Picture Ledge

One might argue that ‘clever’ may not be the best description of Raumgestalt’s Picture Ledge, as it is, in fact, two pieces of wood held together by an elastic band. The more craftier among us may be able to replicate the design with just a little elbow grease (to cut the wood) and determination (to search for the right sort of rubber band). However, if you refuse to pick up a hand saw and really, really need a place to display some extra pictures, notes or photos, maybe you’ll decide to buy a few of the ledges and call it a day*.

Vinyl Record Frames

If you’ve got a vinyl collection, you must show off some of your favorites- it’s a law, I think. If you’re still searching for the right thing, consider these Vinyl Record Frames. They make it easy to slip a record in and out so you can play or display your LPs whenever you want. They’re easy to install too- drywall screws are included but you can use indoor mounting tape or nails if you’re feeling extra lazy.

Portfolio

So, this isn’t a scrapbook, it’s a Portfolio. That’s said with a teensy bit of snobbery, by the way. A thick paper accordion is held between two pieces of solid oak with a large rubber band to hold it all together. Think of it as a cool way to showcase photos and/or drawings- perhaps from a vacation or special event (gift alert!). When opened, the Portfolio stands on its own for display.

Stanley Magnetic Photo Stand by Plywerk

You’ve got to show off your favorite photographs somehow, because zooming in on a device just doesn’t do them justice. Instead of settling for sub-par frames at a local shop (ick), consider the Stanley Magnetic Photo Stand by Plywerk. Two pieces of walnut (locally harvested, hazard or salvaged) have super strong neodymium magnets that snap together to hold your favorite snaps. No glass to break, and you can change the wood around to rest flat, curved, or flipped. Or separate the two pieces and use them as magnets on the fridge. Snappity snap snap.

Rotating Frame Set

It’s nice to have a few personal photos in frames scattered around, unless you’re a severe minimalist, in which case those same pictures of family and friends would give you a serious bout of itchiness. It holds ten photos or artworks, and each frame rotates on a wood dowel for vertical or horizontal presentation. On sale now from MoMA Store for $39.95 (contrast that with the sold out $85 tag over at Dwell Store).

Frame Drawing Pad

A quick framing job is just what your drawings need, because, let’s face it, you’re not a famous artist (yet). I’d suggest scattering a few of these around the house for friends and family to play Picasso and possibly leave you some excellent little cartoons that you’ll cherish for years… or throw away as soon as they leave the room, it’s up to you.

Rope Frames by Dollinger and Fleveau

Yes, these frames are a little more expensive that what you may be used to, but they’re made of cotton rope (probably by hand). Traditionally used as piping in furniture, the cotton rope is used in a traditional style to playfully mix historical periods. Frame whatever you choose- a picture, a mirror, or leave it empty as a piece of art on its own.

T-frame T-shirt Display

Now, some might say that framing a favorite t-shirt is for a 20-something’s decor, but we’ll politely ignore them and carefully put ours behind this frame from Umbra. Never say donate! (Never say donate to the one (or two) worn out shirts that are worth keeping, that is, but donate the heck out of the clothes you don’t wear.)

Nearest is Dearest Picture Frame Set

If you’re still searching for a Valentine’s Day gift, listen up. Unless you have the time to make something thoughtful (like your own valentine notebook), do not, I repeat, do not, resort to a heart shaped box of chocolates or fluffy teddy bear. It lacks all kinds of imagination and is just plain wrong. You can do better. Perhaps pick out a picture frame, or two, such as this Nearest is Dearest Picture Frame Set, and choose a few special photos of you and your sweetheart together. Print them out (high quality setting, mind you), write a heartfelt note and call it a day. Unless you’ve a high maintenance significant other, you’re off the hook until next year.
