Domestic Construction Rugs

Remember the Mousepad Rugs? Those digitally dyed nylon and rubber rugs that are machine washable and skid-resistant? Well, here they are again, except now there’s a few more to choose from through Decurate (a weekly mag featuring design sales, if you’re not familiar) or directly from Domestic Construction. My favorites shown below.

Fleche Rug

If you choose any of the Fleche rugs for your home, you are allowed to be socially boring*. The rugs are Samare Studio’s update to the Pays d’en Haut Legacy collection, and utilize traditional felting techniques to create the imagery of flames and bolts of lightning (as evoked by the Quebec native ‘fléchée’ motif). Four different palettes are available.

Pebble Rug

Upon closer inspection of this rug you might find yourself thinking of teddy bears, and the uncomfortable thought of ‘how many teddy bears had to die to make this thing?’ Not to fear, though, as the rug was made from the extra material left over from plush animal production. This up-cycling means you can now lie down on a carpet of cuddly teddy bear arms; it would be a nice refuge after a cruddy day, wouldn’t it? More colors available.

Almond Rug by DwellStudio

Whoa, if you’re a sucker for black and white patterns, check out these flat woven rugs from DwellStudio. The runner is a winner, for sure, with its simple almond shapes taking the full width of pattern. Flat woven rugs are often the best choice for high traffic areas as they don’t show wear as much as a higher pile rug. They’re often much easier to clean as well.

Luna Rug

This rug needs Also sprach Zarathustra, Op.30 to accompany each new viewing. It’s a moon rug, so therefore I’m obligated to wax poetic nonsense regardless of whether you or I can afford it (if I could afford it, I would pretend I was an astronaut every single day). Interestingly enough, it’s actually a re-edition from the ’80s that comes from Oscar Tusquets’ La Tierra and La Luna rugs. Photographic techniques have improved since then, obviously, allowing the moon in its waxing phase to have more definition as well as having browns and beiges to give a warmer appearance.

Avenue Rug

Stripes! There’s nothing like ‘em to add some excitement to a room. Designed by Ritva Puotila, this wide striped design is available in four color combinations and also (good news) treated to repel dirt. It’s made from paper yarn, but don’t worry about flammability as the weave is tight enough to “not ignite easily”. Feel better? Available in stone-yellow, light gray-gray purple, gray-light gray, and nutria-light gray.

Last Newspaper Rug

Nice. Old newspapers are cotton-wrapped to form this textured rug from Blu Dot. I haven’t seen these in person, but it looks like the closer you are to the rug the more you see the newspaper… a nice detail in a room, I think. The price is pretty affordable for the size too. Available in three sizes (4′x6′, 6′x9′, and 9′x9′) and three colors (grey, purple and slate).

Brita Sweden Gunnel Rug

If you’re a sucker for patterns, you might like this rug with its zig-zaggy-ness. However, the standout quality for me it that it’s woven plastic. I have a somewhat similar rug in my kitchen and it’s been perfect, as I’ve had no worries when it comes to spillage or stains… you simply rinse it out. Sure, it’s plastic, and that sounds a bit unfriendly and cold, but I’ve been surprised at how I notice the pattern (and the interest it brings) and padding for my feet more than the material. It’s a low maintenance choice for high traffic areas, or even outdoors, if you wish. Gunnel Runner Rug shown above, Anna rug below.

Mousepad Rug

Yep, it’s just what you think it is- a mousepad for your floor. Digitally dyed in pleasing patterns, these nylon and rubber rugs are easy to clean (machine washable!) and skid-resistant. Unfortunately, they’re available in only two sizes: 23″x36″ or 46″x66″.

Pad Rug Ivory by Marie Mees

Black and white patterned rugs have always seemed like the ideal choice for a room, mostly because they act as a neutral backdrop and you can easily change colors around. While this rug is leaning more towards an investment piece price, I do like the repetitive pattern, and, as it’s hand knotted New Zealand wool, you know the quality won’t disappoint.

Losanges Rug

Pair Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec with the Nani Marquina rug team and what’s the result? Awesomeness, of course. The Losanges is a reinterpretation of the traditional Persian rug using the kilim technique. Kilim rugs are pretty flat, as you might know, because the strands are tightly interwoven and there’s no pile (cushiness). 13 colors are combined through a geometrical rhombus shape, all handwoven by Northern Pakistan craftsmen. Now, maybe if you’re very talented, you can confidently say that you could weave something as impressive as this with your hands, but I sure as you-know-what can’t, so I understand the higher price point. Technically complex, indeed.

Code Rug

I don’t like featuring too many sale items all within a few days, but there are some finds that just have to be shared. So, bear with me… This Code Rug is only $50-$100 off its regular price, but, considering it’s 100% tufted wool and you can get an 8×10 for $499.00, it’s a steal. My living room rug (Mikado) is in need of a changeout badly (note: a cream/off-white rug is not smart when one has pets), and the price on this rug beats the pants off the other $1300 rugs I was considering.

5′x8′ Rug: $299.00 $249.00

Recycled Army Canvas Rug

Well, if tents and track tarps are going to be recycled, why not into a rug? I like how each one will be slightly different, and the colors vary from natural to worn greens. This could work anywhere from an office to kid’s room (in my opinion).

Materials: canvas
52″ dia.

Casbah Rug

How much do you want to spend on an outdoor area rug? Let me guess: not a whole lot, as it’s going to be outside. This recycled polypropelene rug ticks the right boxes as it’s $80, 5′x8′, and has a very colorful pattern to jazz up your patio or porch area. It can go inside as well, maybe for a kitchen or dining area.
