Daydream Rug by Twinkle Living

This is the sort of rug that makes you want it no matter the price, because of the following reasons: it’s strange, no one else has it (probably), your guests would spend all sorts of time trying to decipher the imagery (which would give you more time to get the table set/drinks poured, etc.), and it’s black and blue and white, which could act as a neutral in a very tricky* (but delightful) way.

Wire Rug

I’d say these bold brush-like strokes of this black and white rug would add some energy to a room. (Energy as in movement, not like “I can tell you have good energy by your aura…”)

Graphic carbon barbed wire escapes the predictable confines in a freeform contrast on plush linen hand-tufted New Zealand/Indian wool.

Positive/Negative Rug

These two rugs are added to the ever expanding list of things that are too expensive to buy but completely cool enough to wish there were copies/knockoffs (I feel like a traitor to the design world for saying that).

Positive and Negative Rug were designed as a special collection for Kasthall by Swedish designer Björn Dahlström. Both rugs have a pattern of hand written text, which describes the “feelings” of the rug – one with a more positive outlook and the other somewhat more negative – hence the names. The rugs are hand tufted in pure linen, with a white base and navy blue text. The standard size is 170x240cm, other sizes available upon request.

Driade Sheradze Rug

Whoa, I think I love this seemingly spliced-together rug. For those of you in the UK, you’re lucky enough to take advantage of some savings. I didn’t see any available stockists in the US, but please let me know if that’s incorrect.

Designer: Marta Laudani & Marco Romanelli
Dimensions: Width: 200mm* x Depth: 3000mm
(*I think this is supposed to be ‘2000mm’ as that would make the rug about 6.5′ x 9′. I would double check before ordering though, fyi.)

Furoshiki Rug

This rug is spectacular with its rhombic shape and pink/blue/purple/grey color scheme.

In reference to the Japanese wrapping technique, that protects objects for transport, the Furoshiki seams like a folded cloth. The rug’s pattern combines 6 different colours and is produced by hand in 100% wool from New Zealand.

Kid’s Rug by Arzu Firuz

I’m not quite sure what this is made from (wool? felt? maybe even wood??), but it’s pretty cute for the price. And call me crazy, but I wouldn’t say it’s just for kids…if it had ABCs or something then yeah, I’d say for kids, but adults can like animal silhouettes too.

Blue. Measures approximately 38.5″.

Folk Rug

Traditional folk design cropped and updated with a softer palette…absolutely lovely.

Folk emerges from this recovery of the origins and ornamental culture. The collection incorporates floral motifs and borders as a representation of ancestral themes. It feeds on the sobriety of the traditional design of the borders and updates it to suit contemporary environments while maintaining its original folklore. The result is a rug in raw, purple and green shades that take you back to a warm homely atmosphere of legends and mythology.

Michelle Weinberg Rugs

Pretend for a moment that money is no object. Then imagine how one of these rugs would absolutely make a room. Even if you’re not there yet, trust me, it would.

In addition to producing and exhibiting paintings and collage works, artist Michelle Weinberg has transferred her unique aesthetic to the realm of design. She responds to Nature and the built environment with a vocabulary that merges the modern and the folkloric. Pattern provides the vital pulse that animates her imagery, along with vivid color relationships, abstracted typographic forms, and a retro sensibility that permeates her works. Her line of handmade limited edition rugs are produced in Nepal in wool and silk, 100 knots per sq. inch, Rugmark certified (no child labor involved).

Flora Jute Rug

Okay, hear me out: ever since seeing this photo (styled by Laura Fulmine), I’ve kinda liked jute rugs in woven shapes and patterns. Besides, there’s something really nice about natural materials in modern spaces. So, of course I have to post this one, because it’s even crazier than that one from the photo.

Handwoven from natural jute, our Flora rug is a nifty surprise for your floor. Add a bit of organic modernism to your room.

Gunta Stölzl Plate 160 Rug

Originally created on paper at the Bauhaus in the 1920s, this work by Gunta Stölzl is impressive to behold. Realized into being by weaver Jack Lenor Larsen, the design (and price) should perhaps interest you enough to do a little design history research before purchasing.

A notable figure at the Bauhaus, Gunta Stölzl is known for her textiles as well as her leadership as one of the few women to teach at the Bauhaus, and the only woman to hold a senior role on the faculty…she explored ways to “reinvent” weaving and in the process evolved it from craft to industrial design. Fellow student Anni Albers described Stölzl as “having an almost animal feeling for textiles,” and having an affinity for color. (Stölzl credited Paul Klee with opening her eyes to how colors interact with each other.) Her work also shows an understanding of omnidirectional design, in how it is satisfying to approach each rug from any angle. –DWR
