Rochelle Sofa by Gus Design

With definite roots in mid-century design, this sofa has some rather nice detailing with the exposed wood and button-tufting.

‘Solid wood legs elevate this Gus Modern couch off the ground, effecting a unique “floating” look. The wood detailing extends up the back of the sofa for a striking visual accent. Button-tufted fabric upholstery achieves a pleasing loft for hours of relaxation, while a tight back eliminates the need to continually arrange and tidy loose cushions.’

New Antiques by Marcel Wanders for Cappellini

I’m enjoying the New Antiques collection by Marcel Wanders. This chair in particular strikes my fancy. It’s a Klismos style chair (an ancient Greek form) merged with the turned wood technique, where wood is thrown on the lathe for the “knobby” appearance.

“A stunning takeoff on period furniture, the new antique wood-turned chairs and tables are available in matte black or white lacquer. the chair seats are upholstered with polyurethane foam and covered with a choice of smooth G908 or stamped leather of the same color choice as the frame. the seat is also available made of woven polyester belts with the cappellini logo.”

Carbon Chair (2004)

If you’ll look closer at this chair, you’ll see there’s no metal frame…it’s completely hand coiled from 100% carbon fiber and epoxy. As Bertjan Pot explains, “Every point on the rim of the chair is connected with all 4 points where the seat is connected to base-frame.”

‘Carbon Chair of Bertjan Pot and Marcel Wanders speaks of dedicated craftsmanship in connection to high tech materials and the material expertise only possible by personal excitement, passion and the love of “enlighted amateurs”.’

Sheep by Sam Brown

These sheep might be just the thing to add a little touch of playfulness to a room.

“Born and bred on the Isle of Wight, although the Sheepskin is from New Zealand. Sheep seats make perfect city pets. There’s no need for a garden and these Sheep seats make great occasional seating with fun personalities. Perfect for adults and kids to sit on, and the child sheep can even be used as a footstool.”

This looks like a good choice if you need bench with storage options for miscellany.

“This exceptionally comfortable bench is perfect in an entryway, living room, or bedroom. But what makes it really special is that this bench is also a coffee table, a storage unit, and a shelf! Solid pine frame houses three drawers to conveniently store anything from gloves and scarves to DVDs, plus a roomy and decorative shelf to store smaller items within easy reach. Smock Chair by Patricia Urquiola

The Smock collection shows such detail and intricacy with fabric yet it has an otherwise modern and simple silhouette…if I had loads of cash, I’d probably already own this or any one of Urquiola’s other pieces, but for now I’ll have to make do by pretending I have my pick.

“patricia urquiola loves playing with textures, as you can see in her smock line of furniture. urquiola bunches up the upholstery around hoops and round frames, giving the smock line a modern look with a rich and almost antique feel.”

I like the idea behind this stool.

“One of the design goals for Turnstone’s Scoop Stool was to avoid competing with the architecture of a space. Inspired by a grain scoop, this casual stool is a perfect compliment to a modern home or business groupspace.”
