IC S Pendant Light

Seeing as the Flos sale began yesterday (ends March 19), it’s particularly fitting to feature the IC S Pendant Light by Michael Anastassiades. The original inspiration for the IC collection was the skillful way in which a juggler spun a set of spheres around his/her body, and, indeed, it’s easy to feel the off-centered balance and slight tension of each lamp. There’s the suspension lamp, featured here, as well as the IC C/W Wall Ceiling Light, the IC F Floor Lamp, and the IC T1 High and IC T2 Table Lamp.

Switchmate

Now you can be really, truly lazy, because Switchmate automates your standard light switch, no screwdrivers required. Snap Switchman over your existing switch, pair it with your smartphone, and then turn your lights on and off without ever leaving the sofa. When you do eventually leave the house, you can turn on your lights before you arrive home, thus avoiding any dark entryways (and potential tripping hazards). It’s held on by magnets, so it’s just about the easiest installation you’ll ever have, and, if you’re a renter, you can simply snap off your Switchmates to take them with you when you move.

I Ricchi Poveri – Silver Bzzzz

What’s with Ingo Maurer and flying things? Who cares? Because pretty much all of it is amazing, and that includes this table lamp with a delicate handmade silver-coated aluminum dragonfly resting on a bulb. Prepare yourself for a price tag punch, though, as it’s not cheap (you should know this as ‘handmade’ was in front of ‘silver-coated’ and ‘aluminum dragonfly’) and you might just have to put it in your wish list folder until you get a spectacular raise. Oh, and if you really like the whole insects-on-a-light-bulb lighting option, do be sure to take a look at Ingo Maurer’s Johnny B. Butterfly Pendant Light as well as his JB Schmetterling Pendant Light.

Beam Smart Projector

Screw the Beam Smart Projector into a light socket and then use your smartphone to watch movies, play games, or share content. That’s right, it’s a projector built into a compact casing that fits into a light socket. Maybe you’ll put it above the kitchen island to watch a food prep video directly on the counter, or above the dining table to play games, or maybe you’ll prefer to place it on a table (with included power cable) for projecting onto the wall or ceiling for movies and videos. You can also program Beam to run certain ‘if this then that’ rules, which opens up a lot of fun options for you and your family. Check it out over at Kickstarter.

Little Bishop Ceiling Hook

Here’s a worthy pursuit: design a better option for placing light fixtures. Yes, you could call an electrician and spend hundreds of dollars. You could also buy a cheap brass hook and knot your cord’s fixture to keep it in place. Neither are ideal, but both are entirely feasible. Now you can add one more possibility to the mix. The Little Bishop Ceiling Hook aims to provide a hook specifically for cable hung pendant lights. This hook is shaped and cast by hand, with an elegant solution to wrap the cord around itself for a seamless installation. It might not fit every lighting situation, but for more temporary solutions on pendant light placement, it’s seems like a smart choice.

Daphine Floor Lamp Classic Reading Lamp

What is that floor lamp that keeps showing up in Vincent Van Duysen’s interiors? Why, I was wondering the same thing, as the name wouldn’t quite make itself known amongst the other many products committed to memory. It’s the Daphine Floor Lamp Classic Reading Lamp by Tommaso Cimini, and, yes, I kind of want one too. In production since 1975, the Daphine Terra Classic has a small shade and delicate joints offset by a chunkier base. Its light spreads overly wide, and is adjustable in two steps. While I’d opt for the black (as Van Duysen does), there’s also a white and nickel-plated option.

Dandelight by Studio Drift

This is another wonderful sort of object we featured years ago (2008) and now deserves an update. Lonneke Gordijn of Studio Drift first started gluing dandelion seeds to LEDs a decade ago, and I think it’s now safe to say that the Dandelight is now somewhat of a design classic, made all the more certain by the MoMA Store offering it up for sale.

Each seed is attached, one by one, to the LED light. Held aloft by a thin copper stem, the light is powered by a very visible 9 volt battery. Perhaps this could go into your ‘excellent gifts to give’ category? And, if you’re fond of this light, do be sure to take a look at Studio Drift’s Fragile Future III light sculpture.

Neon Light by Minimalux

Have your own Dan Flavin-esque light sculpture by getting one of these Neon Lights designed by London based MINIMALUX. A bright, radiant glow is made visible from the colorful interiors of a folded steel box, giving off the impression of neon strip lights. Group several together for a bigger lighting statement or just pick one for a quieter glow.

Dot Wall Light

There’s nothing complicated about the Dot Light from Lambert & Fils; it’s just a handmade brass disc with plenty of nylon wire to hardwire it onto a wall (or specify a rocker switch and plug). However, the size of the circular base makes the warm reflection of the bulb more visible and entirely more elegant (in a subtle Hollywood glamour sort of way).

Tribeca Franklin Chandelier

A little brass, a dash of branch-like design… put them together and it’s enough to make you want to assemble your own Adelman Chandelier. However, if putting together a semi-complicated light isn’t your thing, then, not to worry, Søren Rose Studio will hook you up with the Tribeca series, or, more specifically, the Tribeca Franklin Chandelier. Retro-chic? Certainly. A lighting statement? Most definitely. Also be sure to take a look at the Tribeca Leonard Chandelier, the Tribeca Reade Table Lamp, and the Warren Wall Lamp.

OK Lamp

You know what’s cool? A floor to ceiling LED light designed by none other than Konstantin Grcic. I swear, I want everything he’s designed, and this ultra-flat light disk hung from a wire is currently at the top of my list (if only I had a place to put it). The light is directable over 360 degrees, so use it as a reading light in the living or bedroom, or just hang it in a corner for an ambient light source. A cone-shaped counterweight keeps it in place.

Foundry Floor Light

Save your dollar bills (or your tax refund) because Resident Studio has a few new lighting options available. The Foundry Floor Light by Nat Cheshire, shown above, stands at 6 feet 2 inches high and has a minimal rectangular frame. The LED light source shines warm light onto the hand-cast bronze base, providing ambient light in a large, vertical visual space. The entire impression is more sculptural object than useful light source, but, hey, in this case, it can be both.

Prism Pendants

It is always a relief to see affordable lighting options, especially in these days of over-the-top-wondrous designs that cost more than a new car. The Prism Pendants hit the right note as they are very budget friendly ($99 – $129) and have geometric brass frames with glass panels. Add one or two to a hallway, bar area, or powder room for an instant update.

Triangle and Line Light by Fort Makers

What the what?! A triangular line light is just what these dreary and dark evenings need, and, if you’re lucky enough to have several hundred dollars, you might want to check out the Walnut Line Light by Fort Makers as well. Either (or both) would scratch any minimally-designed lighting needs you may have, as it’d be hard not to fall a little in love with such spare graphic designs executed with such precision.

JWD Concrete Lamp

That dark area of your living room might need a small sort of table lamp, and maybe this one by Swedish designer Jonas Wagell will fit the bill (and the budget). A smooth concrete base with a brass switch contrasts nicely with a delicate glass shade. At 11.4″ high and a 6.7″ diameter, it can easily fit on a small side table, console, or bookcase to provide soft, ambient lighting.
