If you have a need for coasters, at least make them decent to look at, for goodness sake. After all, we’re not barbarians, are we? You can leave them clustered together or break them apart for separate drinks. They, of course, can be rearranged like a puzzle for a trivet type of arrangement.

After moving out to the Northwest it didn’t take long to notice that people take their coffee pretty seriously out here, and I’m not talking about Starbucks or Seattle’s Best. A welcoming local cafe is always a stone’s throw away, catering to both the casual coffee drinker and as well as patrons of the most distinguised taste. In Portland, one of the most unique cafes I have come across is Coava in the Central Eastside district. Sharing a space with a bamboo plywood showroom, the interior is industrial chic (fancy enjoying your coffee at a tablesaw?) yet is warmed by a large, welcoming bamboo counter and of course the lingering aroma of coffee beans. Serving coffee via a Chemex pour-over brewer is their first choice for a rich tasting cup, however co-owner Keith Gehrke saw the single-use paper filters to be quite wasteful. For those of us that are a bit clumsy (or lazy), this tray would be a dream. Filled glasses and dishes keep their place even if you swing the tray, allowing you to move from kitchen to dining table to outdoors in a breeze. The loop at the top of the straps means you can carry even more in one hand if necessary.

Nylon handles are removable from the aluminum tray.

This coffee scoop also functions as a bag sealer, which means less ‘stuff’ required to make your morning drink and maybe even a few seconds saved in the process. Designed by Teemu Karhunen, the Kupu is made in Finland with birch plywood.

I’m such a sucker for reclaimed wood. These serving trays by Union Wood Co. are built from old growth fir boards from a recently renovated RCMP Livery stable in Vancouver. Each tray is unique (though they all have brass handles and rubber feet on the bottom).

Normally soft, subdued colors draw my eye, and I would guess most of us play it pretty safe when it comes to color in our homes. Maybe it’s the perpetual grey weather of January that has me itching for crazy-in-your-face color… you know, the kind that makes your eyes water and brings delight and sometimes even a ‘for goodness sakes!’ response. Now, this tablecloth might not tick all those boxes, but it is ‘fun’, with its big top imagery, even if it is a little bit juvenile. It’s appealing with its bright red and white and tassels (tassels, for goodness sakes!). Just the thing for this time of year.
