Besides being easy on the eye, this chair from e15 is also worth noting for its construction method: it’s completely screwless. Made from 4mm thin oak-veneered plywood, the Houdini Chair is both visually and physically light and perfectly complements all e15 tables. There’s several photos showing how it’s constructed (The Making Of), which is as fascinating as it is laborious.

Luckily, there’s a collection by Stefan Diez, of which the Armchair, Lounge, and Stool particularly stand out.

Remember my little speech last week about adding more classics into the BLTD mix? Well, here it is Thursday and time for another piece deemed classic by many a mid century fan.

Charles and Ray Eames are quite famous for their experimentation in wood-molding techniques and their success in creating high-quality furniture that could be mass produced. The Plywood Group, to which this dining chair belongs, is made from a process that eliminates extraneous wood, which lightens each chair’s visual profile and weight. The seat and back are molded to fit the body, making these chairs a comfortable seating option. You might also be interested to know, if you don’t already, that this chair is in the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art and in my own dining room (link).

The Eames Molded Dining Chair is available with either chromed tubular steel or wood base frames (DCM – Dining Chair Metal – or DCW – Dining Chair Wood).

No doubt you’re somewhat familiar with MUJI’s range of office furniture (and if you aren’t, it would do you well to take a gander), but you might be interested to know that the Steel Pipe Chair is on sale now from $630 to $479… not too bad for a possible future classic. The chair’s design is based on the original Bauhaus design and made in Germany by Thonet GmbH.

Hmm, $219 seems awfully affordable for a dining chair, especially considering there’s a nice balance of wood and steel. Made to pair with the Copine Dining Table ($799), the chair is available in American walnut or oak.

Talk about a thin folding chair, this one by Christian Desile is less than an inch thick when closed. Maybe you like the sustainable bamboo, or maybe you’d like the Black/White Laminate ($375) which can be opened up either way so you can choose the preferred color (see pic below). Also worth mentioning is that the chair can be hung on the wall when closed as a sort of graphic wood artwork (if it’s to your taste). What’s most impressive though is that 100 chairs closed and stacked side by side takes up only 2 linear meters.

Behold the Flux foldable armchair by Douwe Jacobs and Tom Schouten. Made from a single piece of recyclable polypropylene, the Flux transforms from a flat, self-contained “envelope” into an armchair. In ten seconds. Pretty neat. Available mid-November in lots of colors.

So, this little chair was launched in Milan this year and has now just hit the shelves, so to speak. Produced with the same blow molding technique used to manufacture water bottles, the hollow spaces of the chair are filled with high pressure air to strengthen the design. Plastic usage is minimal this way and the chair ends up weighing in around 1kg. The legs can be unscrewed from the shell as well.

Made of 100% PET (i.e. fully recyclable)

Have you seen these wooden hand sculpted chairs by Veronika Wildgruber? Note that I inserted ‘hand sculpted’ right off the bat so you wouldn’t expect big box store prices. All three chairs (more shown below) are limited editions, so you might want to get a move on if you’re interested. Wildgruber’s Wood Bulb Lights (£150/light) are also worth checking out.

You are probably familiar with the regular 4 legged Ant Chair, but take a look at the 3 leg version. I think the shape of the chair looks a little more interesting with only 3 legs to balance on, and considering it’s slightly less expensive than its sibling, this guy might just be the one to go for.

The outlines of the three chairs that inspired the design of this chair weren’t immediately apparent to me, and it was only after noticing such that I began to see it in a non-alien-like way. Seeing that owning a 7 Chair by Arne Jacobsen ($466), a Tulip Armchair by Eero Saarinen ($1,390), and an Eiffel Chair designed by Charles Eames ($249) will run you approximately 2 grand, this chair’s price could be considered a steal.

Tanya Aguiniga transforms the surface of cold metal folding chairs into thick upholstered seating with hand-wrought felt. Each are made to order, so expect a 2-4 week wait.

So, these green chairs stood out quite a bit when I ran across this photo the other day and habit proved unavoidable. A quick lookup to see if my memory served correct and surprise, surprise they weren’t quite the chairs (see #1) I thought they were. Now, onto the questions regarding the two chairs on the right:

a) which one do you think was made first?
b) which one costs less?
c) which one has removable legs?
