Every once in a while there’s a furniture or accessory item that makes me wish I had a totally empty house, just so I could start with one piece and build outwards, completely tailoring the whole house around one single aesthetic. Ethnicraft’s Oak Blackbird Sideboard is one of those pieces, to be sure, as its black outline neatly delineates its stack of natural oak doors, compartments and drawers. How could one be messy with this sideboard sitting in one’s dining or living room? (I’m sure you’ll try, but I’ll roll my eyes and shake my finger at you if I see even one little paper out of place.)

Need more storage space for paperwork? You could get a ho-hum boring rolling file from an office supply store, or you could shell out a little more dough for one that actually looks like a fair amount of design thought went into its creation. Ethnicraft’s Universo Positivo collection has caught our eye before, and their Billy II Box stands out for its combination of solid oak and lacquered stainless steel. One of the more exciting things to happen in the furniture retail world this month is the arrival of Commune’s collection over at West Elm. I won’t bother with talking about how this represents a shift in design sense or quality, because hopefully that will knock you over the head once you look at the pieces up close. The piece I’m most excited about is the Storage Bench, mostly because it has a mid century vibe with its black and white sliding doors and removable leather cushion. You’ll most likely see the rest of the collection (at least the Sling Chair and Marble-Topped Coffee Table) featured here on our site over the next couple of weeks, as they’re great deals to be had*.

Does this shelving remind you a tiny bit of the New Order Shelving by Stefan Diez? Maybe a little? It’s similar in that it has dividers and optional panels that can be moved around to suit your preferences. Set your mind to modular mode, and you’ll see that the Plus collection is a solution to your storage woes. Three concrete cubes can be combined in different ways to make furniture; there’s a single storage cube that can also be used as a seat, a longer bench, and a larger square table. Build a bookcase, a console, or just have one as a side table and/or seat. I know, shelving is rarely exciting, but this shelving system sort of is. The shelves are made from aluminum- nothing new, I know- but these shelves can be up to 2 meters (>6′) long and they’ll support books and other weighty items, unlike some of the lesser quality aluminum shelves that bend and/or dent under the slightest stack of books.

There’s also an option of open or closed units, back panels, side panels, and folding doors that allow you to customize the look you need. Hide away what you don’t want to see, leave open other areas for display and easy access. There are quite a few colors as well, which just makes everyone happier.

This isn’t your normal bookcase, as it doesn’t have solid shelves. Instead it’s composed of 12 wooden frames, all open in the middle. Books may still be balanced over the frames, of course, but other possibilities arise when considering the use of the middle space; things like planters or containers can hang from the frames, thus enabling you to create a versatile bookcase or room divider. When packed, all the wooden frames fit together to create a long, flat, easy-to-ship box.
