Shelving/Storage

Simple Shelf

Sure, a simple shelf sounds okay, but then you see the frame sort of floats away from the wall, and that means extra dimension. Not an extra dimension (don’t get too excited), just extra dimension, as in, a pinch of optical illusion when you walk by. The robots and bus make it look perfect for a kid’s room, but the collectors among us know an extra shelf or two means room to show off those few valuables/momentos that are worth keeping.

Shilf Modular Shelving System

Modular shelving? For real? Yes, it’s true, and I do have to say these look great in person, so you have my personal nod of approval. This set certainly isn’t new, as we first posted it years ago, but it’s worth remembering if you’re in the market for a storage system. The Shilf System allows for custom configurations without tools or hardware- you heard me right, no tools or hardware. You can buy the components individually or purchase a set, either way, you’ll have some great shelves that are easy to put together and easy to alter should your storage needs change.

Someone’s got the right idea here. A bureau that can switch from a changing table to a bar, and back again when the time is right. Oh, and maybe you’ll want an armoire? Add a top. It’s modular furniture that doesn’t look cheap, and offers a variety of door materials and styles. And, if a changing table/bar/bureau doesn’t fit your needs, there’s a Media Cabinet and Bookshelf worth a look.

Alden Sideboard

Sideboards are one of those investment pieces that stick with us no matter how much we move, so you might want to make sure you do your research before buying one just because it matches your dining table.

Eastvold has an excellent option in the Alden Sideboard. The wood grain runs seamlessly across the door/drawer fronts, giving a unified, sleek look. Dovetailed drawers, soft-close slides, and hidden hinges add to its qualifications. And, hey, this doesn’t have to go in your dining room; it can easily live as a media center, as it accommodates media equipment wiring and has adjustable shelves.

Swedese Ivy Shelving

If you like everything to be lined up and precise, this might not be the shelving for you. The Ivy has the option to seemingly sway precariously to the side; it also stacks straight up, but that’s not as much fun. Make it as high or as low as you wish, as each shelf is sold as a unit.

Magda Bookshelf

Interesting. This bookshelf is basically one steel tube with one central support, a little different from the usual two-bracket-one-flat-shelf idea, isn’t it? It’s stated that no tools are needed, but seeing as there screws in the picture, you might want to have a Phillips screwdriver handy.

The Dorm Shelf

Extreme minimalists: ignore this post. Everyone else: if you simply must display your trinkets and tchotchkes, consider the Dorm shelf by Ferm Living. It’s a more modern option than anything you’ll find on eBay, and will set off your collectibles without offending anyone’s eyes.

BrickBox

This might look vaguely IKEA-ish, but rest assured its origins are in Spain rather than Sweden. Modular boxes are stacked to create a versatile and very portable storage solution. The boxes are deep enough for vinyl records or cable boxes and may be disassembled for shipment. Do make note that you’ll need both the large and small modules to create a finished edge as shown above.

Score Storage

This Score Storage by Debra Folz integrates a textile to soften up the hard edges of case goods. The interchangeable 100% wool panels are magnetically attached to the outside, so they’re easy to switch out when you want a color change. Combine several colors if you’re feeling particularly brave or stick to a nice monochrome palette; either way, it will be nice to mix things up with a quick color change.

Symbol Record Storage Cabinet

If you’ve refused to surrender your record collection (or CD collection, for that matter), you’ll be overjoyed to see this series from Symbol Audio. The LPC series is made specifically for housing vinyls, and each “hopper” drawer swivels open to show up to 160 records. You can choose between a few sizes depending on your collection (and budget), with or without drawers sized for holding CDs. Each piece is bench-made to order in West Virginia, so you’ll have to wait around 4-6 weeks, but that’s nothing compared to not having the perfect storage piece.

Askew Shelves

Do you need some sculptural storage? Of course you do, who doesn’t? Debra Folz brings us these Askew shelves, which are, you guessed it, set askew to the wall. The drawer fronts are nicely crafted as to be almost invisible, and while it would cost quite a few pretty pennies to install several on a wall, it would look fantastic. Maybe settling for just one in an entry way (or as a beside table?) is a nice compromise.

Heavy Stock

Flat packable shelving usually brings to mind heavy boxes and a fair amount of cursing during assembly. In contrast, this low shelving system by Calen Knauf has no heavy wood composite pieces and looks pretty simple to put together. The Heavy Stock has super thin steel shelves with maple legs that ensure stability with little visual weight. And, bonus points: you can arrange the pieces in an infinite array of configurations.
