Pancake & Franks Box Sets

Despite the trend of emailing/social networking/texting a ‘happy birthday’ or ‘get well’, nothing really beats an actual handwritten card. When did you last handwrite a note on a card? If it’s been sometime in the past 3 months, well done. If not, time to remedy the situation with a box of cards to fit every event. If you’ve got several cards on hand, you can quickly whip out the right one, jot down your message, stick it in an envelope and you’re done. No trips to the local stationery supplier necessary. I like the look of Pancake & Franks offerings, especially as they’ve three different sets from which to choose.

Evolution Erasers

Regardless of your thoughts on our original ancestors, this eraser does a clever job of making an ordinary desk eraser into a small sculpture. Modern Homo sapiens is at one end, and a monkey on the other; it can be sliced into segments to show the different stages or even used as an ink stamp, if you wish. Or, just use as usual and slowly watch as one end gets worn down into the other.

Tetu Cast Iron Tape Dispenser

At times it might seem as if there’s a slight disposition on this site to feature the more expensive items available in the marketplace, however, know that this tape dispenser by Makoto Koizumi is one of today’s picks primarily for its design and weight. Cast iron would ensure a one handed operation (one can assume) and the design is naturally minimal. Also, if you’re interested, Makoto Koizumi also designed a simple cast iron Tetu door stopper and paper weight that has the form of a rounded stone (see below).

Eco Highlighter Yellow

Highlight those presentation notes without bleeding through the page, and minus the fumes. The Eco Highighter Yellow is a dry alternative to highlighter markers. I have a feeling a plain yellow colored pencil would work too, but this one does have eco-cred; it uses no ink solvents, no volatile organic compounds, and is fully biodegradable.

STRIP tape dispenser

Hmm, I’m not sure how functional this dispenser is compared to a traditional version, but it sure beats the heck out of it in terms of interest. Made from die-cut aluminum, you hold the dispenser in one hand while pulling/cutting with the other (see note above regarding functionality). It’s certainly minimal, and has the ‘ooo, what’s that’ factor.

Eraser Brush

Why-oh-why does the local art supply shop not have this in stock? An eraser on one end of a solid wood block, and a natural hair brush to sweep away the rubbings… it makes so much sense, and is so simple and utilitarian (=lovely) that you’d think it’d be a no brainer to have a big box of them available. If anyone sees a U.S. retailer carrying this, please let me know.

Up Filer Universal Vertical Filing Rack

What better way to start off a Monday than with a filing rack? After all, filing papers is the most exciting thing in the world*, so therefore, anything to help that lovely job go faster/better is worth a gander. This filing rack differs from most in that it is a wall mounted vertical storage rack, which allows files and other flat content to vary by size yet still remain visible. Labels are located at the bottom of files, allowing for a quick visual scan, and the pivoting hanger allows for easy addition and removal of items. If you work with different sizes of paper/artwork, this could be a very smart storage solution.

Measuring Tape Tape

Oh, how useful this would be (which is why the Museum of Useful Things stocks it, I suppose). This yellow paper tape is printed with a markings every 1/8 of an inch, and is perforated at the end of each foot. When it comes to measuring boxes, furniture, and whatever else, I’d vote for this tape to be my tool of choice. It would stay put and allow accurate measurements.

Made in the USA.
