Loop Light by Voon Wong and Benson Saw

Something about this light looks like sex incarnate. Maybe it’s the sleek stainless steel finish or maybe it’s because it reminds me of that Hussein Chalayan hat – the one that sucks the girl’s dress up into it. See the video at Style.com and skip to 4:24. I’m no male chauvinist, but some people might consider that better living through design.

Also available in nickel-painted steel.

Coil Lamp DIY

Do you have an extra extension cord lying around? If so, you could make a lamp with this kit. You simply snap the two pieces of the lamp together, insert bulb unit, and then wrap the cord around the lamp using the guide cut outs, and voilà! You have yourself a coil lamp.

Whoa, take a look at the different color choices for this light. No surprise it was inspired by the colors found underwater, as it reflects and diffuses a wide range of each hue. Made from Opalflex®, which is a recyclable material.

NoPoPo Mini Flashlight

Pretty standard-looking right? Well, this NoPoPo flashlight has a unique feature that makes it a must have for emergency, camping, and survival kits – it’s powered by a special NoPoPo battery that runs on water or any liquid: beer, sake, cola, and urine…takes recycling to a whole new level. Just use the included syringe to fill the battery. And better yet, the NoPoPo (No Pollution Power) battery doesn’t contain mercury, lead, or any of the other nasties that are in traditional batteries, just good old-fashioned carbon (like what’s in you and me) and magnesium (like vitamins) that react with liquid to provide about 2 volts of power. One NoPoPo battery can hold its charge up to 10 years and can be re-filled up to 5 times. Oh, and the flashlight converts to a lantern with a simple slide.

Raimond Light

Hello, hello. These mathematically based stainless steel spheres transport electrical current while the LED lights evenly spread warm white light around a room. It’s not often that stainless steel can appear both delicate and strong, but it certainly seems so in this case. Available in three sizes, this light is sure to fit any room, but with the smallest starting at $1,869.00 it unfortunately won’t fit every budget.

Designer: Raimond Puts, 2006.
Stainless steel, PMMA.

Domino Lamps

Brooklyn-based home furnishings company Grenkol creates an interesting palette of textures with their Domino Lamp series, consisting of cast oriented strand board concrete coupled with candlelight-brightness low wattage incandescent light bulbs. I really love the industrial toggle switch as a finishing touch. Available in 1, 2, and 4 socket configurations and also offered as a set.

30 Pencil Icosahedron

Designer Michiel Cornelissen creates a perfect blend of technology and readymade craft with his 30 Pencil Icosahedron kit. The connecting joints are 3d printed, and coupled with 30 pencils (provided by you) creates a cool icosahedron shape. I would prefer to skip the lamp shade function and just have them around to play with as a sculptural toy.

Sabine Iron Glass Desk Lamp

Simple, but the gold finish dresses it up quite a bit, no? It’s nice that it’s just the base and the glass- no shade to take up space. There’s also a floor lamp version but it’s price is a bit steeper at $880.

Moonbird Table Light

Swoon. Designboom has pictures of this lamp when it first hit the scene in ’09 (Milan Design Week) along with the designer’s quote, ‘I designed this lamp with the image of a bird perched silently under the moonlight in mind.’ A lovely thought, isn’t it?

Mater Black Dome and Shade Pendal Lamp

I think my heart stopped at the sight of the Black Dome Lamp. What is it about black matte lamps? Maybe it’s that the appearance is so contrary to their function? Whatever the reason, these two lights are lovely and minimalist (and expensive).

The dome lamp is an iconic representation of “what is light.” Light emanates evenly in a 360 degree pattern from its source (such as in the case with the sun), so therefore the most honest approach toward the design of a lamp was a spherical solution. The design is essentially a “globe” form, “hollowed out” to allow the light to distribute. Such a mathematical solution enables the design to be timeless and familiar, however completely new in approach, as it is more of an engineering solution than a fashion-based one.
