Edge Light

Man-oh-man, here’s one killer task light. Amanda Levete showcases the new technology of OLED lighting in a twisting, flat ribbon of steel, with only the cord to offset the powder coated (or polished) surface. What’s so special about OLED lighting, you might wonder. Apparently it’s a super-thin, lightweight panel that casts an even glow without glare, flickering or excessive heat. Impressive, yes, but for now let’s just admire the beauty of this self-supporting form from afar, at least until the technology becomes a bit more affordable.

Available in powder coated or polished stainless steel with a red, yellow or blue cord.

Acquatinta Pendant Lamp

I’m digging this series of glass pendant lamps from Produzione Privata. They’re created from mouth-blown Murano glass and are available in an assortment of finishes/colors, but I think most would agree with me that the ones to get are the transparent glass ones. They best illustrate the form and showcase the beauty of the internal hardware itself. Prices range from $600 – $900.

Designer: Michele de Lucchi
Colors: white, black, sanded, silver, transparent green, transparent
Material: Mouth blown Murano glass
Comes with 59″ of cable that can be shortened
Uses 1 X 100W 120V E26 (medium base) incandescent lamp (not included).

Satsuma Lamp

Radiating blades of plywood slats have the traditional ‘lamp’ silhouette while filtering the bright glare of a lightbulb into a nice soft glow, thus eliminating any need for a ho-hum lampshade. I particularly like how the wood will give an extra element of texture to a room.

Material: Plywood

Niche Pendants

Interestingly enough, the founders of Niche Modern were designing products for themselves, not the design-minded public, when they started getting orders. That’s no surprise, really, considering the lovely hand blown shapes and warm colors. No two are exactly the same, which is reason enough to mix and match in order fit your specific sensibilities.

Prices start at $440.00

Truncheon Task Light

This here is one impressive looking lamp.  It may be hard to see from the picture, but the wooden fixture has a “scalloped-edge ring effect” across its length, creating a pretty neat visual and physical texture. It’s available in Maple or Walnut, with a Bronze or Hydrocal (Plaster) base. The light itself is supplied by cool and efficient LED bulbs.

Matt Lamp

Four feet of soft, knitted cord means you can play around with how this lamp is displayed. Hanging a few over a dining table (maybe twisted/knotted together) could be interesting, or the loop idea on a wall over the bed would be a nice soft texture to a sleeping area. A silicone-covered energy saving bulb is included, so you won’t have to worry about safety.

Distortion Candlestick

While this has quite a bit of wait time, it’s an excellent price for a great little conversation piece. Rapid prototyping is really enabling designers to make some interesting stuff, as is the case with this candlestick. A traditional candlestick form is warped through 3D rendering, then rapid prototyped and cast.

Available for pre-order.

Stanley Candlesticks

Inspired by the traditional matchbox, designer Simon Donald created the Stanley series of oak candle stick holders. What really makes it stand out is the bright block of yellow, which is actually sandpaper for use as a striking surface.

Materials: Solid oak, brass inserts and household sandpaper

Mokusei Lamp

Made from 20 pieces of triangle shaped veneer, this light makes for a pretty picture. You assemble the light like a puzzle, either as shown above or as two separate more oval shaped lights. One drawback is that it doesn’t come with a wire unit (it’s flat-packed after all) but that’s easy enough to pick up at a hardware store (or Ikea?). Also, if you’re the curious type, ‘Mokusei’ means wooden-made and also Jupiter in Japanese.

Flat Light Poster

Finally available to purchase (after quite a bit of waiting, I might add), this Flat Light Poster was designed by Finn Magee after he admired the light and atmosphere of an Anglepoise task light. This would be the perfect sort of light for a cramped space, wouldn’t it?

Ouch. Simple and stylish are two words synonymous with Autoban, but the prices kind of hurt, don’t they? That’s what the piggy bank is for though, isn’t it, to save for expensive-but-really-lovely accessories?

Artecnica Phrena Lamp

It’s taken a while for this lamp to finally be available for purchase, but my-oh-my, wasn’t it well worth the wait? Karl Zahn wanted the light assembly to be “as simple as opening a book”, and describes the light at its most basic level as a “composition of pages all working together in symmetry.” It arrives perfectly flat and through careful opening becomes a beautiful three dimensional shade. Available in either a pendant or table lamp, the white tyvek shade provides a warm, even glow to any area.
