Stools

Rocket Stool

The well known Eero Aarnio designed this three-legged stool in 1995, and, as you can tell, it hints at his other work with its rounded (“plump“) seat and legs. Interestingly enough, the Rocket was originally designed for Eero Aarnio’s own kitchen, though it’d do just as well in other rooms. The solid wood stool is available in oak wood painted white, black or soaped, and in two different sizes, Rocket Stool ($435) and Baby Rocket ($300).

Riki Stool

Whoa, considering we first posted the Riki Stool over 6 years ago, it’s time for an update. Designed by Riki Watanabe in 1965, this stool is made of cardboard, which allows it to be lightweight and very strong- it can take the weight of over 1,000 pounds. No tools needed for assembly, you just need a few folds to create a comfortable seat.

Biscuit Stool

Pay attention and you’ll see the charm in this stool designed by outofstock. The seat is gently curved so it’s easy on the thighs and criss-crossed dowels ensure that the legs stay sturdy- all this with no screws. Another little tidbit: this stool was inspired by traditional wooden stools seen at a Singapore fish market.

A Tempo Stool

Remember this guy? Designer Pauline Deltour worked with steel wire to create a few pieces for Alessi a few years ago, one of which is this little “A Tempo” Stool. Nice, isn’t it? The other pieces in the “A Tempo” collection include the Laundry Basket and the Umbrella Stand).

Sway Stools

How fun are these? I know it’s hard to think ‘fun’ when it’s the first day back from a long holiday weekend, but put on your regular design-appreciative hat and you’ll see I’m right. They’re on sale now from Plastica- 50% off!- so pick up one or two or twelve for a few extra swaying seats. Each stool is hollow and filled with dry sand for ballast.

Braided Stools

Furniture is rarely ‘fun’ with a capital F, but there’s not many words more appropriate to describe these Braided Stools by Debra Folz. Each stool is CNC cut to accommodate traditional leather weaving techniques, and the result is a fresh take on textural adornment. Choose between 6 available leather colors (may be combined in the case of the bi-color bench as shown above) and three different woods.

Aalto stool 60, Rings

Another anniversary stool? Sure, let’s have it. Alvar Aalto’s three legged Stool 60 turns 80 this year, and we’ve already seen a few other versions that piqued our collective interest. Nao Tamura’s version is decorated with the growth rings of a tree, 80 rings to be exact, and the size of the rings are never the same. Unfortunately, it appears that no US retailer carries it. Sad for those of us here in the US, not so sad for those of you on the UK side of the world.

Tilt Stool

An earlier iteration of this stool by Justin Gologorsky had a foam covering and was more than twice the current price, so I’d say this updated version is worth a look or two. The Tilt Stool has a gentle curve to its base, allowing you to keep your core muscles engaged by rocking back and forth. Turn it on its side and it becomes a stable seat or side table. It’s made of plastic, so don’t limit yourself to indoors- think patio or poolside.

Stool One vs. Kaysa

It seems like everyone has an opinion on knock-offs these days, and personally, I always sympathize with the original designer. In my own home, we save up for the licensed versions of whatever piece we love, but I do realize that many people just can’t afford to do so and will sacrifice provenance and, at times, quality for a similar look. Which brings us to the matter at hand: Konstantin Grcic’s Stool One vs. the Kaysa Bar Stool.

Delta Stool

This stool seems to reference the prevalent wire base legs of the mid century, and indeed, its three large hairpin legs give structure to the modern day design. No hardware or adhesives are used, as the legs interlock for strength. Use as extra seating or as a side table anywhere you need an additional surface.

Smith Storage Cart

Yes, we posted this years ago (2008!), but this multipurpose unit is still pretty impressive. It serves as a detachable file cabinet, a stool, a rolling cart and, in multiples, even stackable shelves. It’s also recyclable once the plastic wheels are removed, though for the price, you’d be better off selling it to a fellow design aficionado.

This Stool Rocks

Would you like to back another Kickstarter campaign? How about a ready-to-assemble rocking stool? Three options allow for three different rocking motions, and, best of all, the stools can be made in a city close to you and shipped with minimal charge- instead of overseas. And, if you want to make the stool yourself (and have access to a CNC machine), you can download the CAD file for free.
