Matrix Table

From designer Andrew Tye is this wonderful plywood coffee table. The wood sections stack and intersect (without the use of any other hardware) to create the base of the table, and is finished with a hardened glass top.

NW1 Table

Hand thrown out of 62 kilo wet clay, these tables designed by Nicholai Wiig Hansen are a sight to behold. With colors inspired from Nordic painters, they are hand painted (painstakingly, it seems) at a Danish potter workshop. The video below shows the process.

Sean Dix Forte Coffee Table

Not a bad price for a coffee table, seeing as it’s comfortably under the $500 mark. The angled legs makes for an interesting detail, yet it’s robust and sturdy looking, as it should be since the legs are cut from solid American walnut (or oak). A veneered hardwood top finishes it off with a nice ‘organic geometry’.

American Walnut ($379) or American Oak ($349).
Also available in a round-topped version for $499.

Marble Coffee Table (match off)

At first glance, these two pictures might appear to be of the same table taken in different lighting, but perhaps the more discerning can pick out a few tiny details that sets one apart from the other. There’s not much, mind you, but there is a difference, most noticeably in the price.

Can you guess which one is $900 and which is $300?

Answer and info on both below.

Clarity Color Glass Tables

This looks like something straight out of Verner Panton’s portfolio, doesn’t it? Pink, orange, and yellow glass is combined to form these colorful ‘color-wheel’ tables. Now, if only they made this in a lucite-ish version at, let’s say, a fifth of the cost, then maybe it’d fit nicer into all of our budgets.

Dot Coffee and Side Table

These round Dot Tables are quite the buy at $150 and $400 respectively. It’s a lot of that clean-lined look for a rather reasonable price tag (in my opinion).

Offi Big Rib Coffee Table

A coffee table inspired by pork ribs sounds frankly more than a little unappetizing, however once you get past the food connotation, the modular form makes sense. Easy to assemble, the ribs allow the table to grow to whatever size you need, enabling a custom fit at a fraction of a custom price. With the purchase of an add-on kit (soon to be available) the table can grown three ribs at a time.

Designed by Eric Pfeiffer.

Cornered Coffee Table by Dylan Gold

What do you think of this? Sort of like the Twisted Console posted before, this piece by Dylan Gold has a little bit of wonkiness to make for an interesting piece of furniture.

Take your average coffee table, construct one leg as a cross-section of a rotated cube and you get a table that values a clean surface area without losing a place to hold your favorite books and magazines. The Cornered coffee table embodies the inherent function of all coffee tables.

Cubo Coffee Table

Hidden storage space in a coffee table is absolutely perfect for those eyesores (otherwise known as remotes) lying around the living room.

Elegant and asymmetrical, the Cubo Coffee Table offers not only a large surface space, but also neatly concealed storage. The Table’s rich, warm American butternut veneer is expertly applied and has a visible grain pattern. The storage space is accessed by rotating the larger “leg” outward, revealing a spacious spot to stash magazines, books or remotes. Storage space is lined in red Spinneybeck® Recycled leather, offering a compelling material contrast to the neutral tones of the wood. Made in U.S.A.

Pirwi Arbol Tables

So, straight off, take note that the prices are separate for the base and glass tops, because you can most likely source a glass or wood top for less than the retailer’s quote (which they actually recommend considering shipment costs). That said, these are exceptionally affordable for the design quality and would most likely be an extremely smart purchase for your home.

The coffee tables are assembled from eight identical pieces and feature a system of central joining that imitates the trunks and branches of trees, where the strength of the whole comes from distributing the work amongst all the limbs. These pieces can be used with either a circular glass top, or a birch plywood surface. The Árbol collection won second place at the National Design Biennial 2007, Mexico City.

Designer: Emiliano Godoy, 2007
Materials: Birch plywood, Livos finish, glass top
Colors: walnut, black, maple, ash, beech, grey

The Splice Coffee Table by Umbra U+ Collection

It could be argued that splayed legs of this ‘broken’ coffee table might cause some bruised or broken toes, but perhaps the novelty and magazine storage overshadow that particular concern.

The splice coffee table’s “broken” appearance has a functional aspect – its V-shaped base is perfect for storing magazines. Featuring a 12mm tempered glass top tinted smoke gray. Base created from solid Canadian maple with a satin charcoal finish, by traditional woodworkers in St. Jacob’s, Ontario.
