Shelving/Storage

BrickBox

This might look vaguely IKEA-ish, but rest assured its origins are in Spain rather than Sweden. Modular boxes are stacked to create a versatile and very portable storage solution. The boxes are deep enough for vinyl records or cable boxes and may be disassembled for shipment. Do make note that you’ll need both the large and small modules to create a finished edge as shown above.

Score Storage

This Score Storage by Debra Folz integrates a textile to soften up the hard edges of case goods. The interchangeable 100% wool panels are magnetically attached to the outside, so they’re easy to switch out when you want a color change. Combine several colors if you’re feeling particularly brave or stick to a nice monochrome palette; either way, it will be nice to mix things up with a quick color change.

Symbol Record Storage Cabinet

If you’ve refused to surrender your record collection (or CD collection, for that matter), you’ll be overjoyed to see this series from Symbol Audio. The LPC series is made specifically for housing vinyls, and each “hopper” drawer swivels open to show up to 160 records. You can choose between a few sizes depending on your collection (and budget), with or without drawers sized for holding CDs. Each piece is bench-made to order in West Virginia, so you’ll have to wait around 4-6 weeks, but that’s nothing compared to not having the perfect storage piece.

Askew Shelves

Do you need some sculptural storage? Of course you do, who doesn’t? Debra Folz brings us these Askew shelves, which are, you guessed it, set askew to the wall. The drawer fronts are nicely crafted as to be almost invisible, and while it would cost quite a few pretty pennies to install several on a wall, it would look fantastic. Maybe settling for just one in an entry way (or as a beside table?) is a nice compromise.

Heavy Stock

Flat packable shelving usually brings to mind heavy boxes and a fair amount of cursing during assembly. In contrast, this low shelving system by Calen Knauf has no heavy wood composite pieces and looks pretty simple to put together. The Heavy Stock has super thin steel shelves with maple legs that ensure stability with little visual weight. And, bonus points: you can arrange the pieces in an infinite array of configurations.

Joyce Cabinet

Remember this? It’s now available in red, perfect for a punch of color in any dull room. The Joyce Cabinet balances a spare painted frame with an incredibly warm wood interior. Sliding glass doors with plenty of shelves and drawers makes it a perfect choice for storing your collectables, and while inspired by the Victorian era optometrist’s shopfitting, it certainly looks thoroughly modern today.

Available in solid timber and painted finishes with interior options of shelves and/or drawers and combinations thereof.

Email wfour design directly to discuss which piece you’d like to customize (more info on the custom page). Also, make note of the encouragement wfour gives for spraypainting the legs when you want a color change; it’s nice to know they understand those of us that like to switch things up.

Shingles Pantry

You remember the Envelope Chest from Field Day, right? Well, this is another piece of theirs, and it’s equally fetching. Covered in “fancy-cut” Western Red Cedar shingles, the piece will add texture and depth to a room while providing four shelves of storage space. Facecord Cabinet

Burglars in a huge hurry will probably pass this fully functional cabinet right on by, if you’re lucky. If you’re not lucky, they’ll be smart and guess that the legs and the possible lack of fireplace mean that this stack of firewood is actually a cabinet, and then they’ll plunder the heck out of it. (Note: if you’re handy, you have little choice but to do a DIY version of this, and then be smug that you saved a bunch of money.)

Signal Shelves

These Signal shelves by Brendan Ravenhill and Chris Adamick are pretty interesting. The steel brackets can be positioned anywhere, much like any ordinary shelf brackets, and set off the wood shelves in a bold and graphic way. The shelves are sold in sets of six brackets, two uprights, and either 8″ or 10″ wide shelves.

Envelope Chest

Expletive! This Envelope Chest is so very clever for its appropriation of the classic string-and-button envelope closure. It has custom leather rounds and cord (instead of paper and string) and has soft close hinges. Be sure to take a look at the other pieces in Field Day’s collection: Shingles Pantry and the Vault Dresser.

Rustic Storage Console

I’ve been looking for a table for my entry for things like mail, keys and other remnants from a long day of work. At the time, I wasn’t able to find anything, so I had something made by a local craftsman for under $300. It’s a nice sturdy piece, but it doesn’t have drawers, and that would definitely keep that area tidier than it is looking now.

This piece by WestElm is actually almost exactly the same size, but it has the drawers that I’m now wishing my custom console had. Constructed from solid mango wood, the piece has a nice muted look.
