Quinze & Milan’s Solo Junior

Finally, some truly modern children’s furniture that’s not too expensive and looks great.

“Resembling abstract building blocks, the Solo Junior, with its bright colors and firm but comfortable foam material, calls out to be sat on, flipped over and climbed upon. A petite scale of a chair designed for the Seattle Public Library, it has a unique shape and makes a startlingly comfortable perch for bodies small and large. Inspired by the modern world’s constant state of flux, Arne Quinze and Yves Milan design furniture that expresses playfulness, creativity, quality, excitement and ingenuity. Made of Quinze & Milan’s proprietary polyurethane foam, which was developed as an alternative to upholstery. The Solo is weather-resistant, nontoxic, recyclable and easy to clean. Suggested age: 3 yrs and up.”

This is a pricy chair but I currently can’t imagine anything prettier. It’s so delicate. I also really like the muted color of the upholstery.

Couchoid Studio Sofa

Blu Dot is one of those companies who can’t seem to misstep; every product they introduce becomes an instant favorite of mine. The new Couchoid upholstery group is no exception. A recessed chrome base makes the solid sofa appear to float, and the dense seat, back, and arms have just enough detail to avoid looking like a big block of foam. The only problem is that I don’t think any pillows would look good on this, so let’s hope it’s as comfortable as it is striking.

Hardwood frame, high density foam. Upholstered in a leather alternative in dark brown,
white, or robin’s egg blue with contrasting stitching.

Spacecube

What a steal- one, two, three or four of these would function quite well as a table/ottoman, and with removable slipcovers, it’d be a cinch to clean up (or change) your living area.

“The latest multifunctional idea from Danish designer Stine Engelbrechtsen is the Space Cube, where simplicity and ingenuity meet in a soft fabric-covered block that can function as a stool, table or ottoman. At 8 lbs, the Space Cube is also light enough to move easily and often, and can be used in multiples, whether in public waiting rooms or in children’s areas where soft surfaces are called for. The cube is resilient yet solid, and is upholstered in a blend of linen and cotton that offers visual texture, a soft hand and enduring strength. The slipcover is easily removable for dry cleaning.”

Cell foam and polyester fiber; upholstery, 74% cotton, 20% viscose, 6% linen.

Available in Anthracite, Brown, Lime or Red Orange.

I B Pop Chair

This is certainly a nice option for seating, though if you live in the U.S., you might have to pay a little bit more for shipping…

“i b pop has such a unique form, because we have taken a single sheet of plastic and turned it into a stunning contemporary chair. i b pop is perfect as a dining or occasional chair and can also bring easy style to any outdoor space. The colour options with a different outside and inside colour are ideally suited for making matching sets or inverted colour combinations. i b pop works well in the contract market as a reception chair or as seating in bars, cafés or clubs.”

Low Cut Stool

I suppose this could be considered the I B Pop chair’s side table and/or coordinating stool, and for the price, it’s worth posting.

“This solid stool or side table (it doesn’t matter what you use it for: It works brilliantly as either.) has a secret. low cut can fold flat in a fraction of a second. Ideal as extra seating you can bring out just when you need it or as outdoor furniture that can be stored away neatly until the weather finally lets you sit outside. When low cut is unfolded it takes up almost no space at all.”

One Chaise

This is a real risk. It’s a little whacky. And it is made of white vinyl. But there’s something that I really like about it. The head cushion is perfect. For the price, it might be worth reupholstering it in a really nice wool felt.

Victoria Sidechair by Philippe Starck

It’s always nice to find a well designed chair under the $300 mark.
“Fashioned in transparent polycarbonate, Starck’s modern interpretation of a baroque-inspired form with the Louis Ghost chair quickly attained icon status, prompting him to design a complementary armless version that’s ideal for dining. A daring example of single-mold injection, these classic Louis XV-style chairs are suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Made by Kartell.”

Luke Sleeper Sofa

Now THIS is inexpensive. The only thing I really don’t like about it is the microfiber upholstery. But I could probably get past that.

Pierrot Sofa Sleeper

This is a great execution of a sleeper sofa with a 77.5″ x 47″ sleeping area. Not only is it easy to convert from day to night mode, but it is also has a removable slip cover.

“In 2004, the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design awarded the Pierrot Sleeper its Good Design Award, an international recognition of innovative product design.”
