This light uses it’s surroundings to dictate what color it will glow.

Believe it or not, this intriguing little device has the amazing, chameleon-like ability to change colors according to its environment. The way it works is sort of like a one-pixel camera; turn it on and three LED lights (in red, blue and green) detect the strength of reflected light, then matches and stores the external color source. For multi-colored surfaces, the average color is reflected. Sure, it does make a perfect tool for decorators and designers… but for something as cool as this, do you really even need to find a practical use?

Corona Chandelier

I like how this looks kind of upside down and how the historic bulbs play off the otherwise modern styling.

Lighting distilled to its essence. Created by acclaimed designer Rico Espinet, this industrial-chic chandelier pairs a thick band of bronze-finished metal with 12 exposed bulbs. A dramatic centerpiece for the dining room or entry, it’s suspended from three fixed rods attached to an adjustable center rod. Uses twelve 40W max. type A historic bulbs (included). UL-approved. Professional installation recommended. 24″ diam.; height adjusts from 46″ to 82″.

Bague Table Lamp by Patricia Urquiola & Eliana Gerotto

Patricia Urquiola is a master at taking any material and making it look soft and delicate.

The inspiration for the Bague table lamp was drawn from the shape of a ring. It was first presented with material never before used to make a lamp. The result was a stretched metal mesh painted white or light grey, whose surface was covered in transparent silicone resin, to diffuse a soft filtered light. A thick plexiglass ‘stopper’ was used to cut glare and increase the propagation of light upwards.

Ninety Task Light

Sure, not everyone’s going to plunk down $500 for a lamp, but it is an excellent, excellent design. If you have it for the next thirty years, you could say it’s worth the $1.38 per month that it averages out to be, but then, I guess you could use that formula to justify buying anything expensive.

This is a quick and easy way to dress up a bare lightbulb…

The Bulbcap is a lampshade, slightly more than a lightbulb. The caps are directly pulled over the lightbulbs of up to 40 watts. Any wattage can work when using economical lightbulbs. The Bulbcaps can be fixed on hanging bulbs from the ceiling, or on standing lamps of any kind. Mix and match various colors to create a collage of lights!

Maplemap Hanging Lamp

This is such a lovely light…

The lamp, designed by Ani+Lumigrane, was debuted at IDS08 and was an instant success. Co-created by Frederic Guibrunet, a paper-maker with a decade of practice, and Parisian Didier Boursin, an expert in origami. Their talents combined into a paper explosion of maple leaves that looks gorgeous on and off.
