Fire Extinguisher Pendant Lamps

As you’ve ascertained from the title, these lamps are made from spent fire extinguisher canisters. By using either the top or bottom of the canister the shape is cylindrical or rounded, and each one is hand painted with a slight black/grey effect. Not a bad way to make use of an otherwise discarded item, and it certainly lends itself to a nice ‘guess what this used to be’ discussion at your next dinner party.

Clutch Floor Lamp

If you look closely, you’ll see that there’s no hinges or finicky hardware on this floor lamp. Well, what magic is this? Magnets, of course. Magnets allow you to arrange these two lights on this white oak floor lamp in various ways, without the normal visual clutter. Each light dome has its own on/off floor switch as well.

Noir Pendant Lamp

The Noir Pendant lamp, which is a powdercoated black matte metal shade with a beech wood cap has a weighty, architectural look to it. With its large scale, the fixture would be most suited as an anchor for a dining table or perhaps a kitchen island.

Binic Table Lamp

The Binic Table Lamp has long been on my admired list, but I had no idea that it was so petite. Measuring just 8″ in height, it was intended as more of a ‘take-away’ item, and its easy to move scale provides a very personal sized light. Designer Ionna Vautrin was inspired by windsocks on boats, and if she had to define the lamp in three words, she would say it is “cute, colorful, and small.” Take a look at the video below to see Vautrin discuss the lamp and its inspiration.

Scantling Lamps

Ouch. These are pricey, yet oh-so-striking. Designed by Mathias Hahn, arms and hinges allow the shade to fully rotate without the need of springs or counterweights. And what does ‘scantling’ mean? It is “a term used to define the size to which a piece of wood or stone is measured and cut, derived from the name of an old unit of measurement.” There you go. There’s also a Scantling Wall Light, too, though I haven’t yet seen a retailer offer the ceiling light, which is very impressive.

Void Mini Pendant Light

If you like Tom Dixon’s Void Pendant Light, you’ll be happy to see there’s a new mini version. Whether you mix the sizes or just use the mini to fit smaller areas (powder or dressing room perhaps?), you’ll have a polished metal gem that won’t go out of style (ever – that’s a promise).

Bracket Lamp

There’s no hiding the cord on this wall lamp by Dino Sanchez. Indeed, it’s the cord that is the lamp, along with a solid oak bracket. I love the blackened oak version, shown below, but there’s several combinations to choose from. Handcrafted in Massachusetts.

Linear and Mizuu Light

Have you seen these lamps by Melissa Moore? They’re slightly scientific looking (tubes + lights) and perhaps that’s why they stand out. I particularly like the Stick Lamp and the Linear 2.0, shown above and below.

Menorah by Josh Owen

How about a hefty menorah? This one by Josh Owens is made of solid cast iron and has an integrated tray to catch wax drippings (or a used match). Happy Hanukkah!

Also, if you’re looking for a menorah, take a look at the Jewish Museum Shops… they’ve got plenty of good ones.

Sale: Match Candleholders

Update: These are now on sale from $75.00 to $18.75! Craziness.

This is so smart. These candleholders have a vent for a match, eliminating the burnt finger scenario that often occurs with tealights. As I’ve caught the holiday-gift bug, it’s necessary to mention they’d be a good present option, no matter the event or recipient. Actually, on second thought, that might get you into trouble. Maybe make sure the recipient is somewhat interested in decor/candles, then it’s a safe bet. One set includes 4 Candleholders.

AudioBulb

Hmm, an AudioBulb. It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a light bulb that has a speaker in it. It’s an LED light bulb, of course, so it’ll last for years (as it should be if you’re shelling out a Franklin for it). Music plays wirelessly from your iPod/iPhone/auxiliary input source and installation is simple. Twist in the AudioBulb in a lamp or a light socket and then connect your device to the standalone base. You can have up to 8 bulbs and 2 different zones. Sounds like a pretty good idea, doesn’t it?

Swedish Snowflake Lantern

This is just about the perfect holiday decoration, mostly because it’s not an in-your-face sort of thing, and it would give off a nice glow. If I had to choose between spending $85 on a nice paper lantern that looked like a snowflake and one free horrible singing Santa, I’d shell out $85 so fast that you’d think (insert idiom here*). There’s also a Star Lantern, shown below.

Rotor Pendant from Shades of Light

Say hello to our new sponsor, Shades of Light. Out of their vast array of unique lighting, rugs, furniture, etc., this pendant stands out for its materials: it’s made from repurposed automotive rotors. Industrial simplicity is always nice to see, especially when reclaimed parts are involved.

Led Anglepoise Lamp

Designer Henry Wilson takes the classic and ubiquitous anglepoise lamp and updates it with both technology and handcrafted elements. First the lamp itself is rewired for a cooler and more efficient LED bulb, then, either a ceramic or glass shade replaces the original. This is an extremely limited edition of 20, and will sell for $940. However, for $670 you can also supply your own anglepoise lamp to be updated by Wilson. I’d rather not mix up any words or intent, so here is the designer’s statement on Led Anglepoise in his own words: (more…)

Rich Brilliant Willing Lamp at UO

Hrm. After the recent Urban Outfitters debacle (you know the one), it’s a bit hazy as to whether one should patronize the shop, yet it’s unavoidable to feature this lamp by none other than Rich Brilliant Willing. You know they did some store fixtures (via designboom), but actual exclusive lighting at a price point under $100? I had no idea.
