Simplicitas & Wolf Udo Wagner’s Picnic Set

Hopefully you’ll be enjoying your Labor Day* outside in the sunshine, maybe with some of the usual refreshments, and, if so, perhaps you’ll consider how this picnic set would be ever so much nicer to use than ordinary throw away plates.

Save the planet from one more throway picnic plate! Part of the Urbana series of thoughtfully designed to-go products by Simplicitas in Stockholm, this uber-compact, five-setting picnic set by Wolf Udo Wagner is made of durable, dishwasher-safe ABS. Yet it’s lightweight and ready to move. Each sectioned plate features a cup for hot or cold bevies and an all-purpose flatware triangle–fork, knife and spoon all in one. When not in use, the plates stack and cover the cups and cutlery, which stays locked in place by the screw.

Fresh Traveller

Now you can transport your breakfast cereal (or other fruits or foods) separately from your milk (or drink) and mix them whenever you want. I’d say it’d be perfect for milk and cookies, but I guess it’s not often that you want to take those with you…or maybe it is, what do I know.

There’s been a previous post about Stig Lindberg Pillows, but table linens are another lovely way to inject some Scandinavian design into your home.

This colorful collection includes some of the most popular Swedish fabric designs of the 1950′s. This runner by Design House Stockholm is in the fantastic graphic prints “Lustgården” or “Pottery” by Stig Lindberg.

Nambé Twist 10-Inch Cocktail Shaker

Talk about a some serious cocktails, this spiral shaker has some sharp curves (and point) to make handling easier. It looks slightly scary, but I’m sure it does the job extremely well.

The twisted, sculpted sides of the shaker increase the ease of handling the shaker when moist, and beautifully flow into the pointed, cone-shaped top. Made of sand-cast metal and polished to a bright mirror finish, the shaker retains cold remarkably well and can be thoroughly chilled in a freezer before filling with martini ingredients. A thin black rubber ring is integral in the lid and in the removable strainer, to make the press fit nice and snug. With a 16-ounce capacity and height of 10 inches, the shaker comes gift-boxed and ready to impress a favorite cocktail maker.

Irezumi Ink Dish Tattoo Design

Whether you’re a fan of tattoos or not, this ink-inspired dinnerware is lovely interpretation of traditional porcelain table settings. I’d like to think that this would satisfy the ‘matchy-matchy’ crowd (i.e. people who like to have everything match) but still give a little bit of edgy/alternative style to the table.

Paul Timman is one of the leading tattoo artists in the world and recognized as a specialist in tribal and traditional Japanese designs. Here he inks is world renowned designs on porcelain inspired by classical Japanese tattoos.

Luisa Cevese creates one of a kind placemats using textile scraps and recycled industrial waste. That’s the good news. The bad news is you have to order 6, at $65 each (which is close to $400 for those of you who are a bit slower with multiplication/math).

Spherical Ice Tray Set

Time for an updated post; back in ’07 this was a little bit less and had a not-as-great photo. Now, it’s $16 for the tray that molds two ‘eye-catching’ ice spheres.

This unique ice tray molds two 2″-diameter ice spheres, eye-catching alternatives to traditional ice cubes. Made of plastic. Set of two (one shown).

Alt Mugs

These are a little late in being featured, but better late than never, right? It seems like one of these would be a perfect small gift for a co-worker/friend.

Each of these mugs has been subtly altered to give them added and unusual functionality, not limiting what you can put in a mug to tea or coffee. what about milk? or money? or golf balls?! Our Alt Mugs cleverly and subtley change the function of the humble mug to give it a new twist, a new lease of life – people have been drinking out of mugs for millions of years, it’s time for a muggy revolution! Range of 4 mugs to collect, each with a different use; ashtray, money box, milk jug, or golf practice mug.

Zucch Sugar Pourer

This might quickly become a favorite amongst you add-sugar-to-coffee types…I’d say it’s much more dignified (and possibly less wasteful) than those tiny paper packets every day.

Made of double-walled glass, this stylish sugar dispenser has a wide hole in the top for pouring and a hole with a rubber stopper in the bottom for refilling. Made by Alessi. Hand-wash only. Sugar not included.

Designed by Lisa Vincitorio, 2008.

Slanted Mug

With my luck, I’d spill this on the way to the chair/sofa, or while pouring the beverage.

We’ve all done it! Precariously placed a glass or mug containing our favorite beverage on our lap, only to have it spill on our clothes, not to mention our favourite chair. This mug’s uniquely shaped base allows you to nest it easily and securely in your lap. Available in orange, cream, light blue and mint green.

Petit Dejeuner Breakfast Tray

Now, this is what I’m talking about, a simple improvement to a standard product makes it exceptional. Why have an ordinary breakfast tray when you can have this one with a built-in vase? (Note: breakfast in bed is a luxury with or without flowers, just want to make that absolutely clear. Also, if your answer to the previous question was ‘because it costs $100′…fair enough, fair enough.)

Spork – The Perfect Outdoor Eating Utensil

The ubiquitous spork strikes again. It might be slightly uncouth, but it’s certainly handy to have in certain situations.

Super lightweight and extremely durable, they’re ideal for back packing, picnicking, lunchbox, briefcase or boat. Made of a heat-resistant (won’t melt in boiling water) polycarbonate material, they are machine washable and friendly to non-stick cooking surfaces.

Comes in Small and Medium for eating, and Large for cooking, stirring and serving.
Small: 6.5″ L x 1.5″ W, $5.95
Medium: 7.75″ L x 2″ W, $7.95
