This piece would be perfect for tucking away a home office. The size is big enough to hold a computer, accessories and files, yet it’s not too large… as in, it’s not a wooden behemoth crouched in the corner of your living room. There’s the mid century feel that most of us are fond of, and it’s handcrafted (domestically) of solid cherry wood, which means it’ll last long enough to pass down to your children/relatives.

I’ve always been a fan of furniture with simple, clean lines, and so it’s no surprise that this Celine Desk caught my eye. One drawer hides away clutter and, on the right, an open cubby provides a nice spot for a stack of papers or folders. Before anyone comments: yes, it does look a little West Elm-ish, but I’d bet/hope that the quality is three times as nice and that it’d last a lot longer. The designer Nazanin Kamali was inspired by mid century architecture.

Here’s a coffee table that puts an end to clutter: two hidden drawers reveal storage at each end, making a secret spot to stash away tv remotes, games, and reading materials. Not a bad price either. (There’s some assembly required, but I’m guessing it’s just attaching the legs.)

I just came across this fantastic looking series tables and lamps at Design Milk. The Mesh Series by Horgan Becket is a collection of tables and lamps inspired by steel wire forms commonly seen in fencing and other industrial applications. While the industrial look is certainly in these days, it takes a special touch and consideration not just go with, “add steel here, big welds over there, finish with worn reclaimed wood”, and actually design something unique without straying too far from the original aesthetic. Hold onto your pants, dear, because this beauty is not stateside. I know, it’s so frustrating when not all beautiful things are available to us right away and without shipping fees, but, such is the nature of our world. So, if you live in a European country or if you have loads of cash, consider this writing desk by Young & Norgate. The sleek silhouette has its drawer mechanics exposed, making a feature out of the function. Sized for your correspondence needs (laptop or pen and paper), there’s adequate surface and storage space, with an optional cable well hidden into the back. Having a desk like this would make answering emails less of a chore and more of a pleasure, I’d think.

I’m really digging this new Slope Desk by British via Norway designer Thomas Jenkins.

It gestures at traditional sloped drafting tables with a downward angled surface and adds two hinged doors revealing felt-lined compartments for storage and organization. Two included wedges create a level surface for holding pens and your favorite drink. Solid maple legs support a desk surface constructed from a mix of birch veneer MDF and plywood.

Over the past few years, I’ve read (and responded) to quite a few emails asking about the Hola Y Adios Entry Table and where it might be found. Sadly, it seems to remain unavailable despite its apparent popularity. However, there is hope: look at this little new console table from Gus*. It measures 36″w x 32″h x 10″d, which is the exact same depth as the Hola Y Adios, and is a tad less wide (-4″) and tall (-3″). Plus, it’s got a rectangular recess to keep important things in place (like keys, phones, mail, etc.).

This desk is an odd sort of fellow with its angles and points and slim drawers. Inspired by mid-century furniture in the designer’s childhood, the desk looks both classic and futuristic, which by no means is an easy task. Solid walnut makes for a sturdy frame with just enough worktop space for a small computer and writing space, and five drawers are available to squirrel away odds and ends. There’s also another thoughtful detail worth mentioning: the angle of the top drawers allow for the pitch of an open laptop.

For this Thursday’s design classic we have Frank Gehry’s Easy Edges Low Table Set. You’ll probably recognize these, as Gehry is well known for using cardboard to make several pieces (Wiggle Chair, Wiggle Stool) of the Easy Edges Collection. Of course, most the world recognizes Gehry for his architecture rather than his use of a rather humble material in surprisingly sturdy furniture.

I’d like to say this console would be easy to build, but I think that’s being more than a little optimistic. The leaning design cuts down on visual clutter, seeing as there are two legs instead of the usual four, which would help a small space appear to be just a little larger. Sure, the Loop Stand Table ($1,265.00) is an excellent choice for a dining or work table. However, if you’re on a tight budget, you might think about purchasing the Loop Stand Frames (2 pcs, $289.00) instead and then figure out an alternative top for yourself. (Personally, I’ve stained and sealed a plywood top for my own dining table for around $100 and been quite pleased with the results.)
