summer months.

Now our long, lean, low to the floor unicushion goes two-tone. Pale khaki-ish frame/seat contrasts full-length pillow in super clean white-white. The price for such comfort? Amazingly low considering its high-end nature: Euro sleek profile in textured, tight 100% cotton weave has an air (or is that heir?) of the Hamptons about it.

Spindle Chair

Update: on sale for $49.00…snap ’em up while quantities last.

$99 for a sturdy white chair…not bad. (It reminds me a little of the Mademoiselle Rocking Chair, for obvious reasons.)

Modern spindle plays with scale in fresh white lacquer. It’s everything a chair should be: architecture, function, simplicity…and it makes us smile. Immediately at home with metal, woods, minimal, heirlooms. Eco-friendly solid rubberwood.

Egg Chairs (Outdoor)
