Grip LED Flashlight

Why not employ the same grips of the BMX bicycle to a flashlight? You don’t want to drop it on your toes, after all, especially not in a dark, potentially scary room when there’s no electricity. It’s a practical, tactile solution to sweaty palms.

RestartMilano Lamps

I hesitate to use the word ‘dainty’ to describe these lamps from RestartMilano, mostly because it brings to mind doilies and frail flowers. With their sleek swivel arms and warm brass finish, these lamps are just the opposite, yet the thin silhouette allows for a light (as in, not heavy) touch in any interior, allowing other elements to take center stage. Three versions available: Long Wall Lamp, Short Wall Lamp, and Table Lamp.

Trapeze LED Table Light

Whoa, this lamp is something else. The rounded counterweights are distinctly sculptural, and the 3-axis range of motion means you’ll get an even warm light (thanks to the LEDs) wherever you need it. Aluminum spherical joints allow for fluid-yet-precise movement. On a personal note, my workspace lamp recently bit the dust and I opted to upgrade to the Trapeze- the movement of the arm is pretty fantastic. Wherever you move the head, it stays, which is exactly what is needed from a task light. Two thumbs up.

Doll Lamp

Inspired by the shape of the traditional Japanese ‘Kokeshi Doll‘, this small lamp combines “feminine sensitivity and Foscarini’s technological design research capabilities.” Let’s also say that it’ll be your little lamp friend, shedding light on those dark, lonely nights. The blown glass ‘head’ emits a warm, diffused light while the plastic body allows for several color options. And, as the size comes in at just 8.5″ high and 6.5″ diameter, it can tuck into smaller spots quite well.

Pablo Tube Top Pendant

The Pablo Tube Top lamps have been around for years- before 2007 at least – but this pendant takes the stretcher idea to new heights (so to speak). While the 36″ wide version, shown above, is perfectly proportioned for a rectangular dining area, the smaller 7″ or 14″ could work quite well above a bar or as a pendant above a bedside table.

Array Pendant

Bend has truly excellent seating options in a few lucky shades of pop-out color, so it should be no surprise that they add this extra special spherical pendant to their collection. At 18″ x 22″, it’s the right sort of size for a mid-sized dining area, and the gridded galvanized iron does no harm in casting patterns across a wall. Available in white or fluorescent green/yellow.

Wall Lamp

If you think you’ve seen this light before, you might be thinking of the Bracket Lamp by Dino Sanchez. There’s similarities in the design, of course, but there’s a few distinct details that perhaps explain the price difference. The Bracket Lamp has a permanent intersecting joint and a more streamlined ceramic fixture, while you can see this wall lamp has a removable stub tenon joint and a traditional solid brass socket. Which one is preferable? That’s completely up to you.

Prouvé Potence Lamp

Mainly this lamp has resided in the in-case-I-inherit-money inspiration folder, but if you possess great skills in money management, maybe one day you’ll have one for your very own. Designed by Jean Prouvé in collaboration with Charlotte Perriand in 1950, the Potence lamp provides overhead lighting on a pivoting swivel. The single metal rod extends almost 7 feet from the wall, which allows illumination in a 180-degree range without the fuss of taking up floor space.

Folded Light Art

Lower budgets have the Phrena Lights by Tord Boontje. Mid to higher priced budgets might consider the Folded Light Art of designer Jiangmei Wu. Each light is made from 100 percent recycled cotton paper and is made by using original origami folding techniques that Wu developed. And yes, each shade can be unfolded into flat pieces of paper, though it would be silly to try unless you’re an origami expert.

Night Light Moon, Earth

Night lights aren’t just for little ones afraid of the dark, they can also be exceptionally handy for avoiding toe injury when making late night trips to and from the bathroom or fridge. Night lights are generally geared toward those in the age bracket of 2 years to tween, with many unfortunate cartoon-themed designs available, so these two Moon and Earth options from Kikkerland are nice to see as they’re gender neutral and could go anywhere- yes, a kid’s room, but also a hallway, bathroom, etc..

Scaffolding Floor and Table Lamp

Update: Do you happen to remember the Scaffolding Lamps by Rodger Stevens? Well, check out the current sale prices: Scaffolding Floor Lamp $499.99, Scaffolding Table Lamp $299.99. Quite a discount from the previously listed prices in ’09 (below).

How absolutely wonderful are these lamps by Rodger Stevens? I’ll tell you how wonderful they are: they’re the sort of lamps you’d buy without thinking about how you can’t afford them because they are freaking amazing, that’s how.

Icosahedron Pendant

Yes, it is another icosahedron, that wonderful 20-sided shape that we all know and love, yet this one is in the form of a pendant light- a pendant light handmade in Brooklyn, NY, no less. Now, the retailer is being a little mysterious (or maybe just forgetful) by not listing the actual artist’s name (nor the cooperative), but let’s congratulate the artist for creating this acrylic glass and brushed aluminum beauty. Oh, remember how ‘handmade’ was in italics? That emphasis serves to warn you that this pendant will put a dent in your credit card should you choose to purchase it.

Axis Light

Truly interesting floor lamps are very rarely inexpensive, so prepare yourself for a comma (and an unfortunately placed ‘9’) in this price tag. The Axis Light is made from a solid piece of aluminum tube with two support rods that slide freely, allowing the angle to be adjusted. The lightsource rotates 180° around the main tube.

Cage Lamps

The Cage lighting collection designed by Arik Levy for Forestier combines the industrial aspect of protective cage light fixtures with traditional paper lanterns (a more obvious iteration is found in the In & Out Lamp small and large). This opposites-attract formula results in a successful pairing that is surprisingly elegant, and as a result this collection has moved to the top of the wish-this-was-available-statside list.

Hank Lamp

A wall lamp with a coat hook? Sure, why not? After all, an extra hook for hanging a hat by the front door could come in handy, or maybe it’d be useful in a dressing area, where all manner of accessories and outfits need adequate lighting for your fashion decisions. (If you’ve ever heard the ‘did you get dressed in the dark’ jab, that last bit was directed at you.)
