ReFleece iPad Sleeve

It’s an iPad sleeve, big deal. Except this one is made from reclaimed fleece jackets and sweaters, so it beats the pants off other normal sleeves (ba-dum ching!). The shells are lightweight, fuzzy, and water resistant thanks to a unique method of fabrication created by designer Sam Palmer. Every single case is made in the US from recycled materials that are sourced locally. There’s also a ReFleece Kindle Cover ($25, shown below), if you’re interested.

Faraday Porteur Bicycle

Clunky batteries, impractical, and just plain ugly are words that come to mind when the words “electric bicycle” come up. However, as urban bicycle ridership increases, bicycle manufacturers such as new start-up Farady are addressing these issues. Their flagship bicycle, the Porteur, is their first offering. It starts with a US-made steel frame with time-tested geometry. Safety and practicality are built-in with a removable front rack, integrated lights, wood fenders, and an accessory bag. The 8-speed internal hub is attached to an electric assist for those challenging hills or heavy grocery hauls. I had the pleasure of seeing this bike at last September’s Oregon Manifest, a handmade custom bicycle show. As it was my favorite bike at the show, I’m extremely pleased to see that it came to life from a mere show concept to market, something that rarely happens at these kinds of events.

What is it?

I write ‘what is it?’ as the title knowing full well that if you’re viewing this post on our RSS feed, you’ll see the revealing photo first. Sorry. If you don’t see the revealing photo, you can play along. So, what is it? Hint: it’s not an ironing board cover, nor is it a double layered apron. Also, (this might give it away) some of us wish we could use this everyday… if we lived in the right location and possessed some sort of body coordination, that is.

Logitech Washable Keyboard

What’s more dirty and germ-filled than your toilet seat? Your keyboard. In a test of eight everyday items for dirtyness, it ranked a dismal number four (thank you to the Mythbusters for their research). You can now extend your good hygiene habits to your keyboard with this washable keyboard from Logitech. Great for any office environment or a shared computer setting (like a family computer). USB plug and play for Windows PC, but also Mac-compatible.

The Bike Pump Keychain

This is a bike pump. On a keychain. How can that be? This little key chain attachment is the missing link between you and air compressors found throughout your city. Simply remove it from your key chain, connect it to one end of an air compressor at an auto shop (or fire station), and then connect the other end to your bike tire. Use the compressor’s gauge to fill to the correct PSI. Of course, this is really limited to cities where auto shops and fire stations are everywhere, but, hey, if you live in one of those cities, you’re in luck.

Turtle Shell

Say, do you ever desire a portable, water resistant, wireless boombox that you can attach to your bike or kid’s stroller? If that answer is yes, head on over to Kickstarter where you have the chance to back Outdoor Tech’s Turtle Shell. For $99 you’ll own a Turtle Shell speaker or spend a bit more ($125) and you’ll get the Turtle Claw Mount as well. Thanks to its camera threading, the Turtle Shell attaches to any standard camera accessory so the Claw Mount isn’t necessary, fyi.

Portable Magnetic Speaker

Hrm, I wonder if this Portable Magnetic Speaker actually produces decent sound? It’s tiny at 1.75″ x 1.75″, and has a powerful magnet that can be clipped to clothing or bags to keep it close. The battery (lithium-ion) is rechargeable via the included USB cable. Audiophiles, what do you think?

Chute Lightweight Bag

Sure, you have your reusable bags, but do they fold up as easy as this one? Simply pull the aluminum handle and the bag collapses neat and tidy to be stored away. This quick action is thanks to a paracord that runs through the bag and pulls the structure together. Carbon fiber tubes reinforce the bottom of the bag.

Woolfiller Kit

I know it’s just the beginning of fall, but may I ask you to assess your sweater collection? And, if, by chance, you find a few holes or stains in your favorite woolen or cashmere item, do not despair, for there’s a relatively easy solution found in the Woolfiller kit by Heleen Klopper.

It’s easier to show the video (below) than to walk through the instructions, but, trust me, anyone can do this. And, yes, it might be a little quirkier look than you’re used to, but I’d encourage you to try it out on at least one piece of clothing, for you’ll save yourself the time and money of replacing the item completely. Keep in mind that the patches tend to stand out more when the colors are varied (as shown in the image above), but you can mix or match however you want. Also, don’t just stop at sweaters; you can use this kit to repair rugs, curtains, etc.

Portable Body Scale

If you hadn’t seen the title, would you have guessed what this was? At first glance, it sort of looks like a new tablet device, or very huge smart phone. Or a pice of plastic that reads your weight by scanning your irises. All those exciting things are unfortunately incorrect, as it is a portable body scale. However, if you’re a tad fanatical about losing some of those pounds, you will be excited, because now you can weigh yourself wherever you want. Have a small bathroom? It’s only 8.27″ x 4.33″, so it’ll fit. Weigh yourself (or your suitcase) when traveling, or pull it out of your bag while you’re waiting in line at the fast food joint.

The Camera Cooler Bag

What better way to relax after a long day of shooting than with a nice cold beverage? Too bad your camera bag isn’t also a cooler… oh well. Wait, did you say something? There’s such a thing?! Indeed, there is, and it’s about to change your excursions from being a ho-hum-sort-of-thirsty hell to a I-can-handle-anything-because-I-have-refreshments blissful outing. Or so we hope. A removable insert protects your camera and lenses while the insulated walls will keep your lunch/snacks cool. Just be sure to keep food and drinks separate and securely closed from your gear, because someone (pointing at you) will be unhappy if the two should mix.

Fitbit

Do you really know how active you are? Do you know how many flights of stairs you take each day or how many calories you burn? If not, that’s where this little gadget comes into play. The Fitbit is a tracker that shows your real-time activity. Your full day’s steps, distance, calories burned, stairs climbed, all of it counted and logged, even your sleep (if you want).

It’s small enough to clip onto your waistband or slide into a pocket, and it syncs to the Fitbit website where you may further track your food intake and compare your activity with others. On a personal note, I bought a Fitbit a few weeks ago and it has been an excellent motivator to be more active, even if it’s just getting up from my desk more often to get cups of tea. Where once I might have conveniently ignored the fact that I had not exercised, now it’s unavoidable, especially as I have a significant other that keeps a healthy competition going as to who has climbed the most flights of stairs per day. More info below.
