These functional saw-horse legs are usually used for industrial use (2,000 lb capacity!), but they’re simple enough to provide a base for a gorgeous slab of wood or even a piece of glass. If the red doesn’t suit your needs, you could even have them powder coated locally, or if you’re up for a DIY you can just spray paint them.

Sometimes West Elm really knocks some winners right out of the park and I’ve got to say I’m impressed with this little side table. The wood is sustainably harvested and the top removes and doubles as a tray.

If your kitchen table doubles as a workspace (breadcrumbs in your laptop and wine stains on your papers) take note of this flexible table. All your work junk can be stored inside, ready to be squirreled away simply by closing the tops and drawers, and voilà, you have a clean tabletop ready for dinner.

Judith Seng is a German designer who has worked with different studios to create interesting pieces (one of which is the super minimal design house Industreal).

Her line of Trift Tables are solid wood pieces of wood, are partially painted with a high-gloss color, revealing the grain of the wood below. Each piece is unique depending on the size of the wood.

These sturdy tables are made from a single piece of solid aluminum, so you know they’re not going anywhere when the wind blows. Suitable for outdoor use.

You’ve seen the original “blow up” series in stainless steel (2003), but take a look at the newer bamboo version. The natural bamboo sticks are hand tied using raffia soaked in glue, which results in a strong yet lightweight framework. It’s nice to see a warmer alternative to the original steel.

Okay, so we usually try to avoid featuring things from IKEA, because you most likely already know what they have and it’s a no-brainer if you’re on a very tight budget. But this little desk seems like the perfect sort of thing for a cramped workspace, and with the inside lined in felt with pockets and paper holders, plus a cable management compartment, it’s suddenly sprung from so-so to a wow-that’s-a-big-bang-for-your-buck sort of item. Keep in mind you’d still have to buy the legs, but that’s not a lot to add on price wise.

This engineered wood top desk has a pretty good sized work surface at 5′ wide. For those of you that like to spread out all your papers and such, that’s no small matter, and the $280 price tag means you can splurge on storage options. The steel sheet legs “fold” at a right angle.

From designer Andrew Tye is this wonderful plywood coffee table. The wood sections stack and intersect (without the use of any other hardware) to create the base of the table, and is finished with a hardened glass top.

Hand thrown out of 62 kilo wet clay, these tables designed by Nicholai Wiig Hansen are a sight to behold. With colors inspired from Nordic painters, they are hand painted (painstakingly, it seems) at a Danish potter workshop. The video below shows the process.
