Stool 60, Anniversary Edition

If you get a little heart flutter anytime anyone mentions Alvar Aalto, you might just need to add a special anniversary edition of the Stool 60 to your furniture collection. The two pictured above and the variations below are colorful alternatives to the original birch version ($260). Info and links below.

Smith Storage Cart

Yes, we posted this years ago (2008!), but this multipurpose unit is still pretty impressive. It serves as a detachable file cabinet, a stool, a rolling cart and, in multiples, even stackable shelves. It’s also recyclable once the plastic wheels are removed, though for the price, you’d be better off selling it to a fellow design aficionado.

This Stool Rocks

Would you like to back another Kickstarter campaign? How about a ready-to-assemble rocking stool? Three options allow for three different rocking motions, and, best of all, the stools can be made in a city close to you and shipped with minimal charge- instead of overseas. And, if you want to make the stool yourself (and have access to a CNC machine), you can download the CAD file for free.

Milking Stool by UM Project

It’s a little dreary outside, and a Monday at that, so a jolt of color is called for. Available in black, grey, white, teal, yellow, saffron and pink, this Milking Stool by UM Project could be extra seating or a side table, your call. It is intended to follow the proportions of a classic milking stool- lower legs and a narrow footprint- but if you prefer a sturdier option, it looks like they have an alternate version in the Holy Stool.

Hitch Peacock Blue Stool

Glossy peacock blue might just be the jolt of color that’s needed for the semi-dreary days of February, and hey, an extra seat for $170 is reasonably affordable considering it’s made of iron and acacia wood. It certainly won’t get wobbly or fall apart, which is more than you can say for other assembly-required seating. A small cutout in the seat makes it easy to move around.

Drifted Stool

If you lack adequate seating in your living or work quarters, do take a long look at this stool designed by Lars Beller. A gently curved cork seat (sustainably harvested, of course) makes for a comfortable spot to rest your derrière and the legs are painted a nice, rich red. If you’re interested in other sizes or colors, the Italian furniture manufacturer Discipline is where you’ll want to investigate options. Also, designboom has several nice photos of the collection, fyi.

Imo Folding Stool

I’ve seen this in person and it truly is a lovely little stool. Perfect for tight spots, it folds down the middle so that it can be stored easily on the wall and free up valuable floor space. It’s not the least expensive stool, of course, but the craftsmanship is entirely apparent.

Cork Family

Lest we forget, Jasper Morrison’s Cork Family is a smart choice for any living area. Each piece could be a side table or stool and is light enough to move around easily. Cork is also pretty tough, so you wouldn’t need to be too precious with keeping it away from kids. Available in 3 different styles (and yes, they’re priced individually).

Pilot Stool

Quinze & Milan’s Pilot Stool is notable not only for its curved (and seemingly comfortable) seat, but also for its new method of fabrication. Polypropylene foam is utilized in a special manufacturing technique (see below video) to create a glossy-yet-matte surface. The oak legs thread onto the seat, making the stool easy to ship and assemble. Available in three different height variations: standard, kitchen, and bar.

ErgoErgo

You know how a Yoga/Fitness Ball is supposed to be better for you to sit on because it engages your core muscles? That’s all fine, but they’re a little unsightly for some interiors, not to mention huge when in a small office space. Therein lies the market for the ErgoErgo: it allows for the same sitting experience in a more acceptable stool design. The body can rock gently in any direction, and, as the ErgoErgo is filled with air, the height may be adjusted slightly to accommodate your preference.

Aluminum Eiffel Stool

First off, the $150 price is for the kid-sized version, but, that said, $225 isn’t too bad of a price for an aluminium (or, as us Americans would say, aluminum) stacking stool. The Eiffel stool can easily live indoors or out, and do check out the image below of the stools stacked 5 high (space saving!), and see if that doesn’t impress you the tiniest bit more.

milk stools by alissia melka-teichroew

You might know Alissia Melka-Teichroew for her acrylic rings or the Inside Out glassware from a while ago, and now you can add this off-kilter stool to her list of successes. Would you have guessed she was inspired by crooked slats in a picket fence? By combining the asymmetry of the fence with the irregularity of the old-fashioned one-legged milk stool, she arrived at this sturdy and expressive design.

Spin Stool, Colors

Simon posted the stackable Spin Stool by Swedese back in May, and now that it’s available in a handful of fresh and lovely colors it’d be a shame not to shine a light on them again. Made from laminated ash veneer, the Spin Stool now comes in grey, yellow, pink, orange, and blue.

Plywood Void Stool

This isn’t new, but it still is a stand out piece. Designed by Ron Gilad (Designfenzider) in 2003, this stool/end table is quite the thing to have in your home. Leave the space empty and enjoy the inside/outside silhouette or use it for storage- it looks great with books in it.

Spin Stool by Swedese

Swedish furniture producers Swedese pays homage to the classic Alvar Aalto stacking stools in function and spirit, but with a new spin (get it?) on aesthetics. Many prototypes and experiments resulted in laminated veneer legs bending in two directions, giving the stationary stool a spiraling motion. Spin Stools are made to order with an 8-10 week lead time.
