Dining and Side Chairs

Nerd Chair

If the name’s not enough to make you look twice, take a close look at the seat and back join. There’s some pretty precise curves involved and a rather appealing humbleness in terms of scale and treatment. This chair used to be only available in the UK/Europe area, but now all of us in the states can order one without paying extra overseas shipping costs. Designed by David Geckeler for Muuto.

Vitra Tip Ton Chair

This solid plastic chair has a forward-tilt action that will help your health apparently: it straightens the pelvis and spine and thus improves circulation to the abdominal and back muscles. Whether that influences your decision to buy one, many, or none at all, I do have to say it has a nice silhouette that would work well in a dining room or office area. Plus, it’s stackable and comes in 6 different colors. On sale until October 24th.

Clutch Dining Chair

If you need an extra seat or two around your dining table, think about adding this new armchair from Blu Dot. The curved back with a little cushioning gives a more regal appearance, and you know you’ll be comfortable with a place to rest your arms. Several colors to choose from, with either white ash or smoke on ash wood.

Hee Chair & Barstool

It’s been nine years since the Hee Seating Collection first hit the market, but it looks just as good now as it did back in 2004. Designer Hee Welling was originally inspired by the interior of a refrigerator, but you won’t find that on Hay’s site anymore, as the many other attributes of the seating collection have the spotlight. The chairs are made from galvanized solid steel, with outdoor powder coating that withstands weather throughout the year. They’re stackable, with a floor linking connection, and even cushions, if needed (contact HAY for availability). All that with the simple, perfect design and you’ve got yourself an excellent option for seating wherever you might need it.

Era Round Armchair

There’s nothing wrong with a little Thonet in your life/home/office, especially as the bentwood chairs have been in production for more than 150 years and still look at home in many a modern setting. One current promotion gives you a break if you buy four of the Era Chairs or Era Round Armchairs– 20% off. So, if you’re wanting a few for a breakfast nook or a full set of 8 or 12 (lucky you that you have a large dining room), now’s a pretty good time. Details below.

Industry Chair

Well, $199 for a minimal steel chair isn’t so bad, especially when you consider the price of a visual equivalent like the Emeco 20-06 Stacking Chair. Now, this one isn’t made from recycled aluminum, and it doesn’t stack, and sure, that’s a little disappointing, but you will have $376 left in your pocket, which means you can buy a second chair and some friends groceries.

Comback Chair

It feels like this chair was on the wait list forever, and now, finally, at last it’s available to purchase here in the US. Before, we linked to the UK retailer Utility, but now Hivemodern carries all three versions: 4 leg, Swivel, and Sled base. The Comback chair is Patricia Urquiola’s updated version of the classic Windsor chair, with a single mold plastic form for functionality and bright colors to make it thoroughly modern.

Edge Stackable Chair

One glance at all the surface planes on this aluminum chair and it’s easy to see how it was inspired by the art of origami. Sure, it doesn’t fold (like some other aluminum chairs) but considering the nice profile we’ll settle for the stackable option. Each chair takes around eight hours to manufacture- that helps explain the price tag- and can be used indoors or out. An optional seat pad is also available.

The Camp Chair

Whether you use this chair for an actual camping trip or just as an extra seat around the house, you’ll no doubt be pleased with its materials and hardware. It holds up to 350lbs and collapses completely to packable/stackable dimensions (18 x 5 x 21″), and if you’d prefer a stool, just fold the back down over the seat (see image below).

Lockwood Chair by Misewell

Remember this chair from Misewell? Thought it might be time for a reminder post, as there’s been a price adjustment since 2010. With a wood seat and steel back, comfort doesn’t spring to mind, but apparently this chair is quite comfortable, even without the optional felt back pad. Plus, it’s supposed to ensure good posture- we could all benefit from that.

Lucinda Stacking Chair

Sometimes a simple café chair is all you need, especially if you’re on a tight budget. This powdercoated iron chair can live indoors or out and stacks to save space. For $70 you could do a whole lot worse, that’s for sure. Choose between a hi-gloss white or the very brave, bright orange.

Ru Chair

This chair isn’t new, in fact, it’s been around for a couple of years, but for some reason we’ve missed featuring it. Designed by Shane Schneck for Hay, this chair has a cantilever design that allows for easy stacking. Perhaps more impressively, the lack of two front legs means the seat of the chair can be suspended on a table for easy floor cleaning (see image at designboom). A cross lamination layering pattern gives the Ru Chair “exceptional” strength.

Hot Mesh Chair

Another fantastic indoor/outdoor seating option, this chair from Blu Dot features a mesh pattern of powder-coated steel. Perhaps the mesh would keep our backs and bottoms cool when enjoying the out-of-doors? Also, be sure to note these chairs are stackable, and have an affordable price tag to boot.

Copper Real Good Chair

Hello, hello. Blu Dot’s Real Good Chair ($139) is now available in a copper plated finish. There’s been a recent popularity of copper accents in the home, and if you’re going to jump on that boat, you might as well be brave about it and get a chair or two (or six). As you probably know, copper patinas naturally, so expect an aged look after you’ve had the chair(s) for a while.

Standard Chair

Is this an affordable alternative to Prouvé’s Standard Chair ($935) or what? Answer: Yes, indeed it is. To be clear, in theory, knock-offs or “reproductions” aren’t the best choice if you can afford the original designs, but if an original is way out of your price range, then it’s certainly forgivable. In this case, $325 is way easier on the wallet than $935, especially if you consider ordering multiples ($325 x 4 = $1,300; $935 x 4 = $3,740).
